YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT

~KES said Sep 26, 2008, 12:13 PM:

More and more people are living by the idea that you are what you eat. And because of this they are changing to specific dietary choices. Some people follow a vegan regimen - a diet that contains no animal or animal byproducts including meat, fish dairy, eggs and honey. Others optimize their health by eliminating gluten from their diets - a protein typically found in wheat, oats, barley, rye, spelt and kamut.  I would love some raw recipes and choices of what to buy, labels to avoid–some basics on RAW would be a good 101 for us to gain awareness on starting out.

Thanks,
Kathy

Hey Kathy!

Well, the first thing i would say with regards to adopting more of a living foods lifestyle is to arm yourself with knowledge, may i suggest the following books:

The Sunfood Diet Success System by David Wolfe, i've read it again and again, it's very profound and highly educational, an amazing read. Conscious Eating, The Rainbow Green Live Food Cuisine and Spiritual Nutrition all by Gabriel Cousens are must haves too.

Alternatively check out the following sites;

Give it to me Raw
Fresh Network
Sunfoods

I'll be posting recipes too from time to time.

Bliss!

This is exactly what I needed to be guided to.  Thanks for all the sites and books to get.  I had heard of David Wolfe but never watched him in action.  He brings such logic to the area on his sunfood site.  I am making a new shopping list for the week from going over these.

I like the WHfoods site for understanding the meaning of all the new words in nutrition and just wanted to add it to the library here.

I would like to include Jessica's recommendations here that I find very helpful:
Oh yes, check out Vegan Outreach. I know the fellow who runs that site. There are so many good resources online for this stuff.

And, if you're ever looking for great recipes, this is my favorite site.

Thanks for all of these.
Kathy

I am new to Gaia and happy to find this pod.  Thanks for all of the links.  This is so important to let others know about being vegan or vegetarian organic foods.  Thanks… Lee

Cross post from Realizing Health that I wanted to share here:

Weight and health are seventy to eighty percent about diet, not activity. Fixate less on your 'abs' or 'fat burning' or spending more time at the gym, and focus on what you're feeding your body with - if for no other reason than so it will stop rebelling.

Nutritionally, a  high-fiber, low-fat, plant-based diet is best for weight loss and overall health. The advice offered here by the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine is an excellent start:

http://www.pcrm.org/health/prevmed/weightloss.html

There are dozens of meal and snack suggestions, including what to substitute for some of your usual food habits.

What people find when they adhere to a plant-based diet is there are virtually no limits on the amount of food they can eat, and the days of counting calories or points or carbs or whatever are over.

I found the website educational for loosing some extra stuff.
