I think it is so important for people to learn about being vegetarian and know the facts. I truly believe that a trend towards a vegetarian/ plant-based diet is the best thing we can do for the Planet; and, the statistics and research support that.

I recently attended a lecture about vegetarianism by the owner of Zen Palate and Zen Burger, two vegetarian restaurant chains in New York City. He said that 50% of the water supply is used for farm animals and 80% of agricultural land. And, animal agriculture causes an estimated 18% of greenhouse gas, which is 40% more than all transport combined. So, a vegetarian diet would help the earth a lot more than even hybrid cars. Here's a blog I wrote a while back with some more links and resources.

Also, he said that a cow gets approximately 1000 shots in its lifetime before it is slaughtered, and we consume the stuff it was injected with.

Welcome to Gaia and a veggie-life! I'm glad you found good info here. Also, congratulations to you. That is very exciting. A world of deliciousness awaits you :)

I found becoming vegetarian inspired me to expand my diet and try new things. I discovered many wonderful foods I'd never tried on the standard American diet. And I felt so good because I knew I was living in more alignment with my values.

Hello,  My name is Mary, aka Mother Mary here on Gaia. I give more of an intro in the discussion “how long?”  A little fyi~i share about being vegetarian on my profile at the bottom.  I look forward to connecting with other like-minded folks.

Now that it is Thanksgiving week & turkeys are being consumed my the multi-millions, I shudder at the thought, but am so thankful that there are so many more of us vegetarians & vegans!

I have little tradition here at ZNG I am continuing. Please see the poster below that was made by Native Americans for this take on and feeling about the holiday. Thing is, I really like Thanksgiving because of the spirit of unity behind it, yet I abhor the lies perpetuated about our true history. Feel free to copy and paste this anywhere!

I was a vegetarian on and off for years (about 10 years) !! … and the weird thing is when i ate animal products for one i didn't really enjoy it and secondly i was always left with indescribable guilt … so than, more recently i decided to go vegan … and now i eat in peace. nothing has ever been so easy and i've never felt so good!! :)

hopefully i'll get to know some of you better!

I am a new member & a lacto-ova vegetarian for the second time in my life (this time forever - I am 56).  Has anyone read Serving Humanity by The Tibetan Dwjal Khul?  He states that per Atlantean lore, one must be a vegetarian at least 10 years in order to read the Akashic Record without error.

Hi SherryJ ~  I hadn't heard of Serving Humanity but would suggest that you place this in Books and on your home page on interests.  Once you do that you can push the link on your page & find others that have read it.  You can put a review on it there as well. 

I found a website http://masterdk.com/ and found the Atlantean lore site. I found Akashic Records & chose that site. I recommend finding words in onelook giving an array of dictionaries but do understand that to gain the clarity from that book the awareness is probably different after 10 years. I don't have that sort of discipline myself, but respect those that do.
