Blasphemy in Ireland

davybuoy said Jul 7, 5:20 AM:

Currently a new law is being rushed through the Irish parliament to create the crime of blasphemy as this is required by the constitution of the country. Given the low regard Irish politicians are currently held in they have decided to do anything to try to get votes and gone down this backward route rather than the more sensible one of holding a referendum to remove the requirement from the constitution.

An atheist group are going to print statements blaspheming all the major religions when this new law comes into effect, but being the busy man I am I would rather get them all in a single statement when I hand myself in to the Garda (Irish police). I was thinking along the lines of;

“the concept of god is a man made construct”

as I don't want the ensuing court case to be spun as an attack on a specific religion, rather to highlight the idiocy of the law. I suppose I could always fall back on the old favorite;

“blasphemy is a victimless crime”

But that might be too subtle. Does anyone have some advice for making these kind of protests.

That is a regressive step, ain't it?

You might offer a quote by Krishnamurti:  “God is violence.”

Not only is it going to happen (the alternative is to hold a referendum on removing the requirement from the constitution) they are using some method to push the bill through without discussion in the dail (Irish parliament). Not that my representatives seem bothered I have only received rote replies from their assistants in answer to my emails, this despite the fact that I vote and all my nonpracticing catholic (solely by birth) in-laws don't.
