Down memory lane

Eli said Apr 1, 3:40 AM:

How many of the following experiences do you remember?

Newsreels before the movie
Candy cigarettes.
Pant leg clips for bicycles without chain guards.
Head light dimmer switches on the floor.
Ignition switches on the dashboard.
Heaters mounted on the inside of the fire wall.
Real ice boxes, and ice that was delivered.
Soldering irons you heated on a gas burner.
Ice skates having blades with hollow tubes in them.
Using hand signals in a car without turn signals.
Home milk delivery in glass bottles with cardboard lids
TV test patterns that came on at night after the last show and were there until TV shows started again in the morning
Metal ice trays with lever
Blue flashbulb

Of course you were referring to cars WITHOUT electronic turn signals, but I often find myself hand signaling just for fun nowadays!

Here in New Mexico people might pay more attention to that than the electronic ones on the car! lol No one knows how to use those correctly anymore here.
All that other stuff sounds dreamy what else?
I remember mud pies
making tents out of the chairs in the living room

Ahhhh the milkman! We used to have a metal box on the front porch and every morning during the school year I knew that when I heard the lid slam(our milkman always slammed it) it was time to get up.
During the summer, the slamming lid ment getting up to whatever I was doing that day after chores-usually joining the neighborhood boys for a bike ride or a pick up baseball game or just roaming the woods with my brother and sister.
or going for a swim—
Later in the afternoon, I could settle under a tree with my favorite book(always something by James Fenimore Cooper or a Nancy Drew) or I could just lie back and gaze up at the clouds going by.
On Saturday nights there were back yard picnics with all the cousins running around while the grown-ups sat in the shade or cooked hotdogs and burgers.
Then supper–and someone always got sick on too many dogs or corn on the cob.
After supper, you chased lighting bugs or just watched the stars come out.
…and then, you woke up in your bed to the sound of the milkman slamming the lid.

Oh my Nicole, boy do I remember:

Candy cigarettes :  my sister and I would beg our mother and father to get these.
Head light dimmer switches on the floor-I remember asking my father what that button on the floor was.
Ignition switches on the dashboard-our old rambler had one of these.

Home milk delivery in glass bottles with cardboard lids- We had a silver milk box and mom always reminded us that we had to leave the empty bottles in it for the milkman.  I always wondered if that thing actually kept the milk cool?
TV test patterns that came on at night after the last show and were there until TV shows started again in the morning-yes i do and they were annoying
Metal ice trays with lever-Had many of these
Blue flashbulb-on my dad's old camera.  Wow! too many things to remember and yet awesome memories.

Deep down inside, I wish we could go back to those days.  Simple and more meaningful.  Children had respect for their elders and definately no rap music.  LOL.

Most of these things I remember.  What I found kind of annoying about the introduction's of a movie, was when 'God Save The Queen' was being played before every movie, and what I enjoyed most about the movies were the “Pink Panther” cartoons that made every roar with laughter, and the freedom that people felt when they would get up and start dancing in the isles of the theater when an Elvis movie came to town….good ol' “Rock and Roll, not to mention the guys that had their hair all slicked back with 'lots' of “Brill-Cream”….”a little dab'l do ya”:)

I can't really comment on the ice skates, or the head light dimmer switches on the floor, but I'm sure they must hold some very interesting stories.

You bring back some wonderful memories from this post, Eli, and it puts a warm glow of a smile to my face.

Thank you for sharing such an awesome time of history.
:-))

That's wonderful! I can't say I ever recall people feeling free to start dancing in the aisles of the theatre. I would love to have seen that!

I hate to say it, but I don't have a whole lot of use for 'rap” either.
I have yet to hear anything positive or hopeful coming from that “art” form.
All it sounds like to me it “blehblehbleaM–f— blehbleh” I belive that music should comfort, encoruage and inspire.

I'm not a rap fan either, Liz. But I think I can understand at least some of its appeal.

Besides country :) I'm open to most other forms of music.

Variety is life!

as a not-fan of most rap, I will say that some rap does comfort, encourage, and inspire… the Christian rap I've heard does, anyways (the link is slightly different then the version I'm used to).

Unfortunately, I'm growing up too late to experience the idealized past… except in movies and my drivers ed book.

  Nicole : wakingdreamer

Re: Down memory lane

Nicole said May 12, 7:00 AM:

Hamilton, thanks for that. I'm always intrigued by forms of Christian music like punk, heavy metal and other types of music that are usually very much not to do with faith and inspiration.

I think you'll make your own idealised past, it seems to be part of what we do as humans…

Peace,

Nicole

I am more into Celtic–I have some friends in Chicago who have a christain celtic band called 'The Crossing”.
They are connected with Jesus People USA www.jpusa.org
I went to this church for 14 years and I have to say that these guys really walk the walk.

Has anyone here besides me attended Cornerstone Fest in Bushnell Il.?
I used to go every year. It was a chance to get my kid out of Chicago and I got to go for free because I was working.
It's a beautiful time. Another thing I miss. It's like an old time camp meeting with everything from Celtic to punk Christain music–camping out, speakers and fireworks(it usually happens over 4th of July weekend). I just miss being together with my “family”. Jpusa was like my family.
