Help Find A Better Word

Sean said Sep 4, 2006, 6:44 AM:

New thread here..and perhaps less intense too. What is the better word for ” tribalism” today? Words are tricky things and the unconscious implication and varied definitions of words have a profound effect on our willingness to accept them or work with them.

Here are a few to start some thinking:

NeoTribalism: Still using the dreaded ” T” word but with the prefix perhaps it offers an evolved understanding. Not throwing out the old word–making it a new one.

Biocentric: Life centered. Mimicary of nature which has it’s distinct species boundaries but inherantly works together as a whole system.

Maybe we can work with other species community names and make it our own to avoid prejudice.. A Flock ( of birds) A Pod ( of whales) A Pack ( of wolves) A Herd (of elephants) A Hive ( of bees)….

Great idea, Sean! I’d be in favor of a term that shows how humanity is interconnected with other species as opposed to standing at the apex of a pyramid.

Seeing how touchy some societies are about using loan words, perhaps an entirely new term could be coined. Years back Standard Oil decided to consolidate its various brand names under one umbrella title, sometimes for strategic reasons. For instance, its operation in Italy was called Nova, but in Italian, “nova” means “it doesn’t move or go.” Similarly, its Japanese division, Enco, meant “lemon.” So the company came up with the neologism Exxon, which did not appear in any language on Earth and thus was born with neither positive nor negative associations attached to it. The fact that for many it now stands for oil-soaked malfeasance is the fault of its corporate executives, not the name itself. Our moniker, if we’re worthy of it, would presumably meet with a far happier fate.

Yes, I think that's a good idea Burt–come up with something out of nothing and attach the meaning we want to it!

Now..how do we do a brainstorm on this?

Yeah…I like this idea too Burt…So let’s go:

How do we begin this….? I suppose we can try to merge some words to create a new new word or perhaps we find a word from a old language. Zaadz “created” a word from a word that is not popularly known–it has a nice flow to it with consonents that are fun to work with..The Zzzzzzz’s….

If we just make up a nonsensical word it will lack the depth and meaning we hope to attribute to it so I feel that we need to either make a word out of words with meaning…like for instance Biobalism ( Bio and triBALISM) or the like… or perhaps we play with the letters….like Tribal Ecological Community Of Life or: Tecol

Lots to think on here…and I thought this would be less intense. I offer this post to help fire the creative ideas…..I gotta think more on this one I guess.

Hmmmmmm…

Another try here at rousing the troops…any interest here in brainstorming a new word for Tribalism Today ?

“Stream of consciousness stuff” is okay too….just throw it out there for consideration…

You’re right about Zaadz, Sean. It’s a fun word for most of us.

I guess part of my reluctance about “tribalism” stems from my study of Ken Wilber and the Spiral Dynamics crowd. If you’re familiar with them, you may remember that they’ve color-coded stages of consciousness development, starting with beige and passig through purple, red, orange, green, yellow, turquoise and going up to teal, I believe. Tribalism is linked with a fairly low level (red), and even though this would be NEW tribalism, I still feel a need to transcend the term.

Hey! Stream of consciousness, right? “Transcendants” or Trannies, for short. Or “The Walkers,” from Quinn’s injunction to just walk away from civilization as it now exists. CollectiveX.

OK, you guys take a shot…

I like the Trannies…

Another term….Carolyn Myss used this when she talked about the end of 'homo sapiens'..and suggesting a new 'branch' of the human journey would be Homo noeticus….with 'noetic' being a person who is open to all dimensions and the interconnected ness…

So, maybe Noetics….

“Trannie” is slang for trans-sexual… you might not want to go there.

“Walker” I rather like.  Sounds better than “drop-out”.

“Noetic” may be too broad… noetics may be open to non-tribal forms of organization.

Man, I’ve really got my finger on the pulse of popular culture, don’t I? Thanks for the head’s-up, Booner.

I am fond of Walkers because it could also have the connotation of walking gently on the earth or leaving a minimum impact. Plus the memetic history of the idea harkens back to the transcendentalists and the 19th century naturalists.

Namaste

Sean,

It looks like Neo-Tribalism is already the phrase in usage!  Look, it's even on Wikipedia!

Well, there it is ! Nothing too novel with that word choice then….we kinda got stuck on the “new word thing”…we ended up liking the simplistic term of “Walkaway” but that isn’t quite right either…I am not an advocate for labels but a new word would help define the intention better for mainstream use.

So many words–so few minutes to consider them all ! :)
