Autumn
~ Abhinabha ~

O season of ripe beauty, you I greet!
Whose heart is love's calm wisdom at its throbbing core;
Your deep hues and myriad colors make the soul's wings beat
And lift a lover like me to your ambrosial shore.

Through you Nature weeps its precious golden tears,
In you a mortal eye could glimpse its native Immortality,
O endless fount of inspiration to the poet-seers
To be bound by your embrace is to be truly free!

A glad earth bathes in your benign and lustrous smile
And man's heart thrills with an unknown rapture and delight
By your whispers and footfalls and flute-call beguiled,
An ancient kinship links him to your celestial height.

A brimming of golden sweetness in your dreaming eyes
Fills the world with the beauty of a realm divine,
The sun's last rays serenely trickle from your purple skies:
I send my love and song and call your blessings mine.

Said a blade of grass to an autumn leaf, “You make such a noise falling! You scatter all my winter dreams.”
Said the leaf indignant, “Low-born and low-dwelling! Songless, peevish thing! You live not in the upper air and you cannot tell the sound of singing.”
Then the autumn leaf lay down upon the earth and slept. And when spring came she waked again – and she was a blade of grass.
And when it was autumn and her winter sleep was upon her, and above her through all the air the leaves were falling, she muttered to herself, “O these autumn leaves! They make such a noise! They scatter all my winter dreams.”

My Autumn Dance

  ~Nicola ~

If I were a leaf,
I would spend all day
Dreaming of that exquisite moment,
When I do my sweet Autumn Dance.

I have been rehearsing in my mind
Ever since Spring.
Practising my twirls and pirhouettes,
As I frolic across the sky.
Dancing through the air,
Against the backdrop of a clear, blue fall sky.

I await the right moment.
My colours are intensified to perfection.
Brilliant oranges, scarlets and rich golds.
I flutter in the gentle breeze.
The moment is almost here.

With great excitement, I let go of home base.
I surrender to the elements with great relish.
The wind tosses me up into the air.
It floats me here and floats me there.
I spiral and I twist,
Spiralling down to almost touch the ground.

Another puff of wind and I am up again
To dance with delight and ecstasy.
Swirling through the air.
Wheeee….. I am free!

All of my life, I have envisioned this moment.
The anticipation, the excitement, the release,
The sheer pleasure of desire realised.

My moment is now.
Each moment before has paved the way
For my platform of now.

I revel in the experience with great appreciation.
I relish the celebration of this, my Autumn Dance.

October
~ William Cullen Bryant ~

AY, thou art welcome, heaven's delicious breath! When woods begin to wear the crimson leaf,
And suns grow meek, and the meek suns grow brief
And the year smiles as it draws near its death. Wind of the sunny south! oh, still delay
In the gay woods and in the golden air,
Like to a good old age released from care,
Journeying, in long serenity, away.
In such a bright, late quiet, would that I
Might wear out life like thee, 'mid bowers and brooks
And dearer yet, the sunshine of kind looks,
And music of kind voices ever nigh;
And when my last sand twinkled in the glass,
Pass silently from men, as thou dost pass.

On Fields O'er Which the Reaper's Hand has Passed

~ Henry David Thoreau ~

On fields o'er which the reaper's hand has pass'd
Lit by the harvest moon and autumn sun,
My thoughts like stubble floating in the wind
And of such fineness as October airs,
There after harvest could I glean my life
A richer harvest reaping without toil,
And weaving gorgeous fancies at my will
In subtler webs than finest summer haze.

Colorado Autumn

 ~ Happiness ~

My horse snorts his way up the steep trail,

uncertain in this first snow of the year.

The silence is vast. Summer sleeps now,

banished from meadows, valleys, woods.

The pines are like a memory of pines.

The stream over there has disappeared

in this strange new dreaming.

Ice throws rainbows into the luminous air.

A sudden breeze shakes down a shower

of aspen leaves, and coins of pale gold

fall around us like an unexpected gift of Grace.

Autumn
~ Kalidasa ~

The autumn comes, a maiden fair
In slenderness and grace,
With nodding rice-stems in her hair
And lilies in her face.
In flowers of grasses she is clad;
And as she moves along,
Birds greet her with their cooing glad
Like bracelets' tinkling song.

A diadem adorns the night
Of multitudinous stars;
Her silken robe is white moonlight,
Set free from cloudy bars;
And on her face (the radiant moon)
Bewitching smiles are shown:
She seems a slender maid, who soon
Will be a woman grown.

Over the rice-fields, laden plants
Are shivering to the breeze;
While in his brisk caresses dance
The blossomed-burdened trees;
He ruffles every lily-pond
Where blossoms kiss and part,
And stirs with lover's fancies fond
The young man's eager heart.

Fall Song
~ Mary Oliver ~

Another year gone, leaving everywhere
its rich spiced residues: vines, leaves,

the uneaten fruits crumbling damply
in the shadows, unmattering back

from the particular island
of this summer, this NOW, that now is nowhere

except underfoot, moldering
in that black subterranean castle

of unobservable mysteries - - -roots and sealed seeds
and the wanderings of water. This

I try to remember when time's measure
painfully chafes, for instance when autumn

flares out at the last, boisterous and like us longing
to stay - - - how everything lives, shifting

from one bright vision to another, forever
in these momentary pastures.

Adrift on the Lake
~ Wang Wei ~

Autumn sky illuminates itself all empty
distances away toward far human realms,

cranes off horizons of sand tracing its
clarity into mountains beyond clouds.

Crystalline waters quiet settling night.
Moonlight leaving idleness everywhere

ablaze, I trust myself to this lone paddle,
this calm on and on, no return in sight.

thanks for the inspiration!  I've tried to attach this tree pic I made last week.  And i guess i'll try a quick poem too…

the stubborn leaf

looking at abyss below
the little leaf tried not to show
pretended he did not quite know
hoped that he might never go

he watched the others go away
but he held on until one day
he overheard the sparrow say

the leaves would all be back in may

he burst with colour in delight
and leapt out using all his might.

then at the end of the dark night
he reached again new green and bright

Thank you so much for the inspiring poems and photos. What a coincidence? I saw some of those photos last night in http://www.webshots.com/ and put them in my favorites page. I love the colors and emotions of this season, our new apartment has autumn colors in the living, dining and kitchen.  I always remember  Vancouver and Victoria in BC Canada where I last visited in September 1980 with my Mom (now 82 and living in Seattle).  That was when I truly imbibed the spirit of this special season.  I feel I must go back to BC maybe this Christmas when I visit my Mom.

Here's a poem to add to the collections:

Gathering Leaves

by Robert Frost

Spades take up leaves
No better than spoons,
And bags full of leaves
Are light as balloons. I make a great noise
Of rustling all day
Like rabbit and deer
Running away. But the mountains I raise
Elude my embrace,
Flowing over my arms
And into my face. I may load and unload
Again and again
Till I fill the whole shed,
And what have I then? Next to nothing for weight,
And since they grew duller
From contact with earth,
Next to nothing for color. Next to nothing for use.
But a crop is a crop,
And who's to say where
The harvest shall stop?

Nature XXVII, Autumn

by Emily Dickinson

The morns are meeker than they were,
The nuts are getting brown;
The berry's cheek is plumper,
The rose is out of town. The maple wears a gayer scarf,
The field a scarlet gown.
Lest I should be old-fashioned,
I'll put a trinket on.

Leaves

by Elsie Brady

How silently they tumble down
And come to rest upon the ground
To lay a carpet, rich and rare,
Beneath the trees without a care,
Content to sleep, their work well done,
Colors gleaming in the sun. At other times, they wildly fly
Until they nearly reach the sky.
Twisting, turning through the air
Till all the trees stand stark and bare.
Exhausted, drop to earth below
To wait, like children, for the snow.

Warmly,

Armila

Ah! Darina!

This bounty of autumn glory is almost too much to stand! The words are exquisite and the pictures! I've never seen such a collection, they almost make the heart break with color. As I scrolled down, I couldn't help but think of this poem by Edna St. Vincent Millay:

GOD’S WORLD

O world, I cannot hold thee close enough!
Thy winds, thy wide grey skies!
Thy mists that roll and rise!
Thy woods, this autumn day, that ache and sag
And all but cry with colour! That gaunt crag
To crush! To lift the lean of that black bluff!
World, World, I cannot get thee close enough!

Long have I known a glory in it all,
      But never knew I this;
      Here such a passion is
As stretcheth me apart. Lord, I do fear
Thou'st made the world too beautiful this year.
My soul is all but out of me,—let fall
No burning leaf; prithee, let no bird call.

(Edna St. Vincent Millay)

When I scrolled past the enchanted aspen leaves and saw my own Goddess I almost stopped breathing! What an incredible honor to have the work of my hands appear with this collection. Thank you. Thank you for all of it. My soul is all but out of me -

The thing is, of course, when your soul is all but out of you with joy, all you can do is try to make some more. Isn't that an odd thing? I think I need to dance on over to another thread and leave you a few more autumn moments. The aspen is my own tree, you know, and it IS enchanted! I'll tell you the story … and share some more Goddess Joy from tonight's waxing moon … and maybe another poem or two … I can't possibly go to sleep, there is too much color in the world …

The falling leaves drift by the window
The autumn leaves of red and gold
I see your lips, the summer kisses
The sun-burned hands I used to hold

Since you went away the days grow long
And soon I'll hear old winter's song
But I miss you most of all my darling
When autumn leaves start to fall

Fall

Down! Down!

Down, down!
Yellow and brown
The leaves are falling
Over the town.

September is a time
Of beginning for all,
Beginning of school
Beginning of fall.

The sunflower children
Nod to the sun.
Summer is over,
Fall has begun!

The leaves are falling
One by one.
Summer's over
School's begun.

Off to school
We go together
In September's
Sunny weather.

“Come, little leaves,” said the wind one day,
“Come o'er the meadows with me and play:
Put on your dresses of red and gold -
For summer is gone and the days grow cold.”

A Little Elf

A little elf
Sat in a tree
Painting leaves
To throw at me.

Leaves of yellow
And leaves of red
Came tumbling down
About my head.

Cornflake leaves
Upon the trees -
Are they a breakfast
For the breeze?

I Love Fall

I love fall! Fall is exciting.
It's apples and cider.
It's an airborne spider.
It's pumpkins in bins.
It's burrs on dog's chins.
It's wind blowing leaves.
It's chilly red knees.
It's nuts on the ground.
It's a crisp dry sound.
It's green leaves turning
And the smell of them burning.
It's clouds in the sky.
It's fall. That's why…
I love fall.

September

The breezes taste
     Of apple peel.
The air is full
     Of smells to feel-
Ripe fruit, old footballs,
     Burning brush,
New books, erasers,
     Chalk, and such.
The bee, his hive,
     Well-honeyed hum,
And Mother cuts
     Chrysanthemums.
Like plates washed clean
     With suds, the days
Are polished with
     A morning haze.

John Updike

September

A road like brown ribbon
A sky that is blue
A forest of green
With that sky peeping through.
Asters, deep purple,
A grasshopper's call,
Today it is summer,
Tomorrow is fall.

September

September means its time again
for going off to school.
The days are getting shorter
and the nights are getting cool.

Autumn Wind

When autumn wind goes running
It does some magic things.
It gives the shadows dancing shoes,
It gives the bright leaves wings -
When autumn wind goes running.

It curls the bonfire's tail of smoke
And shares a little whispered joke
With cornstalks who delight to prattle,
It turns a seed pod into a rattle -
When autumn wind goes running.

The Leaves of the Trees
(to the tune of “The Wheels on the Bus”)

The leaves of the trees turn orange and red
orange and red, orange and red
The leaves of the trees turn orange and red
All through the town.

The leaves of the trees come tumbling down
tumbling down, tumbling down
The leaves of the trees come tumbling down
All through the town.

The leaves on the ground go swish, swish, swish
Swish, swish, swish, swish, swish, swish,
The leaves on the ground go swish, swish, swish
All through the town.

Irmgard Guertges

Leaves in the autumn came tumbling down,
Scarlet and yellow, russet and brown,
Leaves in the garden were swept in a heap,
Trees were undressing ready for sleep.

Red leaves and yellow leaves
Orange leaves and brown,
Leaves are dancing everywhere
Happily dancing down.

The Leaves are Falling Down
(to the tune of “The Farmer in the Dell”)

The leaves are falling down
The leaves are falling down
School is here and fall in near
The leaves are falling down.

The leaves are falling down
The leaves are falling down
Some are red and some are brown
The leaves are falling down.

The leaves are falling down
The leaves are falling down
They tickle your nose and touch your toes
The leaves are falling down.

June Haggard

October

October's the month
When the smallest breeze
Gives us a shower
Of autumn leaves.
Bonfires and pumpkins,
Leaves sailing down -
October is red
And golden and brown.

October leaves are lovely
They rustle when I run
Sometimes I make a heap
And jump in them for fun.

Autumn leaves float quietly down
And form a carpet on the ground.
But when those leaves are stepped upon,
Listen for the crackling sound.

November

No shade, no shine,
No butterflies, no bees,
No fruits, no flowers,
No leaves, no birds,
November.

November

In November
Dark comes soon.
We turn on the lights
In the afternoon.

November

No sunshine, lots of rain,
No warm days, snow again!
No bugs or bees
No leaves on trees.
You must remember
This is NOvember!

November

Now the autumn days are gone
Frost is sparkling on the lawn,
Windows winking cheerful lights
Warm the cold November nights.

Autumn Bird Song

Over the housetops,
Over the trees,
Winging their way
In a stiff fall breeze.

A flock of birds
Is flying along
Southward, for winter,
Singing a song.

Singing a song
They all like to sing,
“We'll see you again
When it's spring, spring, spring.”

The leaves
Take their leave
They depart with the nature of a higher art
And in the wind they begin
To allow another solstice
To start

Falling leaves return to their roots - and thus the cycle of LIFE continues

Faced with the tears of joy which came to my eyes whilst reading this zPod thread - so magnificently illustrated with the most beautiful autumnal photography - I could do no other than pay respect to Deng Ming-Dao's  - TAO perspective - and post an extra-special zBlog entry.

Please feel free to consult same.

The poems, the inspiration and the energy are just amazing…

Sacred joy-filled moments
Precious days of autumn
Leaves that whisper gently
as they dance and fall so softly

Wow! It is wonderful that there are so many nature lovers here! :D Steve, your poem in the shape of a maple leaf was awesome! Everyone's poetry and pics were great. Samme and Joy, I admire the creativity the two of you have! Great job, everyone! >APPLAUSE!!!<

Oh ma gosh! Was that a Robert Frost poem up there?! Ahhh, what a poet he was.

Fall is a time for reflection (I believe that, anyway) so I would like to spread a little of Rumi's words:

A craftsman pulled a reed from the reedbed,
cut holes in it, and called it a human being.

Since then, it's been wailing a tender agony
of parting, never mentioning the skill
that gave it life as a flute.                                                    ( pg. 146)

Adding to this incredible Autumn thread, I found this delightful poem today in one of my children’s books that we read this morning in school. The poem, ‘October’ is one verse from Elsa Beskow’s picture books for children, “Around the Year”. Her awesome books have been around for over a century. If you have children, do a search and check out her lovely story books. The pictures in them are so sweet and captivating to children and adults alike!
love, Nicola

OCTOBER

Golden, you are,
October,
Golden sovereigns on your trees.
Golden guineas on your floor,
golden coins of leaves
that fall
for us to scuffle through
and rustle
and rattle
and hustle
and scrabble
and dabble
and paddle
as they fall
into an October carpet
which hides
our shoes.

Darina, I look and I read in awe and appreciation of your collection of words and images that speaks from the heart to the splendor of autumn, and I am delighted to see that it has roused such an impassioned response from the Zaadz community. Thank you for the inclusion of my own words; they express a moment in time that I will cherish forever, and I am pleased to see that you have included it in the midst of such timeless gems of inspiration, past and present. May you continue to fill our souls with joy … Christopher

Re: The Rilke Project - Random Acts of Kindness

Joy Bringer said Oct 28, 2006, 9:02 PM:

Samme,

Life really reveals itself more than ever… And it is easier to think, wish and daydream than DO the great good things we all intend…  But do we will, even small things with great love for we know that in order to make a difference we have to BE the difference and that is what YOU are and that is why we are blessed to know you, have you as a friend and just be you…

So, to the crux of this LOVE-ly project. I shall start with 2 things that I suggest each of us can do. And because Rilke said it so wisely and well:
Perhaps everything terrible is in its deepest being something that needs our love.”

One thing we can do is support a friend in need Johann aka Camelot's Daddy that wants to help us help himself and help the world. If you have received his moving email you know about the challenges of this wounded healer already, if not, you can read and feel it in his blog. I have taken a small action to support him and his project with whatever I can at present and I invite you to find a way to help him out even if it is just by spreading the word…

Another opportunity to do a random act of kindness right in zaadz digiverse is to befriend a still 'friend-less” new zaadzster. You wonder why? - because it feels good to have a friend right from the very first day you start and to receive a friendly invite from a stranger. This was one of the very first things that attracted me and surprised me in zaadz and since this practice is no longer a fact for whatever reason you can be-come the first friend for someone else. How? - by going to the Zaadzsters page and clicking on the very last page to the very right which happens to be 515 today, because of the 25712 members as of today! Then you can choose anyone at random or driven by intuition, attraction, synchronicity or complete randomness if there is such a thing:) The rest will be love & friendship in action.

In gratitude and with love,
D a r i n a :)

In response to Samme - the leaves are falling … and returning to their roots -

I have made the offer elsewhere of 3nova ltd in respect to my Just ADD Water zBlog post ….

- once we have ascertained - how much Camelot Daddy needs for a computer in the first instance - then arranged for installation - should we not consider - using www.3nova.com - to set up emails/payments etc. ?

In the context of the ” Eat 5 vegetablesa DAY ” initiative - I have followed through on Darina’s suggestion and invited as friends 10 of those that are so obviously in need - intuitively so to speak - and made IT an advanced new-year’s resolution to invite at least 5 a day from here on out.

Michael said Nov 5, 2006, 12:06 AM:

Samme’s earlier Autumn by Rainer Marie Rilke post to this thread is ABSOLUTELY iconically descriptive of what I envisage for www.galactica.net - an initial grouping of people - with different perspectives - connected in common purpose - all committed to enveloping themselves in the ONE light - which of course is LOVE - working for the mutual benefit of ALL.

This is THE place that I genuinely believe that Brian is trying to create.

But in order that ALL 6 billion of us should have the opportunity to participate in this NEW ORDER ENVIRONMENT - which I have very briefly described in today’s 5th November zBlog post - we ALL 6 billion of us have to be presented with a methodolgy appropriate to our own individual COMPLETELY different ethnic, cultural, economic, religious, scientific, political perspective.

I believe that various combinations of 49 specific perspectives - and ONE tunnel for each - constitute a major component part of the ALL inclusive 3D model of integral development which I have mentioned in my Expanding World Views zBlog post.

I established 3nova Ltd. / www.3nova.com / et al to implement the 3D Model to provide the mechanism by which each and every one of us would have the opportunity to “get to” www.galactica.net and for the last 6 months have gradually been sowing the “seeds” of such an initiative - confident that zaadz could indeed become the conduit “gate-keeper” as exemplifed in Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter & Spring.

My European PAL European TV version of the DVD establishes Autumn as the season of course - rather than the US “perspective” of FALL - but out of my Bravo! respect for zaadz and the predominance of US zaadsters - I chose to illustrate my blog with your version of the DVD cover. Mine, however, depicts the ALL important “boat journey” to the “floating sanctury” on the lake - having passed by the “gate-keepers” of the near shore.

My very kindest regards and best wishes to you all this 5th of November

intuitively yours - michael

And a poetic beauty from Nikki...

The last leaves of autumn

So this is how you bid farewell,
Your gift of gold, kept safe a year,
Like every other treasure is.
Worn so simply, almost barely, almost.
I might have missed it walking by,
So your lover of yesterday, sent one ray
Which caught my eye.
I stopped, no breath, lest the wind
Came rushing in.

Thought I'd toss in some seasonal whimsy….

come together

by Debby J Weinberger
Wednesday, November 15, 2006

these two have been hanging around our back hillside making quite a scene…the poem tells the story

he'd been hangin around the past few days
pacing and panting looking insane
he'd run up the hillside
and bound through the leaves
his tongue hanging out
his eyes looking glazed
he had one mission driving him on
focused, determined… to mate on the lawn

she'd feigned her interest time after time
looking away and side stepping with yawns
her big doe eyes were not quite there
as she nibbled the leaves and didn't care

he rutted and hoofed shaking his head
come on baby… let's mate instead
maybe later… her eyes seemed to say
come around later some other day

well, somethin' happened this very morn
as i looked out the window sometime after dawn
there they were… laying quiet on the hill
while everything around them
seemed perfectly still
at ease, at peace, and looking contented
in nature, these lovers… had blissfully connected
