 What comes to mind when you hear SAND ART? - may be sand castles & amazing sculptures on the beach? Or the amazing Buddhist colorful sand mandalas? And rightfully so, but they are just part of it. The name “Sand Animation Art” succinctly explains the medium, but does not fully articulate the wonder that it actually often provokes. Always in constant motion, evolving every second, Sand Animation Art involves subtle participation as we watch unique live performance art created before our very eyes, minds & hearts. Usually accomplished using a projector & screen, the artist, first sprinkles a layer of sand on a transparent canvas & then proceeds to re-create intricate, seemingly 3 dimensional landscapes, symbols & figures. As soon as the first creation is finished, it is swept away or transformed to become something entirely new & original. Temporary renderings are completed at a really swift pace with precise and gentle hand strokes to our rising amazement. The synchronized music adds to the hypnotic effect, even when watching it on an online video, to complete the mesmerizing effect of these sand art masters & their incredible creations. Sand Animation Art was pioneered by Caroline Leaf who made her first sand animation film in 1968. Ever since, a small dedicated group of people from around the world continues to practice this rare & captivating form to our delight, innertainment and inspiration.
