Please introduce yourself....

Shelly said Mar 22, 2006, 8:44 AM:

Welcome to the Kindred Spirits pod. Do take a moment and introduce yourself and tell us about your connection to animals. What passions for animals do you embody? How are you involved with them? Are there any causes that you would like to focus on in this pod? Feel free to share what you feel called to.

To start with, I am Shelly and I have loved all animals for as long as I can remember. Horses seem to have stolen my heart and are my greatest passion. I live with a 2 AQHA Quarter Horses a miniature horse, a golden retriever, three cats, six bunnies and a slew of wild birds and critters that stop by from time to time.

I take a completely holistic approach to my animals care. They are free of all chemicals and have as close to an organic diet that I can obtain. When necessary I use energetic healing and allopathic only in times of emergency. Holistic Veterinary medicine is a great passion of mine. I am an advocate for holistic veterinary programs and students and dream of co-creating an all holistic DVM program sometime in the future so that veterinary students have an accredited option with a holistic approach during their schooling.

I am currently working on the horse slaughter issue that is happening in the US and look forward to a time when there is no such thing as horse slaughter anywhere on the planet. I know that we can not just close down the slaughter plants and call it a day. There will still be an over abundance of horses that need to be addressed. I beleive that the answer to all animal issues and injustices is a shift in human consciousness that will only take place through education and empathy.

It is also an active dream of mine to create a fully sustainable, purely holistic healing center for special needs horses and other animals with a focus on cancer and nuerological disorders. I am moving this year to a place that is more conducive of the creation of this facitlity. Once running, I intend it to be a place for holistic veterinary students to learn and witness the amazing powers of natural medicine. I also intend to incorporate an element of hospice to help animals with a natural progression from the planet, create a junior-holistic vet camp for children that are considering being veterinarians some day, bringing at-risk and special needs children together with the animals for love and healing and over all have it be a place of harmony, peace and love for all who pass through the gates.

Do share with us some of your dreams for the animals.

Hi,

I am Chance from GA. Personal stuff, or some of it is on my profile if anyone is interested in that sort of thing.

I've been a lover of animals all my life, or for as long as I can remember. My first memory is of a beautiful black cat (called Blackbaby) who adopted me when I was about 3 or so. I've had a few cats since them, a couple were really special to me.

I've shared my life with dogs for nearly as long. First the Heinz 57 varieties, then a Golden Retriever, then tons of beagles and bassets. Nothing melts my heart more than a new litter of beagle babies. I love the way they smell and those little pink tongues sticking out of there mouth.. and then watching their personalities develop…

I currently have an old, grizzled faced Basset named Lacey. She is the a great old gal! We are good buddies. I also have a Peek-a-poo named PeeDee. He was intended as my daughter's pet, but I adopted him. He's an inside dog, Lacey prefers to be outside. PeeDee and I are good friends too, he is a great companion. He looks a bit like a sissy at times, but he is a tough little guy.

About 18 or 20 months ago, I began studying Native American customs and beliefs. As I studied, I learned a bit about the Red Road, and I learned a little about Native American Animal Medicine. I've had some amazing experiences over the past year or so since I opened my eyes, heart, and mind more widely… more deeply regarding our animal friends.

I will read here a while and then when appropriate, I will share some of my memories and thoughts.

I look forward to sharing this place with you.

May you  walk in grace and peace.

Take care, Chance

Greetings,

I'm Karen.  I run an animal rescue organization in Los Angeles.  We rescue animals primarily from the LA City shelters before they are euthanized, then we get them healthy (physically and emotionally) and then find them new homes.  We use foster families for their care since we believe a home environment is best for companion animals.  We are 100% volunteer and although we've rescued and rehomed over 1,500 animals in the last few years, its sad to know we hardly make any kind of dent in the tens of thousands of precious lives taken at LA City shelters each year.

I envision and work to bring about a time when people recognize that non-human animals are not put on this earth for the sake of the human animals.  We all co-create this reality together.

I've loved all animals for as long as I can remember.  When I was a small child, my favorite passtime was to go anywhere quiet and wait to see if any animals would show up.   Any bird, lizard, mouse or even bugs would make my day.  OK, I know that makes me the ultimate oddball, especially for a girl, but there it is.

I am very interested in any projects that support and encourage knowledge of and reverence for all life on this planet.

Count me in!

Hello everyone, and I apologize for not being more active here - but as I'm sure you'll understand, I spend more time with my dogs than online~

I am a psychologist by profession but a full time animal lover - I often wish I'd become an animal behaviorist, vet, or something along those lines.  My husband and I share our lives with 4 dogs and 2 cats - and we foster homeless dogs when they choose us for that purpose.  I feel a deep connection with animals - particularly dogs, since I know them better than any other kind of animal - and I view them as equals (or superiors in some respects).  My dogs have taught me more about love, life and spiritual truth than any other source.  I am a vegetarian of several years and I think it's important to cultivate compassion to every kind of sentient being - and that humans do not have supremacy on this earth to do whatever they want to whatever or whoever they want.

However, I live in Texas and I often feel that I am a fringe-freak since so few share my views.  I think more than anything I am looking for support and companionship in this pod!

thanks for reading.

I love dogs but horses are such a focus for me right now. I've been able to rescue a few horses and I'm still retraining a QH with significant PTSD… the most skeptical horse I”ve ever been around,  really.

{{so tickled}}

Oh, what a lovely group of souls we are gathering. But doesn't it just always seem that animal people are good folks to be around? I feel so blessed to be in the presence of such kind hearted and generous beings….. and their beloved animal companions. (feel free to share their photos)(hint) Thank you all who have joined us.

Cherrie, thanks for your persistance and “door banging”. You were actually the one who got me focusing on the pod and bringing it to the masses. Lovely catalyst you are.

Chance, It would be lovely if you share more of your discoveries about the Native American Animal Medicine. I am intrigued! I also share your love for Goldens and Bassets. When I was a child I had a Bassett named Rufus and when he was a puppy, his ears were so long that he stepped on them and did a summersault each time he did. It was really quite cute. Thanks for that memory.

Karen, fellow oddball, I so understand your childhood preference, as I am sure many here do. So if you must be called an oddball for recognizing sentience even at a young age, then I say it is an honor to wear that title! Thank you so much for all you are doing in LA. Your “drop in the bucket” is so much more than that for the animals that you have saved. To them it is everything and I know your work is touching lives 10 fold when you might not even be noticing.

Stephanie, Welcome! I have the desire to create a support system and companionship for those who dedicate their lives to animals and often times feel so alone in doing so. You have come to the right place. Animal work is sometimes tedious and heart-breaking, so it is my intention to create a place of healing and harmony for not only the animals, but for those who provide for them as well. My degree is in psychology with an emphasis on the healing ability of the human/ animal bond. I am witness everyday to the healing that takes place when animals and humans come together. Violet is an obvious asset in this feild and do let me know if I can help with any connections.

Violet O', many blessing to you with all your rescue work but especially with that QH. I know it has found it's way to you for a reason and am certain that you can help it return to its Higher being, free of fear and anger and dis-ease…. as it was originally intended. Do let us know how it's healing progresses.

CalmEagle…. always the bringer of joy and light. Thank you so much for sharing the beautiful art…..I love the bright colors and perky feel to her work. Very joyful.  You have inspired me to create a complete section for animal related art. Great idea my friend! I hope you might cross post this message over there and share any others you might happen along.

To all those who may be stopping by to join us and have not introduced themselves and to all those present here in this feed, I am honored to have you join us. I welcome your contribution in making this a supportive, caring space for animals and humans alike and I send blessing to you, your animals and the work that you do in support of our non-human friends. May we all come together to make a difference in the lives of our fellow creatures.

Kindest regards,
Shelly

Hello;

I am Katie. I have been rescuing animals all my life. Now I live at home again, but managed to pull off keeping 3 of my baby's (cats) with me. My Isabelle was in foster care. I had to move back home last year due to many health issues, and spinal damage. My soul kitty is my Abu. She's my editor, and was my main photo for a long time. Our old man Ted gew quite ill in January he was not eating and passing only blood. It was clear he was riddled with neoplasm's via bloodwork. I think the poor old bugger would have tried to fight it out, but it was horrendous to watch, and his white blood cel count was triple the norm. A few months after Ted's passing I brought Isabelle home, now my 13 year old queenie is back to a momm'as girl and goes for an occasional suckling on my earlobe. Some kids never grow up.

If not for Abu, and my rest time last year and we would just lay together and meditate, she's wrap her paw around my neck and purr, we'd pray and that simple love between that cat and myself kept me alive and sane during a very difficult time. I  spent most my time in bed back then and was so ill, I wondered why I had to suffer so, but If our troubles take us to prayer, they have served their purpose. Thank God for Abu and her time with me, that saved my life, and when she was 2 weeks old, I saved hers, bottle fed and taught her to eat and how to go potty. She has returned the gift 10 fold.

My other little man is Zeke, and he is a gentle loving man, born in my bath room November 8th 2003, a week before my birthday. In deciding what kitten to keep, he made it very clear he was the man, and has proven to be quite the endearing young man.

I am by no means limited to cats, I have rescued and placed dogs, (1 tiny wild one had to go back to the wild) rabbits- 2 other large lops, cockatiels, parakeets, budgies. I'd find hurt animals and go out of my way to get it help, some domestic, some wild. Thats just part of me and my spirit I am forever grateful is a part of me. Now I see the same trait in my late brothers 4 year old grand daughter- who is my great niece, and what a sweet gentle spirit she has and so much love to give. Its a beautiful thing :)

Hello Everyone,

Jojo here but enough about me..let me go-on about my four legged family.

I live with 2 canine friends, Shue the one eyed, three legged wonder dog and Kidd, the not too bright but much loved dog and Tilly the tortoise. I was recently introduced to holistic medicine when Shue was diagnosed with osteosarcoma (bone cancer) early March, it was quite advanced so her front leg was amputated. We opted not to do chemo due list off side effects (like death on first treatment) and her age (12-1/2), so my friend, who is also our vet. gave her blessings and introduced us to a fantastic holistic veterinarian. Shue is now on a low carb. diet, and a cocktail of herbs and vitamin which she strangely enough…loves. She’s back to running and playing and seems her happy active self again. I would love to learn more here about the holistic care and others people experiences.

Another love of mine is the Moonridge Zoo…which is not really a zoo. They rehab and release injured wildlife and those that cannot be released live out there. They loose their lease on the current property in 2009 and need funds for relocation. Pay them a visit if you can, they offer a tour and tell you about the residents and the reason(s) they cannot be release back into the wild. They need to raise approximately $15 million for the new place and the move. Here a link to their site: http://www.moonridgezoo.org/lfwc/aboutus.html

Holistic healing is a huge passion of mine so I'd love to hear how she progresses and I will do my best to bring in cool info about animal holistic care and medicine.  I welcome others to do the same.

I will certainly stop by Moonridge Zoo's site and send them some prayers as well. Maybe you'd like to post a little snippet about their needs over in the Action Needed discussion

Hello Everyone!

My name is Melissa and like the rest of you, I deeply love being around animals.  I live in New York City now, but grew up in Northeast Pennsylvania where I was surrounded by all kinds of animals.  We had everything from cats and dogs, to horses and turtles, goats and bunnys, even a spider monkey and a raccoon.

It seemed almost all of our animals were adopted, and my parents taught us how to love our animals and treat them with respect from a very early age.  I am currently trying  desperately to find a job where I can dedicate myself to rescue and rehabilitation but can't seem to break through.  It is so frustrating….

I have extensive experience with animals who are ill, especially diabetes.  My sweet love Jack who passed away had lived with the desease for over 8 years.  If you have any questions concerning this please feel free to contact me, I am more than happy to help.

Namaste,

Melissa

Hi Melissa,

Great to have you join the group and what a wealth of knowledge and experience you have to share!

Three things immediately came to mind when you mentioned wanting to find work in animal rescue in NY. I am uncertain if or how they apply to you but I always trust my first intuitions and wanted to share. I know you will take what serves you and discard the rest.

The first is:
MARTIN GOLDSTEIN , DVM
SMITH RIDGE VETERINARY CENTER
230 OAKRIDGE COMMON
SOUTH SALEM , NY 10590
Phone: 914-533-6066

http://www.smithridge.com/

The second is:
http://www.greenchimneys.org/

And the trird would be to create a business specializing in assisting owners that have animals with diabetes. There is a big need for it and if you worked directly with a well known vet (like the one above) they might endorse your at-home” care as follow-up to office visits. Maybe it would be to help teach the owners about diet, injections, homeopathy, etc. Possibly providing specialized care for the animals while the owners are away? You could also provide a line of food that is specifically for diabetic animals….. or provide home cooked meals to clients. End of life care and bereavement for the elderly animals would be a much needed aspect to the whole package. I have a friend that provides such services through her animal retreat for special needs and elderly animals….mainly cats and dogs. http://www.brighthaven.org/   and their video:  Beautiful Bright Haven

I send lots of love and prayers in support of you finding the perfect connection so that you may do that which you already “be” and get paid well for it also. We all deserve to be payed well for that which we love and the animals certainly deserve to have you on thier team and working for their well-being.

Paws-atively Yours,
Shelly

Greetings All,

I, too, have been an animal person all my life.  My mother often says that she doesn't quite trust anyone that isn't an animal person :)  and I understand completely.   I cannot imagine life without at least one dog and, thanks to my son, we have birds and fish in the house as well.  No cats at present…too many birds

I've been rescuing wild critters as long as I can remember but I finally got trained and permitted to do wildlife rehab about 10 years ago.  I've also been a raptor biologist and environmental educator for about 8 years.  Now we share our home with 10 permanent birds and a variety of transient friends each year.  I focus on rehabbing raptors, roadrunners, and hummingbirds but take all sorts of birds and work with mammals, reptiles, and amphibians at our clinic too.

I look forward to exploring this pod and getting to know you!

Hi Kristin,

So cool to have a real life wildlife-rehabber in our midst. I wish you great success with your healing endeavors.

I think I make up for the cats that you don't have. :) And as you can imagine…..there are no birds(indoors) for that very reason. Sure do love to provide for and watch the wild birds though.

Tell me, why is it that in some states it is illegal for rehabbers to care for mammals? Is it because of rabies potential? It breaks my heart that bunnies and squirrels and such can not be helped here in Nevada. To do so is illegal and to do what is legal (call animal control) assures a certain death in a scary and unfamilar place. Kinda doesn't make sense to me.

Keep us apprised of your stories! Thanks for joining us.

As I stated on the application to join this forum, I am a old man with all the answers. This was a true statement up until this summer. Now this is not so. I have had the humble honor of caring for and loving many animals in this life. Several I have rescued, most I have raised from infancy, The rescued ones include a great horned owl, a adult crow, and a dog on her way to the killing chamber at a pound, who by the way is laying on my feet as I type this entry. None of the aforementioned have done to me what the last rescue has done. This is prompting the search.

This summer 2006 I rescued a nestling crow. So not to take up valuable space here the partial story of the rescue can be found at, http://home.joimail.com/~goglk/ .

Now for the rest of the story regarding Pooder. I took him to the society on a Monday and made several follow up calls to check on his progress, in which I was told he was doing just fine with the un-imprinting. Some three weeks after handing him over to the Audubon Society it all began to unravel. I should state here I do not remember dreams, if I dream at all, except for this one that is still in my mind. The dream came to me on a Thursday, and was so real that it woke me from a sound sleep, and I was unable to return to sleep. The dream was that I was looking out of the kitchen window and Pooder landed on the side fence top, where he usually landed when he wanted some attention. When I rushed to the door and opened it Pooder was no where to be found, this ended the dream. Weird, I thought, then came the phone call from the Audubon Society, Pooder was dead. He had apparently flown into some support while in the flight cage and died of a hemorrhage. I believe, and so does a very close friend, that Pooder stopped by on Thursday, in the dream to just say goodbye. If this is true then I do not have any answers at all, and thus begins the search.

To this day I find myself looking to the sky and all passing crows hoping for his return, if only in a dream. I now sport a beautiful portrait tattoo of him. Why THIS kindred soul, and why the lost feeling? To much for this old man to fathom. We love each other and am awaiting the rainbow bridge.

while we always had cats on the farm, this is my first cat … so i look forward to learning about her from those of you with more feline experience than i have … she's the coolest thing, but they are so different from the dogs!

thanks for planting this pod, i look forward to watering it with you.

My name is David Crofts Munro (formally known on Zaadz as Zazen and before that Daibhidh).  I am a Zen Buddhist and my favorite occupational practices to this day have been floristry and ranching.  The latter introduced me to what is today a supreme love and respect for horses -but also put me more in touch with the natural world around me, as it is that which I have worked with, in harmony, in order to get further along with my own life.

My favorite animals include fish (tropical, fresh water, marine)/horses/cows/sheep and goats and lamas/koala bears/capibaras/panda bears/bears the world over.

Nice to meet y'all.

I have been an animal lover all my life and I cannot imagine life without all my critters around. We live on the high plains of NM and currently have four horses, one donkey, eight ducks, four cats, two retired racing Greyhounds, and one deaf Jack Russell Terrorist :-)

Of all my animals my horses and donkey are my favorites. They feed my soul like no other animal. There is nothing as sweet as a donkey hug, or a horse that trusts you enough to fall asleep in your arms. It is the truest form of trust there is….

We have Morgan horses. We love this breed for their work ethic, and their love of people. We are currently training two youngsters, our four year old filly and our three year old gelding. We also have a 9 year old broodmare and a 6 year old Mustang/Morgan cross. We enjoy riding and training our horses.

Unfortunately I am sidelined with a back injury, so no riding for me for another few weeks :-(

Hello! I am Jenn. Since I can remember I have had at least 3 or more pets. My family loves animals and just cannot say no to one that needs a home. 4 years ago my mom found a little black kitten that was a runt so we thought that momma cat left him there and my mom brought him home and now I am mom for him. But other than Pantera (the little black cat) I have 1 dog (kobe), another cat (BB King), and 2 birds (Mackie and Tweety).

Hi I'm saraha better known to friends as Xantall. I've loved animals mainly wolves and foxes but I love big cats as well. I'm starting school in the spring for biology. I want to continue on to start an animal santuary someday to protect and teach others of them and hope I can help as many creatures as I can.

Hi everyone my name is Aimee.

Ever since I can remember I’ve been in love with animals. At the age of 7 or so I started bringing in the neighborhood animals to foster them back to health and then give them to the nearest shelter to find homes. Just recently my boyfriend found a couple of kittens at his work inside a wrecked Jetta (he works at Volkswagen ;)) and I decided at once I would take the only living one home and nurse him back to health. He was only a couple days old so we think the momma had them and something happened to her. “Jetta” is perfectly well and happy kitten now.  When I got older I started volunteering at the same shelter after school and on weekends. Right now I’m trying to get my degree to become a veterinarian technician so one day I can own my own non-profit shelter that takes in neglected, abused, and “old” animals :)

Hi Everyone!
Wonderful to be here. I am Jodi. I am a huge animal lover. I have two canine friends living here, two horses, a chameleon in my garden and a very active bird feeder.
It is great to be amongst like minded people. :)

Hello, my name is Krissy aka Wysteria Wind Ryder.  I grew up on a dairy farm so I have always been around different animals, cows, horse, pigs, chickens, goats dogs and many cats.  Obviously, I love animals.  As of now, I only have one dog, Molly and a cat, Mittens.  I lost my other cat, Chloe last fall (very sad time).  I am a novice Wiccan and searching different sites for more information.  The word Gaia was first introduced to me in a blog written by a man who had had an near death experience.  In his blog he referred to a “god”  that he was brought to, as Gaia.  Gaia lived in a large white house with many libraries and many more books.  That was few years ago, I wish I could find that blog today.  Sorry for getting off the subject a bit.  Looking forward to learning more on this site.

Yes, losing beloved animal friends is a very tough thing. I didn't really understand grief until I went thru some animal deaths.

You have any pics of Chloe?

Starting wicca eh? That's a fun time.
