Tuan posted the question “Is Science a cult?” on the sciences board. After some discussion it became evident that the question is best explored on this board or/and in Psychology.

This subject belongs to the theory of knowledge, epistemology. Serious thinking will be aided by investigating the work of one of the great, if not the greatest, modern philosophers of science, Karl Popper (see among other works his Conjectures And Refutations).

I will suggest also “Phenomenology and the Sciences of Man” from “The Primacy of Perception” by Maurice Merleau-Ponty, “The Pleasure of Finding Things Out” and “The Meaning of It All” both by Richard Feynman. I am currently reading “The Character of Physical Law” by Feynman.

Would it be worth scanning in the table of contents from some of the recommended texts? Also would there have to be copyright considerations?

Janos, I would be happy to do that when I have time later. I do not think there should be copyright problems under fair-use provisions (of course, who knows what heights of stupidity in copyright assertion can be reached?) If we copy certain limited passages for the purposes of discussion and review these uses are protected.

Speaking from one's own set of experiences and knowledge is always insightful, but discussing and sharing individual thoughts on certain philosophical works that everyone has read is bound to be just as fruitful.

I think the suggestion that we read Popper, Merleau-Ponty, and Feynman sounds promising, as it does daunting–philosophical and theoretical readings are just soo dense.

—I would love to help in setting up one of two of the readings online by scanning them into PDF files—
what do you  all think?

A zaadz friend and I very recently set up a g-mail account with the sign in name “classicalchinesepod” and the password “copy1eft” I then uploaded two chapters of a textbook onto the account.

I am not sure whether this is an infringement on copy-right laws, but it is quite a discrete form of file sharing.

Would opening up an evolutionaries gmail account be an efficient way of discretely distributing such materials to the participants of the pod/thread?
