Kill your TV, find more time to blog

Maile said Mar 29, 2006, 7:37 AM:

Killing my TV has been a great experience (though admittedly I still watch the occasional Netflix–can't give up my David Attenborough just yet).   it's given me more time to do productive, happy, flowing things, like blog.

I'm wondering if anyone else has gone tv-less or is considering it.  If so, what has been your experience?  I can't believe it too me so long to figure this one out!

I have sorted have done that. Actually, I have renounced TV for certain lengths of time in the past, more in the spiritual sense. Sort of like Lent for Buddhists:) However, in the last 8 months, my wife and I have not had our TV hooked up to cable (we get it free living in family housing at the university). That makes a huge difference. Now the only thing we watch is movies from blockbuster online. It's a bit more balanced this way. I decided that some of the amazing movies we've seen are worth what they add to our lives than to totally ditch the TV. So long as it's not hooked to cable:P

As for the movies, we have used Zaadz as our source for recommendations:)

Yeah, I've been TV-less for about two years.  I thought I would miss it more, but really it's just a huge relief.  I've read tons of books, and my creativity is seeping out my ears now.  I would like to see some of the Simpsons episodes I've missed though.  It hasn't been cancelled, has it?

Namaste!

YOU ARE SO RIGHT!!! Except for that Netflix thing. Why? Because I don't have a TV and my laptop overheats when I use it to watch DVDs (and MPEGs, wink, wink).

My solution? I go to the movies, or hijack a friend's house and eat his food.

Hi everyone. I was sent a link to this page from a friend of a friend of a friend…. :-)
So, I joined.

I got rid of our family TV about 2 1/2 years ago and now have a website and book about living without TV.  I can attest to it being the best decision I have ever made for my family.  It takes a bit of time to adjust, but it is worth it.

The content, the medium, the time….  It's all just bad.  I've found that there is nothing good about TV that you cannot find with another medium, like a book, a website, or a movie.   Many people on this site have great, ambitious dreams….but you can't follow them when you are watching TV!

Here are a few quick tips for controlling viewing:

1) Cover your TV
2) Hide your remote
3) Unplug your TV, then take a minute to decide if you really want to watch something before you plug it back in.
4) Get rid of cable/satellite, which some have already done it seems
5) Make a list of 100 things you would like to do instead of TV and post it by your set
6) Get TV out of your bedrooms (recent study showed it cut sex life in half)
7) Make a schedule and stick to it

and of course…8) Get rid of your TV

Have a great day!

hahaha. welcome. that's classic SERENDIPITY if you ask me :-)

nice. thanks for the plug. i assure you, i will LINK TO YOUR SITE like Dunkin Donuts.

in general, i think you're right. but i won't go to the extreme when it comes to TV. watching TV is how i learned to speak and write English, and the Pop Culture is not all that bad. Jack Bauer will tell you that.

it's all about choices and priorities. for those who want to GROW UP really fast,  i say WATCH TV and assimilate all that you can, but when you reach a certain point and you want to GROW BEYOND what the POPCULTURE has to offer, then yes, you are now ready to TRASH YOUR TV. anything less is NOT VERY FLUFFY :-)

P.S. but you're right, some contents just F*CKING SUCK! except Fear Factor, THE APPRENTICE, and, yes,  America's Next Top Model because that show is sooooo HOT!
