November - Gratitude

Love

There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear…
[for] God is love
  ~  1 John 4:18, 16

There is no fear in love, and there is no liberation from fear without love.  Fear is always based on the supposition that we are unprotected, rejected, friendless.  If the fearful mind would entertain love, and the harmony and peace that go with it, it must turn from everything that denies this love and, trusting in Divine Guidance, open its being to the influx of love - not just love of God, but love of everything, for love is an all-inclusive conception.

“I will fear no evil for thou art with me.”  Today Divine love and infinite tenderness sustain me.  In order that I shall not separate myself from this love, I endeavor to see it reflected in everyone and everything.  I shall permit only that which is loving, kind, and true to find entrance to or to exit from my consciousness.  Thus shall I be assured that I am bathed in the warm glow of that Love that casteth out all fear.

Love is the self-givingness of the Spirit
through the desire of Life to express
 Itself in terms of creation.

EXPERIENCE

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
Psalm 23:1

We need spiritual experience, a first-hand knowledge of life and Reality…an idea has no real value until it becomes an experience.
The Science of Mind, page 445

THE answer to all of our life dilemmas lies within us, not outside of us.  People, things, and situations in the outer world come and go, but what is unchanging and unfailing is the measure of God's love for each of us.  Until we experience this love in the sacred sanctuary of our own soul, it is just an idea, not a reality.  God as an inner experience is available to each one of us.

When we quiet the mind and move inwardly away from the outer turmoil of live, we capture the essence of what it means to live and love in profound integrity and truth.  We experience the peace on earth we have so desperately been seeking, and we come to realize that nothing lasting can be attained outside of ourselves.

This inner communication with the indwelling Spirit can be the passion that lights up our lives and informs us through our own intuition.  It becomes a sacred dance–a unique experience of surrender, faith, and trust that quenches all of our thirst and supplies all of our needs.

So we listen in the stillness, not anticipating anything but rather just allowing the peace of God to wash over us.  We fall in love with our creator, and we are reminded and comforted by those words we have heard so often, “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.”

affirmation

I surrender completely into the fullness of God's infinite love!

365 Tao (by Deng Ming-Dao) # 313

Chameleon

If I don't want to be known, I cannot be known.
The best actor can divide role from self.
The best liar can divide truth from falsity.

People think that they know you.  Soon you begin to play the role that they place on you.  Why should you act a certain way to please others?  You should do things from your inner awareness and from your own feelings.  If they do not accord with the herd, then so much the better.

You should change when it pleases you.  Your life is flexible.  If you let other people shape you, then you will never know independence.

The sages say that all life is illusory, and they usually lament this.  The way of Tao is to use this fact and not let it oppress you.  If you want to dodge others, then step behind one of the myriad illusions in this world.  If you do not volunteer anything and you neither confirm or deny, the opinions of others can never stick to you.  Then you will be left in peace.

True sages never go by appearances.  When it comes to introspection, they are not deceived by the appearances their own minds spew out.  They know that if they want to get at the truth, then they must pierce to the very core.

So if you would hide from others, avail yourself of the false appearances of life.  If you would know yourself, distinguish between the false apperances of life.  Above all, do not be put off by the illusory nature of life.  Use it.  Everything in this life can be an advantage to the wise.

IN THE EYE OF THE SPARROW

In as much as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.
Matthew 25:40

We are to look for God in each other and love this God, forgetting all else.
The Science of Mind, page 459

RECENTLY, I came across a sparrow that had been injured.  The bird was already growing stiff, but was still breathing.  I knew I was doing little more than giving it a peaceful place to die.  When I picked it up, it opened its eyes and looked into mine, and I saw gratitude.  It was a brief moment in which God-as-sparrow acknowledged God-as-me.

So often, we find ourselves caught up in the doings of everyday life.  We rush from one thing to another, scarcely noticing our surroundings.  Yet if we allow ourselves to slow down, we will find that there are countless small opportunities for service.  Little miracles await our notice.  In these moments, we have the opportunity to see the world differently, beyond the conflict and drama into the unity that underlies all.

That was what happened to me on this day.  In the eye of that sparrow, I saw the mask slip.  I saw the reality—I saw God.  In our every act, we encounter ourselves at our deepest level of being.  Every act of service truly serves the one life that is the life of all.

affirmation

This day I open my eyes to the one life around me.  I know that all I encounter is God.  Every act of service I give is God serving God, and God loving God.

A Year With Rumi by Coleman Barks

Raw, Well-Cooked, and Burnt

You ask, Why do you cry
with such sweetness all around?

I weep as I make the honey,
wearing the shirt of a bee,
and I refuse to share this suffering.

I play the sky's harp.
I curl around my treasure like a snake.

You say, What is this I business?
Friend, I've been a long time away from that.

What you see here is your own reflection.
I am still raw, and at the same time
well-cooked, and burnt to a crisp.

No one can tell if I'm laughing
or weeping.  I wonder myself.
How can I be separated and yet in union?

Let Go, Let God
My spirit soars as I let go and trust God.

As I step out in faith to do something new and daring, I may feel like a skydiver moments before a jump. When I make the conscious choice to let go of my comfortable surroundings, I may experience a moment of fear. But like the skydiver, my fear is quickly replaced with exhilaration and excitement as I soar through the experience with complete trust. I let go of my fear. God is with me and all is well!

Letting go of fear is liberating. As I let go and trust God, I open the way for God's perfect expression within me and in all the circumstances of my life. I don't worry about the outcome, for I know that all is well. I know that God is in charge and that I am being divinely guided and blessed.

Trust in the Lord forever.–Isaiah 26:4

Kabbalah 365 - Daily Fruit from the Tree of Life
by Gershon Winkler

Day 313

Greater are the deeds of the righteous than the Creation of Heaven and Earth (Babylonian Talmud, Ketuvot 5a).  What did the sages mean by this?  For the creation of Heaven and Earth was the act of creating something out of nothing,  whereas the deeds of the righteous create nothing out of something.  All the actions of the righteous, even seemingly ordinary actions such as eating, transform the corporeal - the Some-Thing - into the realm of the Divine - the No-Thing.

- Eighteenth-century Rabbi Dov Baer of Mezeritch

Science of Mind textbook
pgs 314-315, 315.1-315.3

We would like to be happier, have greater physical health.  We would like to have more of what it takes to be happy, whether it be millions or marbles.  These things are nothing of themselves.  It is only when we think of them as entities, within themselves, that we fall down and worship them; and then that which we should possess, possesses and obsesses us.  Every great spiritual genius has taught us to this effect:  If you have possessions which possess you, it is better for you to lose them that you may understand their temporary, fleeting form.  No great spiritual teacher has denied the advisability of using possessions.  Emerson says to cast them upon every wind of heaven, do not hold them.  “Beware of holding too much good in your hand.”

We would like to help ourselves and each other through using the Law of Mind.  This we may do by treatment.  What is a treatment?  It is something the mind becomes aware of.  Someone might ask, “Is it something the Spirit of God does to us?”  Yes, the Spirit of God is everything, but the mind must accept, and since the mind cannot accept what it rejects, then the mind must unqualifiedly accept.  This is where the trouble comes in.  We all have the spiritual power to raise the dead, but we do not believe we have.  Our mind does not unqualifiedly accept this.  Therefore, that which we are, through disbelief, projects the form of have-not rather than the form of HAVE, but even in taking the form of have-not, it demonstrates that is has what it BELIEVES.

We enter the Absolute in such degree as we withdraw from the relative.  The Bible tells us not to count our enemies.  It is not easy, is it, to turn from a disease and KNOW THAT THERE IS NO DISEASE, when we know very well that it is an experience of the moment.  This is not easy, but the one who can do just this, can heal.  The All-Creative Wisdom does not think one thing is difficult and another easy.  With God all things are possible.  We must know this and this Power of God must be hooked up with our thought, with what we are doing.  Energy unconnected does nothing, it is only when it is used, properly directed, that it accomplishes things.
