debyemm I moved the Rumi Quote to Related Philosophies, Books & Authors. The Rumi's in the Daily Guides are related to a book by Coleman Barks that breaks down some of the poems into daily readings. I think a thread devoted only to ANY quotes by Rumi anyone might want to post is a good idea. I have a new Coleman Barks book of more Rumi translations that will probably fit into there in the future. (3 months ago)

FIRE WITHIN

Someday, after we have mastered the winds, the waves, the tides and gravity, we shall harness for God the energies of love.  Then for the second time in the history of the world, man will have discovered fire.
Pierre Teilhard de Chardin

Some day we shall learn to lay our burdens on the alter of Love, that they may be consumed by the fire of faith in the Living Spirit.
The Science of Mind, page 335

I HAVE spent most of my life rushing around, constantly working, taking classes; my life had become so busy, I barely had time to breathe.  The truth of the matter is that I was running away from myself.  All that rushing around relieved me of the responsibility of being fully present and alive-it was a slow death.

Now I sit in the midst of the fire.  There is such passion burning within me.  The passion is for life and living!  The passion is for you to see who I truly am and for me to see who you truly are!  The passion is for me to feel love beyond all fear and to let you know how we are the love of God!

This passion is consuming me now.  It seems so self-absorbed that sometimes my human mind tries to judge it as not good-this absorption into self-but then I rest in the knowledge that my own unique path has brought me to this place.  This is truly living from the inside-out.  I have released my belief that rushing around made me safe in a complex world.  I am safe in the midst of the silence of my own soul-I am safe in God!

affirmation

The passion burns within me for love and for life!

Spirit

Now there are diversities of gifts,
but the same Spirit…
It is the Spirit that quickeneth
~  1 Corinthians 12:4 and John 6:63

Out of unity comes variety.  All things are made from one formless Substance.  The invisible essence of everything is pure spirit.  It is a realization of this Spirit at the center of everything that enables us to see God in everyone. “It is the Spirit that quickeneth.”  When we recognize the Spirit in anything or anyone, there is an equal reaction from the spirit back to us, and we are made more alive through the divine influx that follows our recognition.

Today I am resolved to see the Spirit in everything; therefore, today I know that my own spirit is quickened.  I know that there is an inner Presence in everything I will contact and that will respond to me.  I know that everything is alive, awake, and aware with this Presence; that in all the changing scenes of my experience I will be contacting this one Presence.  Threfore, I go forth to meet the Divine, to enjoy His bounty, and consciously live in His house forevermore.

Spirit is the active and Self-Conscious Principle.
Spirit is
First Cause or God -
the Absolute Essence
 of all that is.
It is the Great or Universal I Am
~  The Science of Mind, P. 81

365 Tao (by Deng MIng-Dao) # 315

Joy

Do your devotions make you happy?
Is your life a joyous song?

In all this talk about spiritual devotion, there is one simple fact.  You have to like it.  It should make you happy.  It is unfortunate that so much coercion, unhappiness, bitterness, guilt,  and fear become wrapped up in spirituality.  Why can't we simply do things out of joy?

Practicing spirituality isn't a matter of drudgery.  It isn't a matter of fear.  It isn't for fitting into a social group.  It has nothing to do with status.  Being devoted to holiness in your life is a matter of joy and celebration.  When you sit down to meditate; a smile should come to your lips and a feeling of joy should permeate your body.  When you go to consecrated ground to give thanks and celebrate, you should do so not because of the day of the week or out of the habit of ritual, but because this is the best way that you know how to adore your gods and express the wonder of being on this earth.

Yes, yes, there is much unhappiness in this existence.  That unhappiness is part of the overall field of negativity.  There are also positive things in life, and spirituality is foremost among them.  So whenever we practice our spiritual devotions, let it be in gladness and joy.

UNIVERSAL SERVICE

I don't know what your destiny will be, but one thing I do know; the only ones among you who will be really happy are those who have sought and found how to serve.
Albert Schweitzer

…there is an Infinite Law of the Spirit which tends to multiply our gifts, because in so doing It multiplies Its own experience.
The Science of Mind, page 270

TO serve is to experience the multiplication of our gifts.  We may know how we want to serve or we may support the efforts of others until we find our niche.  Perhaps the most exciting service is to be open to the promptings of Spirit that lead us into new situations like the one I had with a woman I met on a college campus.

During our exchange of small talk, she mentioned that she had some reservations about a church she had recently joined because they didn't teach a certain religious principle that she believed in.  I was familiar with the principle and shared with her what I knew about its history.  At the end of our discussion she felt more confident that she could study independently the principles that she held dear and continue to attend church.  I never met her again.

I thought about how unusual this encounter was.  Spirit always leads us to our answers.  I merely served as her “mailbox” for her message from the Universe.  When we know we “work for God,” every encounter is an opportunity to serve.  We may pray for someone, offer physical or emotional support, or become the mailbox where someone receives their next message from the Universe.

affirmation

Today, I open myself in service to the Universe.  I am aware of the many opportunities that Spirit gives me to serve others.  My service is in love and joy.

A Year With Rumi by Coleman Barks

The Taste of Morning

Time's knife slides from the sheath,
as a fish from where it swims.

Being closer and closer is the desire
of the body.  Don't wish for union.

There is a closeness beyond that.
Why would God want a second God?

Fall in love in such a way
that it frees you from any connecting.

Love is the soul's light, the taste of morning,
no me, no we, no claim of being.

These words are the smoke the fire gives off
as it absolves its defects,
as eyes in silence, tears, face.

Love cannot be said.

Science of Mind Text p. 316.3 - 317.2

Unlike the physician who must diagnose the disease and work with it, the metaphysician turns entirely away from the disease in his thought. Disease - whether they be mumps, measles, poverty or unhappiness - all are wrong adjustments to life; this is what disease is. Lack of ease. The mental and spiritual practitioner must turn completely from the condition, as it is, and MUST CONTEMPLATE IT AS IT OUGHT TO BE…never as it appears to be.

And he has a technique for this, a method of procedure. He has a way in which he thinks. He starts with the premise that God is perfect, the Spiritual System is perfect, man is a part of this Spiritual System, therefore, the spiritual man is perfect, and that disease cannot attach itself to this spiritual man. If he were dealing directly with disease, poverty or unhappiness, he would be caught in its mental vibration. We should seek to disentangle our imagination from the material man and join it with our contemplation of the spiritual man. THE SPIRITUAL MAN IS PERFECT. The spiritual man is continuously remolding and remaking the material or physical man.

In the natural process of evolution, what we call time elapses - one day, one week, one month, one year - but in Spirit there is no time. The Spirit is Timeless. Therefore, the mental and spiritual practitioner must not deal with time, he must transcend time. Not only must he transcend time, but he must resolutely turn away from any form of limitation. God is not limited by any form. He turns to the Formless, for out of this a new form shall come.

Kabbalah 365 - Daily Fruit from the Tree of Life
by Gershon Winkler

Day 315

When the vision-bringer and the shaman encounter the spirit realm, they begin to weaken in their body selves.  They shift their form, both spiritual and physical, shape-shifting until they become completely garbed in the form that is channeled to them, ultimately taking on the very form of the spirit that comes to them.  It is this spirit form that enables them to then translate the vision or prophetic influx from the spirit realm.  This spirit also becomes deeply manifested in their hearts in a spiritual sense so that its image takes the form of a visual experience for them.  When the communication of the spirit is complete, the shamans are restored shape by shape to their original form and all their bodily powers return to their original state.  It is only thereafter that the vision-bringer can speak the visions to the people in normal human language.

- Thirteenth-century Rabbi Yitzchak HaKohain of Soria,
quote in Avo-dat HaKo'desh
by sixteenth-century Rabbi Me'ir ibn Gabbai

Service
I thank God for those who dedicate their lives to service.

Through the ages, people have stepped forward and served to make their communities, their homelands and the world a better, safer place. I am in awe of the courage and dedication they have shown. Their sacrifices bless us all.

I deeply appreciate the contribution of those who serve humanity. As part of our world family, I also do my part to promote a better life for all.

My prayers are one way to contribute to the betterment of humankind. Today I take time to honor and bless those who have committed their lives to courageous sacrifice and service to others. I give thanks for them and the significant difference they make in our world.

Serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul.–Deuteronomy 10:12
