Came across an interesting series of audio recordings on NLP. They seem to be free and surprisingly no advertising or marketing of any services, just pure content. Found some of the ideas to be rather intriguing, though do not agree with everything the speakers have to say, never the less its a great resourse esp. at the price.

look at it if you are interested www.radicalchangegroup.com

Chaos

I'm almost done with Poole's book. It is awesome. If you like Orwell or Chomsky, you'll love Poole. Yet, Pool is not pushing any political agenda. He simply strips all powebrokers of whatever political stripe fo their attempts to hide behind language.

I just picked up a copy of "Unspeak: How Words Become Weapons, How Weapons become a Message, and How that Message becomes Reality" by Stephen Poole. I haven;t started it yet, but it looks great. Has anyone read it? What did you think?

Thanks

I was surfing around today and found this:

http://www.squidoo.com/linguistics/

Squidoo uses "lenses" (I think that means a set of search terms) to pull information from all kinds of sources: web search, Flicker, blogs, Amazon, RSS feeds, and more. It displays all the results on one page, nicely bundled and organized. Neeto.

Anyway, they have definitions there for five types of linguistics. Cool!

by Richard Bandler and John Grinder

I found this book to be very helpful in understanding the meaning-functions of language (as opposed to the functional parts of language like noun, verb, etc.). Based in research in linguistics, hypnosis, computer software and psychotherapy, the authors analyze the specific language that famously effective therapists (Virginia Satir, Gregory Bateson, and Milton H. Erickson, M.D.) used and why it works. They discovered some amazing things about how the mind processes language and how language can influence and shift the perception grids (my own term) operating in people.

Expect it to be a bit dense, this isn't a one-sitting read. I think it took me several months to read it the first time, and I probably only understood about half of it then. Several readings later, the concepts have become much more understandable and even more exciting.

To a hobbiest or student linguist, this book is worth its weight in gold.

Cheers,

I would highly recommend the following books:
George Lakoff & Mark Johnson: Metaphors We Live By (1980, New Afterword 2003) and Philosophy in The Flesh: The Embodied Mind and its Challenge to Western Thought (1999)

Excellent books exploring how the mind works and thus how it uses language.

If you are interested in how language connects with the body, mind, and spirit, this book should be on your shelf. This book is more than just a modern take on 'mind over body' and it is far beyond simple affirmations: it is a strong introduction into Somatics (whole-body health and sensibilities) and a grounded exploration of the power of language to affect, create and manage our moods, our perceptions, and our stories.

With a forward by Dr. Patch Adams, M.D., this book is co-authored by Matthew Budd, M.D. and Larry Rothstein, Ed.D. Budd's influences and teachers include Humerto Maturana, Fernando Flores, and Richard S. Heckler, Ph.D. These are teachers who go beyond philosophy and words; they have all translated their work and ontologies into action, motion, and emotion. They are more than talking about transformation and stories, they do and teach how to transform ourselves and shift our stories.

In my opinion, this book is a must-have for modern American linguists. It is fresh in the field (published in 2000 by Crown Publishers, New York), and opens the path for language sensibilities in the 21st century. For example, this book has actual body-linguistic exercises (intentional physical motions) to connect you with yourself and the deeper concepts presented. It is a terrific base for creating and expanding Integral Life Practices (ref. Wilber) that are custom-fit and laser-focused effective.

Disclosure: I have no connections with and receive no compensation from the authors, publishers, or distributors of this book; and while I am not in the employ of anyone involved in this book, I was a student of Dr. Richard S. Heckler's over a three-year period.
