Hey there Greg!

Nice to hear from you again. Thanks for the link.

I saw the first glimpse of Lost on a quick promo blurb on TV last night.

Two months to go....

Looking forward to it.

Take care,
mu

Hi fellow Losties (if anyone is still there and reading!)! Been away for awhile, but had to return to let everyone know that although the Season 5 premiere is still two months away (January 21; mark your calendars), ABC just released the first sneak preview, in the form of a new music video by the band The Fray. The video contains moments from last season and the first few peaks ahead (OK, there not much, but still exciting). Here's the link:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mX7md0HoR8E

Back with recaps once they begin....

Greg

Yes! Very well said. Thanks once again for your very insightful comments about the show. You also reminded me three are two more seasons (for some reason I thought there was only one more season!) So, that is a nice surprise.

I agree; the show is great. One of my all-time favorites (even though I'm not a huge TV watcher person). But, I like 4400 as well and a couple from the past. LOST, I have to admit, may ultimately be the best on TV in my opinion.

I'm always impressed (and wonder about) the story line and how it comes together each year. Wondering if they had it all mapped out ahead of time, or if they have tweaked it as time and plot moves forward etc. They have definitely hit on a winning combination of elements - just look at all the crazy fans! ;-)

Take care,
mu

Stunned. I remember a year ago, during the final ten minutes of Lost's Season 3 finale, being just blown away/stunned at the mother of all narrative twists: the revelation that our island friends (or at least some of them) HAD indeed made it off the island and that half of the episode that I had just watched was set in the "future", island-time-wise. That special Jack and Kate moment changed the course of the show and set the tone for fantastic Season 4, a season that I think reaffirmed the show's status as the most entertaining and thought-provoking program on television both current and maybe of all-time!

So despite the fantastic string of episodes that preceded it and the two-week hype, I knew there was the possibility that this year's finale would be a "good not great" episode that would fail (if only slightly) to live up to the massive hype and the emotional resonance of last year's capper. And for me, that's how basically how it played out. There were MANY great/interesting/educational moments: Locke's ascent to lead the Others, Ben's descent into the ice cave/time machine and ultimately "moving" the island (presumably in time vs. space), Jin and Michael being left behind on the doomed freighter, and the final revelation that the "Oceanic 6" ALL had to return to the island, along with the reveal of the identity of one "Jeremy Bentham" (the man in the coffin from last season's finale). All great moments, but in retrospect I guess there can probably only be one truly "game-changing" moment like last season's in the course of a show's history. Nonetheless, a GREAT season, and hopefully a prelude to more greatness in the final two seasons that remain!

For the usual great FULL recap of the episode, check out old friend Doc Jenson's EW.com review:

http://www.ew.com/ew/article/0,,20203291,00.html

And since I never got around to posting the recap for Episode 12 (a decent and emotionally necessary "bridge" episode to the finale), here is a link in case anyone is interested:

http://www.ew.com/ew/article/0,,20200751,00.html

WOW! If you're like me, you finished watching episode 11 and thought, "we might never see a television show this dense, head-scratching, or brilliant ever again!" To quote Doc Jensen:

"Last night was for us. The cultists. The obsessives. The crazies who have committed to this long, strange trip and gotten lost in it. Like the candy bar Hurley generously shared with Ben while Locke was chatting with the spectral squatters inside Jacob's shack (a nod to the Neo-Oracle-cookie scene in The Matrix?), ''Cabin Fever'' was an episode packed with a chunky abundance of brain-fattening cryptonuggets to nourish our fevered theory making and message-board blustering. Comic-book references. Biblical allusions. Mythological connections. Double meanings to scores of lines. I loved Hurley's ''theory'' that he, Ben, and Locke were chosen for this vision quest because they were the craziest ones on the Island. This in an episode whose '50s-set flashbacks evoked, fittingly, AMC's Mad Men and whose thematic concern with fate mirrors that of No Country for Old Men, a narrative about three men dangling on sanity's thread, though at different points. Amid the clues, red herrings, and tomfoolery, I saw in the episode a fiendishly clever love letter to those of us who've become so locked up inside Lost that they've been somewhat deliriously messed up by it. That's really why they called it ''Cabin Fever.'' Just my theory, but who knows? Maybe I'm just seeing things again. "

To read Jensen's full review on EW. com, click here:

http://www.ew.com/ew/article/0,,20198844,00.html

Lost continued its post return-from-strike roll with a Jack and Kate-centric episode that both raised the hopes of those wanting a fairy tale ending for their on-again/off-again romance and then spiraled downhill in a major way. With several subtle and not-so subtle Alice in Wonderland references, Ep. 10 again raised as many new questions as it answered old ones. Will we ever see a show this dense/brilliant again?

For another complete recap, care of EW's resident Lost-ologist Doc Jensen, see:

http://www.ew.com/ew/article/0,,20197443,00.html

Lost resumed its season, post-strike break, with a dense, action-packed episode called "the Shape of Things To Come," the title of a famous HG Wells book and later movie. Covering everything from the tragic loss of Ben's daughter while he attempted to bluff his way out of the situation (with Ben's sure-to-be relevant "He's changed the rules" quote), to Miles finally admitting to Jack and his beachies that the freighter folk were indeed not there to rescue them, to Ben showing up in Algeria wearing a heavy parka (more time/space travel?), and a late-night confrontation in a London hotel room between Ben and Charles Widmore about the island and their roles concerning it, there was LOTS going on!

With no room for filler because of the shorter season, I'll leave the more extensive recapping to EW's brilliant Doc Jensen:

http://www.ew.com/ew/article/0,,20195369,00.html

Entitled "Meet Kevin Johnson", Episode 8 presented us with the "backstory" of Johnson, a role that Michael (in a great, nuanced performance by Harold Perrineau) assumed on the freighter in his new job working for Benjamin Linus! After escaping the island and racked by guilt from having killed two people while there and supposedly telling Walt, Michael attempts to kill himself several times only to find out that the island "won't let him die" (in the worlds of Other Tom/"Mr. Friendly," who clearly did not die himself as we were led to believe earlier). Michael is then lured into becoming Ben's "man on the boat" and the majority of the episode deals with the how and why of his new mission along with a too-short, cliffhanger-ish ending sequence in which Rousseau, her/Ben's daughter, and boyfriend Carl are ambushed by (insert mystery attacker) while fleeing to a hidden sanctuary that supposedly houses the remaining Others. And we do actually see Walk, via a fleeting glimpse from a window in a clear attempt to disguise how much the actor who plays him has grown since Season 1!

To read a full recap of the episode by EW "guest columnist" Adam B.

The second to last episode in the first "arc" of the season (the second arc will follow the break caused by the writers strike), Ep. 7 was a Sun and Jin-focused hour that most fans likely either loved or hated. A big fan of non-traditional/non-linear narrative, I loved the twist, in which we were led to believe that both Sun and Jin had made it off the island and were awaiting the birth of their child. Of course, this was extremely problematic in that if both of them had indeed made it off the island, that would have been seven despite the fact that we keep hearing about the "Oceanic Six," so the mind raced with various scenarios on how that could be! I personally didn't see the twist coming, which wasn't revealed until the end, and I welcome additional episodes with similar twists.

The other major "wow" moment came with the reappearance of former Lostie Michael, which could have been huge, but many fans (including myself) saw it coming a mile away. Last summer, producers Cuse and Lindelof basically told the crowd at ComicCon in San Diego that Harold Perrineau (who plays Michael) was coming back to the show this year, and Ben's cryptic "I have a man on the boat" comment a few episodes back certainly pointed in that direction.

The other major plot point came when the captain of the freighter told Sayid and Desmond that Charles Whidmore (Penelope's father) was the one who had commissioned the ship and the search for the island and gave them details about the faked wreckage previously reported to the world!

For more a in-depth recap, here are two good blogs this week: my usual Doc Jensen piece from EW.com and some additional interesting insights from Zap2It.com:

http://www.ew.com/ew/article/0,,20184253,00.html

http://blog.zap2it.com/ithappenedlastnight/2008/03/lost-and-baby-m.html

Maybe they are counting baby Aaron... I dunno!
And doe the Oceanic Six mean that only six of them 'return' or that six of them are infamous for something or other?
mu

I didn't think they would count baby Aaron, so that would leave one more if it is indeed "six" people.

Yeah, I thought about that time travel Walt/Michael thing too.

I love a good mystery. :-)

mu

      Hi Mu!

Have you watched this week's episode yet? (if not, this don't read any further! But I assume you have since you reference the return of Michael)

One of the things that perplexed me during the episode was trying to determine who exactly were the "Oceanic 6", since we already knew that Jack, Kate, Hurley, Sayid, and baby Aaron would have been five ID'ed so far! Not knowing about the crazy/inventive Sun & Jin backwards/forwards double narrative, I kept thinking, well that makes seven or that maybe they weren't counting the baby since he wasn't technically alive when Oceanic 815 crashed. (and on the passenger manifest). Or "Wow, I have no clue what's actually going on here!" (a frequent thought while watching Lost!)

Of course, now that we know the narrative twist, it all works out! And unfortunatley I saw the Michael appearance a mile away what with Ben's earlier comment of "I have a man on the boat" and having learned at ComicCon last summer from the producers that Harold P (who plays Michael) was coming back to the show this year.

Have no clue about Walt! (apparently some people have emailed EW's Doc Jensen with the theory that that isn't Micaeal but a time-traveled, grown-up Walt! Now THAT would be wild.

Good stuff indeed. I'll post this week's recap in a bit...

Take care,

Greg

      Thanks Greg!

I really appreciate your recaps and posts here.

So, are we to assume there are only two others who will make it 'off the island' then?

I had just been thinking that 'Michael' would have to make a return appearance soon - and voila! :)

Wonder about Walt....

Thanks again,
mu

OK, so life caught up to me (and my time on Gaia) the past few weeks and I realize I've been negligent in posting my episode recaps in case anyone is still reading them!

SO... Episode 5 (the Desmond-centric time travel episode) was exactly the sort of blowout experience which makes Lost (for me anyway) the best and most thought-provoking show on t.v. since the X-Files in its early heyday. Trying to explain the plot, which involved D's consciousness (not his actual body) traveling back and forth between present-day island time (2004) and 1996 would make my head explode, but I'll leave it to the expert, aka EW's Jeff Jenson to do that here. Note that the piece includes a few fun morsels from Producer/Genius Carlton Cuse:

http://www.ew.com/ew/article/0,,20182393,00.html

As for Episode 6, I was quite excited to hear beforehand that it was more of Juliette's backstory (for me, each Juliette-focused episode to date has been excellent). Until the actual episode ran, which was I thought forced and easily the weakest one to date this season, despite some crucial plot move-alongs and one more LARGE reveal (involving Penelope's father Charles Widmore). So a stumble, yes, but great things potentially in store still for the remainder of this season. For the Episode 6 recap, go here:

http://www.ew.com/ew/article/0,,20182755,00.html
