LOVE

"Put love first. Entertain thoughts that give life and
when a thought of resentment, or hurt, or fear comes
your way, have another thought that is more powerful
-- a thought that is love."

                          Mary Manin Morrissey

"For one human being to love another: that is perhaps
the most difficult of our tasks; the ultimate, the
last test and proof, the work for which all other work
is but preparation."

                            Rainer Maria Rilke

"If you judge people, you have no time to love them."

                               Mother Teresa

"Age does not protect you from love. But love, to some
  extent, protects you from age."

                               Jeanne Moreau

                                      LOVE

"One of the great illusions of our time is that love
is self-seeking. It is not. Love must be fed and
nurtured, constantly renewed. That demands ingenuity
and consideration, but first and foremost, it demands
time."

                              David R. Mace
                       Counselor and writer

"We love because it's the only true adventure."

                            Nikki Giovanni
                        Poet and essayist

LOVE, DEVOTION, SURRENDER

Love is sweet, devotion is sweeter, surrender is
sweetest.

Love is sweet. I have felt this truth in my mother's
spontaneous love for me.
Devotion is sweeter. I have discovered this truth in
my mother's pure devotion towards the perfection of my
life.
Surrender is sweetest. I have realised this truth in
my mother's constant surrender towards the fulfilment
of my joy.

Again, love is mighty, devotion is mightier,
surrender is mightiest.

Love is mighty. This truth I feel when I look at my
father's face.
Devotion is mightier. This truth I discover when I
sit at my father's feet.
Surrender is mightiest. This truth I realise when I
live in the breath of my father's will.

Love, devotion and surrender. St. Augustine has
blessed us with a profound message: "Love and then do
what you like."
Our mind thinks that this is absolutely true. Our
heart feels that this is undeniably true. But
unfortunately in our day-to-day life we are not able
to practise it. That is to say, we do not know what
love is. We do not know why we love something or
someone. Finally, we do not know how to love.
What is love? From the spiritual and inner point of
view, love is self-expansion. Human love binds and is
bound. Divine Love expands and enlarges itself. Here
we are dealing with Divine Love.
Devotion is the intensity in love, and surrender is
the fulfilment of love. Why do we love? We love
because at every moment we are pinched with hunger to
realise the highest, to feel the inmost, to be
consciously one with the universe; with the universal
Truth, Light, Peace and Bliss, and to be completely
fulfilled.
How to love? If we love with a view to achieving
something from others, then our love is no love. Love
means constant self-offering on the strength of our
own inner aspiration.
This world of ours needs peace, joy, bliss, harmony
and understanding. We feel that here on earth there is
no light, no truth, no divinity - nothing of the sort.
All the divine qualities, all aspects of the Lord
Supreme, are in the skies, in the deep blue skies, not
here. This is what we feel. Hence we always look up
high for help. We feel that God is in heaven, not on
earth. To rescue us, God will come down into the
world. He is not to be found here on earth. Here we
are wallowing in the pleasures of ignorance. There can
be no light, no truth here.
But we must realise that God, being Omnipresent, is
here too. He is within us. He is also without. In the
inmost recesses of our heart, we feel His living
Presence.
As you all know, George Bernard Shaw has warned us,
"Beware of the man whose God is in the skies." But our
God is everywhere. He is not only in heaven, He is
also here on earth. He is with us, He is within us and
He is for us. We do not have to enter the highest
regions of consciousness to see God. Our inner cry
will bring to the fore our inner divinity, which is
nothing other than God.
Surrender. Surrender is protection and surrender is
illumination. Surrender is our perfection. We begin
our journey at the very commencement of our life. We
surrender our existence to our parents and get, in
return, protection. We listen to our parents. We
surrender to their will, to their advice and
suggestions, and we are protected, well protected. Joy
boundless we feel in our day-to-day life when we are
children. Why? Because we surrender our personal will,
our own inner thinking, to our parents, and
immediately we receive joy plus protection. In
protection is joy, and in joy is protection.
Now in the evening of our life, what happens? If we
follow the inner life and the spiritual life, in the
evening of our life we also surrender. To whom? To the
Inner Pilot, the Lord Supreme. At the end of our
journey we surrender our very breath to the Supreme.
Then we again get joy, perfect joy, unalloyed joy.
To quote Dante, "The happiest man is he who can
connect the evening of his life with the beginning."
Now, if we are all sincere seekers of the ultimate
Truth, then our journey begins with surrender to our
parents, who are our well-wishers, our dearest and
nearest ones. When we surrender our existence to them,
we get joy in abundant measure. Then, when we walk
along the path of spirituality, at every moment we try
to listen to the dictates of our inner being. The more
we listen to our inner being, the greater is our joy,
and the higher our fulfilment. And then, when our term
is over, when we have to enter into another world for
a short rest, if we consciously surrender to God's
Will, ours will be the supreme joy, the glory supreme.
It is difficult to love mankind. It is difficult to
devote ourselves to mankind. It is difficult to
surrender ourselves to mankind. This is true. In the
same way, it is difficult to love God, to serve God,
to devote ourselves to God and to surrender our living
breath to God.
Now, why? The simple reason is that we want to
possess and be possessed. We are constantly making
ourselves victims of ignorance. That is to say, our
desires can never be fulfilled. We have countless
desires. God will fulfil only those desires that will
be of some use, from which we will derive benefit. If
He were to fulfil our countless desires, then He would
be doing an injustice to our aspiring souls. That He
will not do. He knows what is best for us and He has
given us beyond our capacity, though unfortunately we
are unaware of this.
St. Francis, from his own experience, has offered a
unique truth to the world at large: "He who thinks
that God's Love is inadequate is very greedy." We are
all really greedy people. If we go deep within, we
see, we feel, we realise that God has given us
infinitely more than we need and, needless to say,
more than we deserve.
Love, devotion and surrender. These are the three
rungs in the spiritual ladder, or should we say, the
ladder of our evolving consciousness. The first rung
is love; the second, or penultimate, is devotion; and
the ultimate is surrender.
A tiny drop enters into the ocean and becomes the
mighty, the boundless ocean. Unfortunately, in the
West surrender is misunderstood. We feel that if we
surrender to someone, he will then lord it over us. We
will have no individuality or personality. From the
ordinary point of view, the human point of view, this
is true. But from the spiritual point of view, it is
absolutely wrong. When the finite enters into the
Infinite, it becomes the Infinite all at once. When a
tiny drop enters into the ocean, we cannot trace the
drop. It becomes the mighty ocean.
Each moment we are given ample opportunity to love
mankind. And if we really love mankind, then we have
the feeling of wanting to offer devoted service to
mankind. And when we really want to enlarge our
existence, expand our consciousness and be one,
inseparably one, with the Vast, then surrender is the
only answer.
Each moment we see right in front of us a barrier
between one human being and another - an adamantine
wall between two people. We cannot communicate
properly, wholeheartedly and soulfully. Why? Because
we are wanting in love. Love is our inseparable
oneness with the rest of the world, with God's entire
Creation. We can break asunder this adamantine wall on
the strength of our soulful love.
India's greatest poet, Rabindranath Tagore, said, "He
who loves finds the door open." So our heart's door is
already open for those who really, truly and soulfully
love.
God loves us out of His Infinite Bounty, and His
Heart's Door is always wide open. Just because He is
all Love, we approach Him. He is our dearest, not
because He is Omniscient and Omnipotent, but just
because He is all Love.

Love, devotion and surrender.

To serve and never be tired is love.
To learn and never be filled is devotion.
To offer and never to end is surrender.

Love is man's reality.
Devotion is man's divinity.
Surrender is man's immortality.

Reality is all-pervading.
Divinity is all-elevating.
Immortality is all-fulfilling.

Sri Chinmoy

American International School
Zurich, Switzerland
November 27, 1970
Copyright 1972 Sri Chinmoy Lighthouse

"For one human being to love another:
that is perhaps the most difficult of
our tasks; the ultimate, the last test
and proof, the work for which all other
         work is but preparation."

                  Rainer Maria Rilke

Love Is Stronger Than Death

Love is stronger than death.
So I must be content to know that
love is not affected by death--
it doesn't end, it doesn't diminish,
it doesn't change.
Instead, love is immortalized
and eternalized through death.
And the possibility of that love ever
being damaged or broken
is eliminated forever.
I'll put my trust in love.

     Mary Hollingsworth

The Love Letter

Dearest,

Do you know how very much in Love with you I am?
How does one fall in Love?
Do you trip?
Do you stumble, loose your balance and drop to the
sidewalk, graze your knee, graze your heart?
Do you crash to the stony ground?
Is there a precipice, from which you float,
over the edge, forever?

I know I'm in Love when I see you,
I know when I long to see you.
Not a muscle has moved.
Leaves hang unruffled by any breeze.
The air is still.
I have fallen in Love without taking a step.
When did this happen?
I havn't even blinked.
I'm on fire. Is that too banal for you?
It's not, you know.
You'll see. It's what happens. It's what matters.
I'm on fire.
I no longer eat, I forget to eat.
Food looks silly to me, irrelevant.
If I even notice it. But I notice nothing.
My thoughts are full and raging, a house full of
brothers, related by blood, fueding blood fueds:

"I'm in Love."
"Typically stupid choice."
"I am, though, I'm racked by Love as if Love were
pain."
"Go ahead, Fuck up your life. It's all wrong and you
know it. Wake up. Face it."
"There's only one face, it's all I see,
awake or asleep."

I threw the book out the window last night.
I tried to forget.
You are wrong for me, I know it, but I no longer care
for my thoughts unless they're thoughts of you.

When I'm close to you, in your presence, I feel your
hair brush my cheek when it does not.
I look away from you, sometimes. Then I look back.

When I tie my shoes, when I peel an orange, when I
drive my car, when I lie down each night without you,
I remain,

Yours

    (c) 1995 by Cathleen Schine
from her book 'The Love Letter'

Being a 'Hopeless Romantic', I am one of those rare men who actually love sappy sentimental movies about 'Love and Romance'. Most men call them 'Chick Flicks' or 'Date Movies'.

Anyway, I went and saw one last night that totally blew me away and wanted to give anyone interested out there a heads up on it, without giving anything away about the movie itself.

It totally took me by surprise, was much more than I ever expected, and was so very different than what I had expected. It was such a beautiful wonderful surprise. It was of course a very romantic love story, which I didn't know for sure when I went to it that it was even a love story, I just love the chemistry between the two actors was why I went, and it even had elements of 'time travel' in it.

It stars Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock, and it is called "The Lake House", and I Highly Recommend it to anyone who likes these types of movies. If you decide and go see it, or have already seen it, be sure and email me or post your thoughts here, and let me know what you thought about it.

With Love in the One,

Mickey

"The Princess Grows Up"

As a child, her world was taken away.
No one asked her if she was ok.

Guilt, shame and lonliness covered her soul.
Going thru life blindly, and out of control.

One day she found Truth, and was able to speak.
Pouring from her heart, the dark and the bleek.

Uncovering the gold that lay within.
She shared more than ever, shared it with him.

She's not caught up in the moment,
she's caught in the dream she had as a girl.

Still believing in happy endings
and taking back her own world.

No more fear of the pain or the darkness once known.
Knowing that only she holds the key to her future, her throne.
Her reign is from confidence that she alone knows.
Not from the past ..... and not from her foes.

Able to move forward, to the future, now clear.
Unfettered by the fastens that used to hold dear.

Rising above .... soaring high on her wings.
She captures her dream, but loses her king.

Love
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Love is a condition or phenomenon of emotional primacy, or absolute value. Love generally includes an emotion of intense attraction to either another person, a place, or thing; and may also include the aspect of caring for or finding identification with those objects, including self-love. Love can describe an intense feeling of affection, an emotion or an emotional state. In ordinary use, it usually refers to interpersonal love, an experience usually felt by a person for another person. Love is commonly considered impossible to define.

The concept of love, however, is subject to debate. Some deny the existence of love, calling it a recently invented abstraction. Moreover, approximately 13 percent of cultures reportedly have no word for love.[1] Others maintain that love exists but is indefinable; being a quantity which is spiritual, metaphysical, or philosophical in nature. Love is one of the most common themes in art. An unfinished debate about the authenticity of love as other-regard began with Friedrich Nietzsche's charge that love is merely an ideology constructed by the weak to mask "resentment" about their lack of power. Critics of Nietzsche's view find gratuitous his assumptions that self-interest and the "will to power" overshadow all other concerns.

Overview:
Love has several different meanings in the English language, from something that gives a little pleasure to something that one would die for. And in contrast to the definition at the top, frequently people use the verb "love" to indicate want or desire for themselves as opposed to for another. For example: "I love ice cream," does not refer to desiring wellness for ice cream, but rather to the desire for ice cream. The word also frequently indicates elevated appreciation or admiration: "I love that artist," Laura stated.

Cultural differences make any universal definition of love difficult to establish. Expressions of love may include the love for a soul or mind, the love of laws and organizations, love for a body, love for nature, love of food, love of money, love for learning, love of power, love of fame, and love for the respect of others. Different people place varying degrees of importance on the kinds of love they receive. Love is essentially an abstract concept, easier to experience than to explain. Many believe, as stated originally by Virgil, that "Love conquers all", or as stated by The Beatles, "all you need is love". Bertrand Russell describes love as a condition of 'absolute value', as opposed to 'relative value'.

Types:
Courtly love - a late medieval conventionalized code prescribing certain conduct and emotions for ladies and their lovers.
Erotic love - desire characterized by sexual desires.
Familial love - affection brokered through kinship connections, intertwined with concepts of attachment and bonding.
Free love - sexual relations according to choice and unrestricted by marriage.
Platonic love - a close relationship in which sexual desire is nonexistent or has been suppressed or sublimated.
Puppy love - romantic affection that is not "mature" or not "true". The term reflects a bias that love between youngsters is somehow less valid.
Religious love - devotion to one's deity or theology.
Romantic love - affection characterized by a mix of emotional and sexual desire.
Unrequited love - affection and desire not reciprocated or returned.

Scientific views:
Throughout history, predominantly, philosophy and religion have speculated the most into the phenomenon of love. In the last century, the science of psychology has written a great deal on the subject. Recently, however, the sciences of evolutionary psychology, evolutionary biology, anthropology, neuroscience, and biology have begun to take centre stage in discussion as to the nature and function of love.

Biological models of sex tend to see it as a mammalian drive, just like hunger or thirst. Psychology sees love as more of a social and cultural phenomenon. Psychologist Robert Sternberg explains that love has three different components. Intimacy is a form where two people can share secrets and various details of their personal life. Intimacy is usually shown in friendships and romantic love affairs. Commitment on the other hand is the expectation that the relationship is going to last forever. The last and most common form of love is simply sex, or passion. Passionate love is shown in infatuation as well as romantic love.

Cultural views:
Although there exist numerous cross-cultural unified similarities as to the nature and definition of love, as in there being a thread of commitment, tenderness, and passion common to all human existence, there are differences. For example, in India, with arranged marriages commonplace, it is believed that love is not a necessary ingredient in the initial stages of marriage - it is something that can be created during the marriage; whereas in Western culture, by comparison, love is seen as a necessary prerequisite to marriage.

Religious views:
Whether religious love can be expressed in similar terms to interpersonal love is a matter for philosophical debate. Religious love might be considered a euphemism, more closely describing feelings of deference. Religions may use the term love to express the devotion of a follower to a deity, who may be a living guru or religious teacher, as in the Bhakti traditions of Asia. This love may be expressed by prayer, service, good deeds, and personal sacrifice. Some traditions encourage the development of passionate love in the believer for the deity.

Reciprocally, many eutheistic followers may believe that deity loves the followers and all of creation. Many believe that this type of love that God has for all of creation, often defined as charity, is an unconditional and ultimate, or infinite, form of love.

Definitional issues:
Dictionaries tend to define love as deep affection or fondness.
[2] In colloquial use, according to polled opinion, the most favoured definitions of love include the words:
[3] life - someone or something for which you would give your life.
care - someone or something about which you care more than yourself.
In common use, care refers to a mental or emotional state of predisposition in which one has an interest or concern for someone or something. To care for someone, may also refer to a disquieted state of mixed uncertainty, apprehension, and responsibility; or a cause for such anxiety. Caring for an object, such as a house, refers to a state of attendant maintenance; or may also refer to a state of charge or supervision, as in under a doctor's care.
friendship - favoured interpersonal associations or relationships.
union
family - people related via common ancestry.
bond.
