The Mayan calendar depends on an entirely radical system. It is not possible to claim that it just explains the astrological patterns with a different language. The patterns of the Mayan calendar are radically different from what the Babylonian Astrology suggests to us. The Mayan calendar is the only calendar system that is not based on the physical/astronomical cycles. It rather explains the evolution of consciousness, depending on the spiritual energies of the cosmos. These patterns are there from the beginning of the Universe, and much before our solar system was born. The philosophy here is that the material bodies (planets, sun, and moon) are not adequate to explain the spiritual evolution. Because the spiritual evolution follows, the shifts of the spiritual energies and these are explained by the Mayan calendar. A strong supporting argument here could be that, even the Mayans were extremely improved in Astronomy and Mathematics, their most important calendar system (Tzolkin) is not based on astronomical cycles (except for “kin” which is a day). Rather, it is developed through shamanic trance experiences, connecting with the divine inspiration. Another radical point that clearly differentiates the Mayan calendar from the Babylonian Astrology is that it requires insight at the first place. While for the Babylonian Astrology the first observation is from the inside looking out, Mayan calendar requires looking inside from the outside. What do I mean? For the Babylonian Astrology the outside objects, such as planets, the sun, and the moon influence our consciousness. However, for the Mayan calendar it is the World and the World tree, which is the main resonant channel that brings about the evolution of consciousness.
At this point perhaps I also need to focus on the aspect of the Mayan calendar that it is holographic. “So above as below.” World has a holographic resonance with the human mind, which is explained by the Mayas by the World Tree cosmology. World tree is a cosmic energy antenna that receives the pulses of cosmic energies and broadcast them for the human brain. This is how the evolution of consciousness is stepping forward. Well where these energies come from, one might ask. The world tree, is in resonance with the Galactic tree of life, which, is in resonance with the Cosmic tree of life. This Cosmic Tree of life is also called the Hunab-Ku (meaning “One God”) and is the source of all consciousness that is being manifested through entire universe. Our Galactic tree of life is both in a receiver and in a giver position, connected with the World Tree. Our world tree is, as I said, in the same position of receiving and giving and in resonance with each of us. Every human being is also having an individual tree of life that receives the energies of the cosmos. Furthermore, all of these “life trees” resonate simultaneously. “As above so below.” In other words, Hunab-Ku is inside each of us. I explain this as “cosmos is inside us”, or “in each of us there is an individual cosmos”. In the end, it comes to the point that I can say, “I am the Cosmos”, or “I am the source of the evolution of consciousness”. This is what all of the enlightened beings say: “Cosmos is in me”, or in Sufism it is mentioned as “Cosmos is created in the Adam (Human).” Coming back to my point, Mayan calendar is suggesting us an insight rather than being dependent on the outside objects. I think this is the most crucial point concerning astrology. As we believe that we are one with God, and God is manifesting his plan through us, then we can have the freedom to live a more divinely inspired life. I think when the classical astrological view is transformed into a perspective like this it will be a wide step in the name of evolution. I want to conclude this, by quoting from a wonderful being who lived on this planet, The Mother. As being the first mystics, with Sri Aurobindo, to talk about a new age and evolution of a new human species, hear what she is saying: “Horoscopes have no importance for those who take up yoga, because the influence that works through yoga is much powerful than the influence of the stars.”
