One of the most fun things about Second Life, for me, is the fact that there's an entire programming language you can use to create things in Second Life - LSL, the Linden Scripting Language. It's surprisingly powerful, and can even interact with external websites.

Someday I hope to learn how to create such things myself. I will probably use the PHP programming language and MySQL (a type of database software frequently used on websites) on the external website. I already know a little LSL, PHP and MySQL, but haven't begun working on such a project yet. I expect it will be a fun and interesting challenge.

Here are a few existing websites which interact with things in-world. Two shopping websites:

SLExchange - http://slexchange.com/

OnRez - http://shop.onrez.com/

And here's a website (which I think mainly features a forum) which you can only register for from within Second Life:

SecondLife Drama - http://sldrama.com/

Those are actually the only websites I know of off-hand which directly interact with scripts in Second Life, but, if I run into any more, I'll post them. And, needless to say, everyone is welcome to add to this thread. :-)
