Deann Hall, whose handmade furniture company is actually called Birdland, is definitely a Rare Bird!

A gifted woodworker, furniture artist and painter, Deann moved to Taos, New Mexico, in 1974, when she was 22--having hitchhiked there with a friend while on school break. She immediately knew Taos was her place in the world, went back to school, packed her truck--a 1960 3/4-ton Chevy Apache she bought for a song from a pest control company then transformed into a camper--and spent three months camping in New Mexico's canyons before finding a house.

Feminism was a new idea at that point, and wave after wave of "disoriented, confused but determined" women began washing up on the high-desert sands of Taos. In Deann's words, "We weren't sure exactly what we wanted, but we knew it was going to be different." One summer everyone who came was from California, then the next year Texas, then Illinois. Deann arrived from San Diego, though her state of origin was Utah. The common denominator among these women from many different places was that they were all looking for new and empowering options for living.

Soon Deann got what she wanted--a job in the woodworking field. Previously, she'd studied a semester in a cabinet shop in San Diego--but it was the six years she worked for Gary Walker of Taos that taught her the trade. While mastering her craft, she continued to attend school off and on, responding to a variety of broad interests that included history, communication, art, and linguistics. She also received a teaching certification, but as Deann notes, "One semester of teaching cured me of any thoughts of teaching."

So she went back to construction, finally understanding that self-employment was her path. Still, her desire for learning pushed her to get her Masters in Counseling, then pursue an additional two years to enlist her "awesome" horses into her increasingly popular Equine Assisted Therapy practice. Currently, Deann balances counseling, equine assisted therapy, woodworking, painting, and writing.

Hafiz writes that "this world is a Magi's brilliant trick, though its affairs are nothing into nothing." To Deann, this suggests that there are no mistakes. We are always learning. Things that are painful actually teach us. Life energy, by its very nature, seeks to expand, so we will never get "it" right. But maybe we will eventually realize that it is the humor, kindness and appreciation that we bring to the process that really counts.

WHY AM I POSTING DANCE MUSIC? THANKS FOR ASKING...:)

About this DANCE ! series of ongoing posts…:) From time to time I get questions as to why I post these DANCE ! items. Here is the answer… Most of us spend much too much time just sitting in front of these hypnotic, seductive, delicious little screens, living that part of our lives which has now become digital, and often, too sedentary. MIllions of years ago we used to spend our days climbing trees and running across the great savannas chasing food and/or mates, or alternatively, running away from our enemies. There was a lot of motion in our lives, and about 99% of the need to move has now been eliminated by the comforts and conveniences of what passes for “civilized” life in the slow lane. Many folks, and maybe you are one of them, do not even have the time to get out to a morning aerobics class: too much time getting there and back, roads too icy, too much snow, too hot, waiTing for calls, and ______________________________? So I decided some long time back to put all this digital goodness to even higher service than community-building, sharing, creating, and generally going global in so many ways. I discovered that in fact, my GAIA Blog could serve yet another happy opportunity optimizing function: My Blog can become a music player !!!! And I can “program” it with music that makes me want to wake up and bounce, sing, wiggle, leap, mambo,samba,salsa, rock, hustle, twist, and shake the booty ! Yes! And all this for free from our friends at You Tube. So that is why we have Kenny Rogers, and the Rolling Stones, and Bob Marley and Brooks and Dunn, and Tina Turner and these DANCE! interludes. When I am feeling like it is time to get up from my chair and move some, I just find a toon that appeals and let it rip until I have had a good rousing dance break, then, adrenaline up, I go back to work. I realize that I have never actually explained this ! The DANCE! series is just one little corner of the universe where there is some rockin' music to put you back in touch with your body and chase away the “been sitting around here too long blues.” I have given up long ago on “saving the world,” or even changing it. I have modified my aspirations from creating world peace to supporting world sanity. But there is one place over which I have more or less complete control, and it is this space, the one you are looking at now. In this space, I can paint, write, share, dream and………………DANCE!! A Peaceful Solution!

Aloha All!

It's Maui Magic at work again! One of our favorite islanders, Willie Nelson, posted a call for artists everywhere to submit interpretations of his song "A Peaceful Solution." Some friends of mine in a local reggae band called Sirus B took up the challenge and created a beautiful version of Willie's original. When they found out I did little videos for free, they asked me to put together something to go with their adaptation, which was quite a delight since it's such a great song!

Gnaritas Monstrum

This piece is an experiment in storytelling, technique, and visual style. The graphics are 2D, with 3D used only to achieve certain effects. The animation also has a very motion graphics feel, with many quick perspective tricks to transition from one thought to the next. The metaphor becomes clear both from the ending and from translation of the title, but at a wide angle, it is essentially a loss of innocence story. Gnaritas Monstrum was the winner of the of the Graduate Experimental Category in the Greater Philadelphia Student Film Festival.
