The thing that got me motivated the most was getting up every day early, get dressed and put on makeup- even if I had nowhere to go and find someplace to be other than my office or my house

Getting out and meeting people had me talking about my venture and getting other peoplke excited about themselves.

It was a better motivator than coffee (don't get me wrong, coffee rocks!)
What gets you motivated????

Thanks, its good that you are back :)

Another thing that can be added is that usually leaders are born out of circumstances. Real leaders and lead (not just playing the role) are naturally placed in their positions when something needs to be done, provided that in the group all care for each other. The leader doesn't see himself any different from the others, and vice versa.

I think when the leader and lead Choose their positions (and i think current democratic processes today fall in this category) its because they both are looking for personal gain, and not a common benefit or a solution to a problem. Usually the leader seeks power and the lead comfort. Still, circumstances again play a strong role...

Imo when one condition is intended to change into a different one, and more so when the original has prevailed for a long time, there are 2 ways to do it: the first is to destroy the first one and then clean up the mess until the goal is achieved. The second one is to patiently make small and then larger changes, putting pressure without breaking.

Both arrive at the same place, require the same amount of energy, and have the same amount of hardships, sorrow, hope and happiness throughout the process. Which option is taken i guess depends on the general average Character of the group, and Luck. Take care! (you have a shark suit?! cool)

simply awesome boh of you. Just from reading both threads I was enlightened to the leadership in both of you creating a new path for all. I love the way you expressed this in words and motivates me to lead as well. It's been a learning curve for me as I was born and raised not to lead. I see from this its good to follow and lead.

When I left this pod for a bit i had to go fight a battle and did follow the lead at first then carried the torch to help others; but from the leader I chose last week, everything worked out fine. I can take off my shark suit and breath again with my Zaadz buddies.

In all great leaders there is a purpose and intensity which is unmistakable. Plus there is a certain amount of courage required in a leader.

I want to learn to lead better.
Kathy

      youre right.
"Best Manager Without Being Present to Manage", thats a good one :)

although i think there is a difference between a leader and a manager;

a manager is there to help and assure that certain pre-defined goals are achieved or reached by "his" people, himself included, and he is usually placed in that position by someone above him (and much more above his group) instead of by a decision by his group. And at the end of the day, he holds complete responsability for the results.

while a leader is there to help the people he "leads" find out what their goals are. he is chosen by them in a natural way, maybe even unnoticed. Usually the best characteristic of a leader is that he Never contradicts himself, thats when people really begin to place their trust on him/her. And the only responsability he has is not to betray them or sell them out.

mho

cheers :)

®

A few years back when I managed a small staff of 5 people we had a little party in which I made up some fun awards for everyone, in turn one of my staffers bestowed on me from the group the "Best Manager Without Being Present to Manage Award".

It was kind of for fun, but also they were being truthful in the fact that I did not get in their way and I let them do their job. I was there to give them advice and support and provide goals for them, but I always wanted them to stretch themselves and also know that I believed they could handle anything that came there way.

I guess I feel this is vital to being a leader. You need to respect the people you lead, give them goals and responsibility, encourage them, reward them and most importantly get out of their way and let them do the work they are good at!

I also always work hard when I am leading somethone at giving them credit and recognizing them, even for the little things and sometimes especially the little things that can make such a big difference.

Leaders also need to be innovative and take chances at new ideas and let people contribute to those ideas or I should say their should be candor in your environment. Listen to your people and let them contribute...don't criticize them for having an idea and don't shut the doors to new ideas...it can cripple a business for many years.

i hope this doesn't sound too harsh or extreme. remember, dont assume :)

Imho, i think a good leader should be someone

. Who teaches by example and always is willing to learn.
. Who isn't looking for anything for himself, and if he does, he does it by himself without involving or compromising others.
. Who doesn't contribute (provide, furnish from the dictionary. Aportar in spanish) to the group with his ideas or goals, he just gives his opinion about theirs.
. Who is only an intermediary between their spokesmen and lets them arrive at agreements by themselves.
. Who appears and disappears at will, so the group learns and has the confidence to take care of themselves. [The Most Important and Urgent matters are those that can always wait. Unless some other group is invading you :( ]
. Who loves, knows personally and shares experiences with everyone in the group.
. Who doesn't care if the group he leads succeeds or fails, because he is only a mirror where they can see reflected in him what they are. And to him success or failure are no longer important.

®

A LEADER IS SOMEBODY WHO CAN ASSUME RESPONSIBILITY FOR HIS SPHERE OF INFLUENCE...

IN THE PRESENCE OF LEADERSHIP, COMMUNICATION IS POSSIBLE....

A LEADER MUST BE ABLE TO GIVE AND RECEIVE COMMUNICATION...

A LEADER MUST HAVE THE ABILITY TO HAVE AFFINITY FOR THE PEOPLE HE IS LEADING.

AND

A LEADER MUST BE ABLE TO INSPIRE SOME AFFINITY IN THEM FOR HIM.

AND

THE GOALS AND THINGS HE STANDS FOR MUST BE QUITE REAL AND THEY MUST BE TO SOME DEGREE OBTAINABLE...

A LEADER MUST BE CABABLE OF A REALITY ON THE PLIGHT OF THE PEOPLE HE IS TRYING TO LEAD.

add to this your take...
Thanks,
Kathy Smith

      Very right Fred.
We need to start small and keep growing.
When one has the desire, patience and intelligence, no matter how the business plan may be, his/her goal will be achieved. It all depends on intelligence, ability to manage people and the ability to put funds to proper use. Most of us are challenged through financial management and that's the biggest hinderance together with managing people that hinder businesses if those two are not properly looked into.
Otherwise nature bows to forces of intelligence and conspires in helping the intelligent achive their dreams.

Thanks for that post.

      Hi Fred,

Thats a great idea. Breaking up the big picture business plan into smaller steps makes the whole journey less overwhelming and allows an opportunity to focus.

I find when I am creating plans that the big picture vision moves so fast I can get overrun with too much to do. My mind moves so much faster than I can get it down. I tend to use this concept moving back and forth with the big picture vision of the plan. It works really well for my work flow and helps me understand what I need to convey to achieve this plan.

As with the excellent tree analogy, when you look back and see what you've grown, ring by ring, all these 2 week plans grow a grand tree.

Here is a concept that I developed recently to help keep my business plan going strong.

The concept starts with a principle that I have had in my mind for a long time

It is easier to take several little steps than to try and take a big leap.

Out of little steps, making progress a little bit at a time, we can make consistent, steady progress towards a larger goal. Just like a tree grows small rings every year, eventually, those rings make up a larger trunk, strong and firmly rooted in its purpose of holding soil in place, providing habitat for organisms, and creating new oxygen. Nature understands the principle and applies it with great success.

We should take cues from mother nature more often. Out of this principle, I developed a short list of progressive tasks which keep my business plan on track and productive. I call it the "Two Week Plan of Attack".

On my "Two Week Plan of Attack" are three tasks that I feel are reachable within two weeks. They all contribute to my business plan.

If you have ever created a business plan, you know what a daunting task it can be. If you are like me, much research is needed to back up the Big Idea so I can secure the funding needed to make it grow into a successful venture.

So, I have three tasks set forth to accomplish over the next two weeks, and by doing this, I have set realistic goals for myself and avoided the intimidation factor that we all feel when working on large projects.

Hope this helps someone,

Fred
