Thank you! In different languages

Meenakshi said Oct 10, 2008, 8:27 PM:

Thank you , Mikey, for starting this board.

If I really had to say Thank you to you in Hindi, I'd say

Dhanyavaad
  धन्यवाद

 I
f Iwas among those who speak Urdu, I”d say:
shukriya  शुक्रिया

And when I talk to my kids, I usually do this, to familiarize them with different languages:

Merci, danke, gracias, thank you, dhanyavaad

Hi Meenakshi,

No, unfortunately, I don't speak all of those languages. :))  I studied Arabic, Tibetan, French, Swedish and Latin (and briefly I studied Hindi, Italian and Spanish but just for a short while) and of the other languages I only know a wee bit. When I travel somewhere I try to learn things like “thank you”, “hi” and “bye”, the numbers etc.

I will be working in Sri Lanka for six months soon so I'm currently looking a bit into (very difficult and new) Singhalese (transcriptions only) and I'm planning on getting a Tamil excercise book, too.

I love languages, they're a big passion of mine. :))

I meant to add a reply to your post here that I forgot when I posted yesterday: I think it's great that you use some simple words such as “thank you” in different languages around your kids. My parents used to do that, too, and I think it has definitely enhanced my understanding and maybe also triggered my love for foreign languages. Another great thing is singing different language songs to/with the kids. My mom sang English, French and Italian songs with us when we were little and we loved it.

English slang:

TNX (written only)
Tanks
Much grass (a version of the Spanish Muchas gracias, many thanks)

German:
Danke, Danke schoen (Thank you very much, literally thank you pretty/beautiful)

“Thank you, God,” is Gott sei dank (God be thanked)

French:
Merci, Merci beaucoup (Thank you very much)

Spanish:
Gracias, Muchas gracias (Many thanks)

(I know you mentioned these, Meenakshi, but thought I would mention which languages they are from.)

Blessings, OM Bastet
