from Channel 3 Omaha news

Family Accuses Officers of Brutality; Police Respond

Oct 22, 2007 04:18 PM CDT

Omaha, NE - A family is furious, saying they were brutalized by police after they called 9-1-1 for help.
Late this afternoon, those 9-1-1 tapes were released, showing the family made numerous calls to police asking for help.

Police say the family turned on them after they heard one of the officers ticketed the 17-year-old the night before.
That 17-year-old, Dakota Pekas, tells Action 3 News police were excessively rough when they came to his bedroom: "He (the officer) slammed my head in the wall, where the dents are. I blacked out after that."
Chief Thomas Warren denies wrongdoing on the part of officers: "There's always two sides. The facts will come out. They'll come out in a court of law."

His mother says she needed help because Dakota Dekas was having seizures and vomiting in his bedroom.
Police say his family called 9-1-1 because he was out-of-control. Chief Warren tells us: "The family had called, insisting Dakota Pekas be arrested."
One of the two officers knew Dakota--he'd ticketed him for stealing alcohol from a convenience store the night before.
Dakota's mother, Diane Pekas, says the officer caused the problems: "He escalated the majority of the situation, started freaking out in my son's bedroom."

But the police chief has a different version of what happened: "Family members turned on the officers who were present. I might add the officers indicated these individuals might be under the influence of alcohol."
Officers put out a "Help an Officer" call, bringing more police to the house.
At that point the mother describes a "riot. They ran through. Took out their tasers. Sprayed my children in the face with pepper spray."
Chief Warren counters: "It was the family members who initiated the physical confrontation with the officers. Of course officers have the right to defend themselves."
Chief Warren says he read the reports and doesn't find that his officers did anything wrong.
The Pekas family is expected to pursue this legally.

Reported by Kathy Sarantos Niver, kathy@action3news.com

Lincoln Mayor Supports Safe Haven Law

Lincoln, NE - Lincoln's City Council will be asked to support a safe haven law in Nebraska. Safe haven laws allow parents to leave children at hospitals, police or fire stations without criminal prosecution. Nebraska is one of two states that does not have a safe haven law. Lincoln city council member Robin Eschliman will ask the council to support a statewide safe haven law and encourage the Nebraska Legislature to pass it.

Lincoln Mayor Chris Beutler, a former state senator, supports the resolution, "The tragedy of an unwanted child is only magnified when a baby's life or health is threatened. Hopefully, the enactment of a baby safe haven law will help prevent these situations and allow us to find loving guardians for these children."

The airline industry has been using modified vegetable oil for years. The temperature extremes in aviation destroys fossil oil based products.

Mr. Diesel designed his engine to run on vegetable oil. The current diesel engines will run on strained used cooking oil... cheap transportation if you can find it. The characteristics required of the fuel are a low air pressure, stays near the same viscosity through its temperature range, and burns only below a certain temperature. The last characteristic enables diesel engines to have a very high torque at low RPMs.

The other easy alternative is alcohol. Brazil is running mostly on ethanol fermented from sugarcane.

World oil production will start to fall sometime during this decade, never to rise again. In 1956, M. King Hubbert predicted that U.S. oil production would peak in the early 1970's. Although Hubbert was widely criticized by some oil experts and economists, in 1971 Hubbert's prediction came true. The 100 year period when most of the world's oil is being discovered became known as "Hubbert's Peak". The peak stands in contrast to the hundreds of millions of years the oil deposits took to form. Hubbert's methods predict a peak in world oil production less than five years away.

This pod is for zaadsters who have a unique zaadz positivsm slant on a topic that usually inspires doom, gloom, survivialism and depression. Ideas to survive, thrive, how-we-gonna-drive, stay alive, no jive, the pending scenario known as PeakOil.

Help be part of the solution!!

Today's NE State paper has a great commentary on the recent serious state of the current administration's power grabbing. Sobering stuff. Just a question for those inclined towards such things: how long do you suppose you have to stay in Purgatory, or incarnate as a mangy antwater, or polish jackbbooots in Hell, for some of the stuff the current leadership in Washington seem oh-so-comfortable with? Holy Moly.

From Statepaper.com

Nebraska StatePaper.Com NewsUpdate
                             March 14, 2007

"America is witnessing an example of why laws must sometimes be changed
to protect the power balance that is supposed to be reflected in the
three branches of government. Remember when FDR sought a third
presidential term? There was no law against it. No one thought the
two-term precedent set by George Washington would ever be ignored. Now
comes the Bush administration, firing U.S. attorneys who refused to
bend to Republican political will. This comes atop the discovery that
Congress earlier approved - mostly without knowing it - a change in law
allowing a president to appoint new U.S. attorneys - without
confirmation hearings before the Senate! If that ain't a political move
toward authoritarian government, there ain't no such thing. Imagine a
president being able to appoint these federal prosecutors with no
congressional oversight. No president should have such complete
authority. Until now, no one thought any president would grasp for it.
Was it illegal? Nope. Should the law be changed so that it can't happen
again - yes. Another good idea: The House and Senate should stop
enacting major laws, such as the Patriot Act, without reading them. Or
having them read by competent staff that can explain it to them. If you
think GWB is being picked on, ask yourself this: How would you have felt
if Bill Clinton tried to snatch and wield such power? This is worse than
bad. It's dangerous. "
