It seems to me that the ego must be pummelled into submission or tricked in order to surrender enough to allow experiences to unmediated by it. This can be done very slowly over a lifetime or all at once.

The trick, it seems, is to find a way of tricking the ego into thinking it will be strengthened or enhanced by surrendering…

What ends up being the tricky part is the tendancy to then become aware of how this has been accomplished, and the ego is then proud of the fact it surrendered… or something like that.
