Anna, what got you interested in chakras? It's so interesting that they are 'in here' and we've to first go 'out there' to look for information about them.I'm wondering if you can share how you became interested in them.

For me, I think it started during some healing attunements; and intellectually when I read about them and realized some of the inter-connections between Maslow's need heirarchy and the 7 main chakras. Not that this is totally a connection, but there are points in which they meet. This helped me a lot in parenting. [Parenting the whole child]
As I've moved through healing sessions, Traversing the labyrinth ,
meditation and reading, much more is coming to Light!

I'm looking forward to reading up on the links you've posted.

Meenakshi, I have a lot to learn about the subtle body and energies! I cannot actually remember when I 1st became aware of them, but I learned a little more detail during reiki and yoga teacher training.

I'll share a little about these psychic centres which interact with the physical body through two major vehicles - the endocrine system and the nervous system. The Chakras are in the vicinity of the spine. Chakra is a Sanskrit word that means “Wheel”. There is a lot more information associated with the chakras, including symbols, sounds, colours, senses, elements, deities and so forth - I hope others will expand on this simple outline.

The Root Chakra or in Sanskrit, Muladhara Chakra, is at the base of the spine. This Chakra is where our physical and material survival instincts are seated - our tribal attitudes, family identity, trust, security, ability to be grounded in the here and the now….. The 1st Chakra is regarded as the seat of the Kundalini (Sanskrit coiled one).

The next chakra is the Sacral chakra or Svadhisthana Chakra and the seat of creativity, feelings and sexuality. Sacral and the word sacred are related. Sacral - 'relating to sacred rites or observances'

The Solar Plexus chakra or Manipura Chakra in the vicinity of the navel or slightly higher, is the' inner sun'. This chakra is the seat of vitality, manifesting in the world and perceptions of power.

The Heart chakra, Anahata Chakra is about love and kindness. When it is open, we are compassionate. This powerful Chakra is like a bridge between the three below which relate to earth and the three above which relate to spirit.

The Throat chakra, Visuddha Chakra is about expression - how we express our inner voice - and also communication with others.

The Third Eye, Ajna Chakra, is the seat of intuitive senses - insight, visualization intuition, intellect, reason and transcendence. Here we make the distinction between truth and illusion.

The Crown chakra, Sahasrara Chakra, is not really a chakra and is about wisdom - known as the Thousand-Petaled Lotus. The Root Chakra is about connection with Mother Earth and this chakra is a bit like an umbilical chord to our spiritual nature and the Divine.

The Chakras intersect with the three Nadi's -

The Susumna Nadi is the central nadi and it runs through the spinal column from the Root Chakra to behind the eyebrows.

The Ida Nadi starts at the Root Chakra, on the right side of the spinal column and spirals around the Susumna to the left nostril, then to the Third Eye Chakra.

The Pingala Nadi starts at the Root Chakra, on the left side of the spinal column, and spirals around the Susumna to the right nostril, then to The Third Eye between the Eye Brows.

There's a Google Books preview here.

This is an interesting subject. This is highly involved with the Kundalini Yoga. The number involved is still being argued by several teachers. some are counting the 'Sahasraara' too as a 'chakra' . It is not a 'chakra' . It is the final spot where 'Kundalini' Sakthi meets Siva. Teachers of Yogic postures too have knowledge on this. The\y have certin postures which may help to achieve 'Kundalini' but that path is not permanent. each 'Chakra' has certain powers and deities assigned to it. Chakras below the chest will bring 'siddhies', which have to be avoided to achieve the Supreme. There are lot of web sites and books on this.
I wish to mention another one called “Chithambara Chakra”. There is a holy spot with temple called “Chithambaram” (Chith+Ambara = ambara - Akasa (sky) ). This is famous for the Large sized “Nataraja” (Siva). That temple inside they keep a room under lock all the time. Once a day, a Dhikshit will get in and do Pooja inside it. No one else allowed in. Actually there is nothing inside but empty space. Now you may understand it.
Even, Lord Vishnu keep a Chakra in his hand. that is kept to kill the demons.
Sikh religion too has the descriptions of the Yogic Chakras.

As far as I know , Tibetan Buddhist priests are also experts in this. Normally in Buddhism, they used to start with 'AAna Paana', which is concentrating on the  breath. Some people suggest to concentrate on the nose tip. even this practize also bring 'sidhis'. Mosty recommended one is to concentrate on the  centr between eye brows. That reflects inside a gland placed under the brain. Its shape is nearly like 'Siva Linga'. This is the sixth Chakra. When this is activated, Kundalini gets automatically activated and starts rising up. Before this happens Yoga practitioner must clean the chakras and Nadis appropriately. This is why an experienced Guru is required. If any thing goes wrong the preson concerned become mad, which no one would be able to heal. Mainly the Kundalini must comr through the sushumna and not other Nadis. Even while rising Kundalini might stop in any chakras, and some times return back. Even after getting to the top too it might return back to its base. Allthese chakras too have their own glands (physical) in the same locatin. Kundalini lies in the Prostrate. Manipurak is the Naval. Hara is situated just below it.

dermot said Oct 23, 11:28 AM:

Hi all,

Almost exactly three years ago my chakras were awakened and I experienced samadhi.  It was without doubt the most beautiful experience I have had during this lifetime.

I was studying in Belgium at the time.  Some time before, while still at home in Ireland, I had finished reading the Bible.  When I came towards the end of the Bible, particularly around the Book of John, I felt a sort of a tingling, burning sensation in my lower naval area.  The feeling felt really good to me.  After I would put the Bible down, the sensation would dissipate, but I would feel it again the next night when I continued reading.

Some months later, I moved to Belgium to study Bioethics.  While here, I began reading The Converations with God Trilogy by Neale Donald Walsch.  The book felt really true to me and I began to put some of the principles it spoke of into practice in my life.  The book tells of how acting on our Sponsoring Thoughts, i.e. our first thoughts on something, can be a very powerful thing.  Over three or four days, I acted on my first thoughts every time.  This led me to do things like give money to beggars on the street, carry out a massive cleanup of the cluttered student kitchen I was sharing at the time with others, and meditate a lot.  It was during these meditations that the burning sensation in my lower naval returned, but this time it was much stronger than before.

When I meditated, I discovered that if I got rid of all thoughts and with breath control, I could move the energy up my body.  Over the next three or four days, my seven chakras were awakened.  The first one to awaken was my solar plexus.  It was badly blocked and took a lot of meditation and breath control for build up enough energy to force through the block.  The next day, my heart chakra opened.  This was a mildly frightening experience for me, as I felt I was going to have a heart attack while trying to break through the block in this chakra.  But I put my trust in God and continued.  When my heart chakra awoke, a massive feeling of love and calm filled me and stayed with me.  Over the next two days my first chakra opened (while meeting a girl for the first time (who I hope to see again)), then my second chakra, then my throat chakra, then my brow chakra, and finally, my crown chakra.

Over the period that my final three chakras awoke, I gradually entered samadhi.  I was in paradise for this time.  The normally dismal and messy streets of the Belgian city that I was living in took on a golden hue.  The air was pure and clean.  The water tasted like some kind of nectar.  The people were all finely dressed.  The pigeons who roamed the street were now white doves.  I felt pure bliss.  It was heaven on earth.

The hard thing for me was the coming back down to what we call normality.  It came very sharply and abruptly, as I was forced to no longer continue acting on my first thoughts.

The whole experience has totally transformed me as a person.  I now have definite, clear life goals that I am working towards.  My life is now devoted to helping others evolve and to raise their levels of consciousness, so that they too can experience what I was fortunate enough to taste.

My primary life goals now are to write (mainly poetry and screenplays so far) and to work in areas that I feel we should be concentrating more on … such as the environment (e.g., pollution control), renewable energy, nutrition, community outreach (especially involving the most disadvantaged of our societies), spirituality-based workshops and certain areas of science that I feel can really benefit us (such as biomimetics).  I plan to spend my time between writing and starting up businesses and/or doing research in these sorts of fields.

I have been searching on Gaia for discussions around Kundalini for some time now, and delighted to read people's posts here.

I had a spontaneous Kundalini awakening about ten years ago, having practiced meditation for nigh on twenty years.  I had never heard of kundalini before, and I was completely thrown!!.  I had to take a year or so out from work, and just lie low and process the profound changes in my gross  and subtle body,.  With the help of a shaman it took several months to work through my chakras, and in the process I spontaneously bruised each day on my hands and feet as energy blasted through my body.  I have written about it here  www.primals.org - go to articles and archives and the title is:  When the Volcano Erupts.

I wrote this 'essay' as I feel strongly that very few therapists/spiritual directors are aware of the power of this subtle energy and it's wonderful evolutionary invitation,  and they  can do more damage than good by their ignorance when someone comes to them experiencing kriyas and various other phenomena as I did.

Today having worked for the past ten years through the various blocks and repressed feelings and memories of this and previous lives,  ( as Adyashanti puts it so kindly, dealing with all the egoic distortions ) I live a quiet life, working as a spiritual guide and primal integration facilitator  a couple of days a week.

I am aware that I need to conserve this energy, as my body clearly demonstrates from time to time.

Right now my heart chakra is extraordinarily active at night.  I awake in the middle of the night, and my whole chest area feels expanded  and tingling….and I have a profound sense of being love and loved to the point of ecstasy.

I am a dreadfully slow learner, and questioned  and resisted this experience for several months, ( as I did while moving through the other chakras areas ) until I finally let go into the experience.

When I  hear of people desperately trying to open up this kundalini energy, I shiver, as if there are many blocks from childhood etc.,then the ride will not be smooth.

Dermot it sounds like you had a beautiful 'ride' , and I am delighted to hear where this has taken you in your life.  It must be our shared Celtic spirituality which is still very much part of our psyche.

Hi Clare,

Yes, I think that there is something in that.  I believe Irish people are deeply rooted in a very natural way of life, a way that is very conducive to spiritual evolution.  It's a pity, though, that more do not seek to lift the mask of ego and find the beauty beneath.

Your awakening sounds like it was very powerful.  I know it can take a long time to fully adjust to life afterwards, but I think that having gone through the experience, life becomes infinitely more richer and purposeful.

Right now, I am slightly hesitant about doing more chakral meditations.  I feel that I've benefitted so much from my earlier awakening, and I would like to devote a great deal of time into fully exploring all the inspiration that I have gained so far.  I wonder, do you still long for that feeling of bliss that you got when fully awakened?

Best wishes,
Dermot

Dermot,   Thank you for asking, but no I don't long for that feeling of bliss and so on as part of the kundalinie awakening.  But `i need to say that I don't feel that I am fully awake, I believe that kundalini awakening, simply awakens that trapped energy  of a lifetime, and that the psychological/emotional/spiritual work just begins then.  I remember reading one of Bernadette Roberts' books where she says that opening to our divinity is easy but opening to our humanity takes a lifetime, and she was writing this 30 years after her 'awakening'.  So `i take each as it comes as pure grace to complete on earth that which God has invited me to do.

As a yoga teacher, the school of yoga I teach is called Integral Vinyasa Krama Yoga which has an Ayurvedic influence. There are many different schools of yoga, falling under the overarching title, Hatha yoga. I have attended some Kundalini yoga classes and I don't know if it was the particular teacher - I found the difference which stood out for me, was the type of breath which seemed very rigorous and fast in comparison to the slow, deep, gentle breath I'm more used to practicing. Generally I feel the different schools of yoga do not have fundamental differences. My body type being predominantly Vata, I personally enjoy a introverted, meditative experience while practicing rather than a very vigorous practice which may be more suited to a Kapha body type.

Yoga classes as they're generally taught, do not focus much, if at all on meditation. Mostly they have an aspect of relaxation to them which can be a nice preparation for meditation and a class can be practiced mindfully. My sense is when we speak of Kundalini, this relates to spiritual practice and more particularly meditation, which seems to be about the goal of awakening. I'd love to hear what others have to say.

Bhattaji this is a very interesting read! What comes up for me is a number of these symptoms can be 'confused' with symptoms of illness, eg pains in the chest. There seems to be an enormous and very broad range of signs and symptoms which leads me to wonder if there arent many more people experiencing them than one would realise. The question coming to mind is, does this mean that many people are experiencing Kundalini in their every day lives and having no idea that is is the case.

EXPERIENCES ON AWAKENING OF KUNDALINI

During meditation you behold divine visions, experience divine smell, divine taste, divine touch, hear divine Anahata sounds. You receive instructions from God. These indicate that the Kundalini Shakti has been awakened. When there is throbbing in Muladhara, when hairs stand on their roots, when Uddiyana, Jalandhara and Mulabandha come involuntarily, know that Kundalini has awakened.

When the breath stops without any effort, when Kevala Kumbhaka comes by itself without any exertion, know that Kundalini Shakti has become active. When you feel currents of Prana rising up to the Sahasrara, when you experience bliss, when you repeat Om automatically, when there are no thoughts of the world in the mind, know that Kundalini Shakti has awakened.

When, in your meditation, the eyes become fixed on Trikuti, the middle of the eyebrows, when the Shambhavi Mudra operates, know that Kundalini has become active. When you feel vibrations of Prana in different parts inside your body, when you experience jerks like the shocks of electricity, know that Kundalini has become active. During meditation when you feel as if there is no body, when your eyelids become closed and do not open in spite of your exertion, when electric-like currents flow up and down the nerves, know that Kundalini has awakened.

When you meditate, when you get inspiration and insight, when the nature unfolds its secrets to you, all doubts disappear, you understand clearly the meaning of the Vedic texts, know that Kundalini has become active. When your body becomes light like air, when you have a balanced mind in perturbed condition, when you possess inexhaustible energy for work, know that Kundalini has become active.

When you get divine intoxication, when you develop power of oration, know that Kundalini has awakened. When you involuntarily perform different Asanas or poses of Yoga without the least pain or fatigue, know that Kundalini has become active. When you compose beautiful sublime hymns and poetry involuntarily, know that Kundalini has become active.

When I read posts about the experience of Kundalini, it seems one has an experience of Kundalini then refers to the memory of this experience. I wonder if there is something 'beyond' which is not so temporary.

When I read experiences on awakening Kundalini, I feel many can relate to some of the 'signs\symptoms'. Which would mean the experience is varied and different people may have different experiences and perhaps also differing degrees of experience. I am wondering if there is a progression between 'awakening Kundalini' and 'awakened Kundalini'.

I agree with you. If you refer books by Gopi Krishna, then you will come to understand how much he suffered at the initial stages because there was no proper guru to guide him. It may rise up suddenly without knowledge of your own depending on your Sadhanas or practices it will return to back to the base. It will take lot of time settle firmly in Sahasrara. It could return back without going further up and return with the second, third, fourth or fifth and come up again at a different time but not frequently. Normally those who have gone upto shasrara never comes back. They will forget the world. Most people who went up to the sixth chakra will be able to view a deity with six faces and in case of siva worshipers it will be shanmuga and in case of Sakthi worshipers end up with the female deity with six faces. In some other cses they never reach sahasrara and speak with their deity of their own and end up thinking they have seen the god. but this is not so. Kundalini reaching the sahasrara is the utmost bliss. others describing these experiences have not achieved the proper thing. Those who achieved will not describe it. They will not be able to do so. Wlkinf in the air on the water and similar other siddhies are achieved by going up to lower chakras but these 'Adda (8) Maha siddhies are useless.

Sanmugan, I enjoyed reading the information.

A question comes to mind - of what value to the Oneness or the world is kundalini awakening? Is it one soul that awakens; or does an entire soul family do so, when that happens? My 'feeling' is that from the sahasrara is only oneness but perhaps that comes in the chakras beyond the sahasrara?

The reason I'm asking is, that when we think of something that we've heard about - for instance, kundalini awakening - we may begin to feel “this is something to pursue” not because it has begun to awaken, but because we THINK we should do so. That is when we may feel the need to show how kundalini has awakened within us.

When it has, and to the level it has, everyone around us can sense it, even those who are more asleep. As I see in Bhatta's post above. There is therefore no need to tie this to our sense of separateness and ego, and talk about it except in the company of illumined ones.

Kundalini awakening is not a miracle; as it is our inner essence, the truth that is always within us. The miracle is the human life that it has created. That we can be partially asleep and partially awake and yet fully in it. Kundalini will sleep or awaken according to the work our higher self has chosen to do in this world - actually, according to the experience 'it' has chosen for us. Each level of its awakening is to be honored. For it awakens us - we do not awaken it.
That's how it seems to me!

I think it is better to read the book by Swami Sivananda on Kundalini. The link provided by honorable Bhatta at the end of his post as source will bring the entire book online.

Swami clearly explains everything involved. He begs everyone as to not to try the Hatha yoga steps which too bring this to happen.

Japa, Dhyana(meditation) too bring this to us. It will take a bit longer time. By concentrating in between the eye brows we stimulate the pineal gland situated parallel to that spot and located under our brain. It is made like a cave (Guha). The reason for the Lord Skanda gets this name: 'Guha'. Pituitary gland surrounds the Pineal and protects it. This is the connecting plane to the Universe. If any one tries to concentrate on Kundalini direct, nothing will happen at all. Only Pineal can draw the draw the Kundalini towards it.

Ladies actually have more advantage on this. worldly people do not recognise it and punished them in the past. In the 'Autobiography of an Yogi', Paramahansa Yogananda describes lady saints he met while touring in europe. All of them have achieved this but they were not aware of it.

RamaKrishna Paramahamsa begged from Kali Matha to stop all those siddhies and requested, 'I want only my mother.' Kali matha became a Yogini and helped him achieve all that he wanted . Once it is fully awakened and reached the top of the head, you will need nothing related to this world.

You may have heard about Sathasiva Brahmam, famous saint, he will be just walking without knowing that he is walking. In Sri Lanka, Buddhist priests addressed as 'Rahathan Vahansela'  used to move in the sky without their knowledge in the meditating posture. They used to live in caves.

They never eat or drink anything. Ramana Maharishi's disciple , a virgin lady who never met Maharishi but read his books and continued her meditation. During midnights her bed will carry her to the top of the roof inside the house, her attendant sleeping close by will shout at the incident. The lady will calmly say ,'get down, I do not want these siddhies.'

Shirdi baba used to to sleep on a small plank tied to the roof , while he is sleeping his legs and hands leave him alone and rest separately in a corner, in the mornings the used to come back to their own position.

If you check the anatomy picture and the Chakras picture , you can find certain glands which have no connections to the blood streams direct will be there. it is available in Wikipedia too. These also control us. when we become more enthusiastic with spiritual things the pineal gland give secretions to Pituitary and from there more signals in chemical form distributed to other similar glands. Gland in the chest makes any one fearless. It will have to be fed with mothers milk for that purpose. Children growing without Mothers' milk will be affected accordingly. when we initiate only Higher self helps. In other cases it is continuing from the earlier birth. We who decide our destiny.

Re: side-effects of Kundalini

It should be noted that Kundalini can be aroused artificially by a willful, forced or egoistic practice.  It can also be stimulated by drugs or extreme emotional reactions.  If the nature is not purified, the Kundalini may only serve to aggrandize the ego.  It tends to magnify our nature, so that if our nature is not yet attuned to Divine Will, it may magnify our weaknesses.  Hence, Kundalini practices do have their possible side-effects and should be done with care.

The proper awakening of Kundalini is through Divine Grace…our effort must be to attune ourselves to the Grace.  Merely to arouse Kundalini is not an end in itself.  The goal is to move more deeply into peace.  When power is not part of peace, it always becomes destructive.  The premature arousing of the Kundalini can burn up the nervous system.  It can limit or prevent our spiritual growth perhaps for the rest of our lives.

Kundalini can be used up to the level of the third chakra, or solar plexus, to increase the powers of the ego….The critical mind of the third chakra often considers itself to be enlightened….However, it cannot see the Divine presence in others or its own limitations and usually becomes caught in some process of manipulation….

THE SAMADHI YOGA :

82. The Kundalini Sakti is like a thread in the Lotus. It is resplendent. It is biting with its mouth, the upper end of its body, at the root of the Lotus, the Mulakanda or the Muladhara.

83. It is in contact with the hole of Brahmanadi of Sushumna, taking hold of its tail with its mouth.

84. Seated in Padmasana, if a person who has accustomed himself to the contraction of his anus (Mula Bandha), makes the Vayu go upwards with the mind intent on Kumbhaka, the Agni comes to the Svadhishthana flaming, owing to the
blowing of Vayu.

85. From the blowing of Vayu and Agni, Kundalini pierces open the Brahmagranthi. It then pierces open the Vishnugranthi.

86. Then the Kundalini pierces the Rudragranthi. After that, it pierces all the six lotuses or the plexus. Then the Kundalini Sakti is happy with Siva in Sahasradala Kamala, the thousand-petalled lotus. This should be known as the highest Avastha
or the state. This alone is the giver of final beatitude.

Siddhis are like candlelight

You do all kinds of things to come upon this strange beauty of silence. Do not do it, just observe. Look, sirs, you know in all this are various powers of clairvoyance, reading somebody’s thought. There are various powers, you know what I am talking about, don’t you? You call them siddhis, don’t you? Do you know all these things are like candles—candlelight in the sun? When there is no sun, there is darkness, and then the light of the candle is very important; but when there is the sun, the light, the beauty, the clarity, then all these powers, these siddhis are like candlelight. They have no value at all. And when you have the light, there is nothing else—developing various centres, the chakras, kundalinis, you know all that business. You need a sane, logical, reasoning mind, not a stupid mind. A mind that is dull can sit for centuries breathing, concentrating on its various chakras, and you know all that playing with kundalinis—it can never come upon that which is timeless, that which is real beauty, truth and love. - Krishnamurti in India 1970-71, pp 180-181
