We have clothes markets in the street still sometimes, but they are few and far between now. They used to be more common when I was a child. We still have a local one, both indoors and outdoor a couple of miles from home where they sell meats, cheese, fish, pottery, shoes, clothes, cottons, ribbons etc |

Hi Eli, our rivers are really small compared to this one……is river travel one of your means of transport, living so close by. Our canals in this country are being cleared bit by bit, they used to be one of the main forms of transport in England, before all the motorways. Many country folk used to live on the canals, transporting goods and horses used to pull the barges along the tow paths. |

The River “Ganges” (locally called Hoogly) has speedboats. There are regular “ferry services” for office time passengers. One of my posts in this thread ”Crossing the Bridge” shows the Howrah Bridge which runs across this river. This connects the two sides of my city. Road traffic is congested, and many people prefer using the ferry service rather than using the road transport. Goods transportation is also done using the river route. If ever I get an opportunity to take some pics of these activities, I'll post them. |

Thanks Eli look forward to the river pics, speedboats wow, it seems like 2 different cultures, 2 ways of life…..I've always thought I would like to take a break and try living on a canal barge, slow and steady and gentle. Someone on TV recently had invented a rudderless canal boat - this would propel the boat forwards and backwards without having to turn around in a narrow canal, this would make things a whole lot easier on our waterways. |

Just tried to rectify a spelling and it's taken the whole of the post away, think I'd put about where I live in England it is very flat as it was a glaciated valley, there are a few hills here, but not very high. Your country looks flat too on the photos Eli |

When it Rains in Kolkata
This is one of the most common sights during rainy season in Kolokata. No, it is not flood, it is waterlogging. Almost 80% of the city roads are under water due to poor drainage system. In my area, the water recedes after roughly 3 days, and people wade through water or hire Rickshaws at 10 times the normal fare to cross the waterlogged area. (These two photos are not shot by me, they are collected from Internet) |

A beautiful bird in Kolkata “You can call it providence; I call it capturing God’s creation in a moment. Well this bird gave me more than a moment. Perched on a railing outside one of our office windows just a couple of feet away, this feathered beauty spent more than an hour posing for all the shutterbugs in the office. And yes I do make time for capturing stuff like this. I remember a time in Kolkata when one could see so many birds, but with development and the felling of trees such sights are a feast for one’s eyes.” [mod fix - it was a repeat of the one above Lee's post so I put in an interesting story so not to loose the rest of the threads in case it got deleted… ~kes]

Thank you Eli for posting and showing us your country….In our country the big changes are happening. In our life and in our friends lives there have been many redundancies, losses from business closing and reduced working hours, and most recently pension suspension……we have to adjust and accept this balancing process for the sake of all of humanity. We are all changing so much with this process, but I think the changes are for the better… |
