Now I Can See the Moon

Masahide wrote the following haiku:

“Barn's burnt down … Now I can see the moon”. Can you see the moon?

i didn't know the beauty of the sunrise
until i woke before the sun
to sit and watch the pale light
grow and stretch from the dark corner of the sky
i didn't know until the light had spread across to me
and touched my face
bathing me in a soft golden hue
and drenching the sky in violet and pink
i did not know…

i didn't know the beauty of the wave
until i sat beside the ocean
and felt its rumbling breath break out
from deep below
curl and crash against itself and then
lay tumbled and foamy at my feet
utterly spent from the effort
to retreat again to its dark endless belly
to soon return to touch my red painted toes

i didn't know the beauty of love
until i met you
not from a word of praise or encouragement
or recognition or a touch against my shoulder
but from your embrace as endless as the sea
this love, i know now,
is not found in words or actions
but grows as the rose does - just to be
to exist where it could not have existed before
but does… but does

i didn't know beauty until i opened my heart
and found myself in everything -
in the sunrise, in the wave, in you
inbetween knowing and remembering
is the jewel of my life
the light draws me out
the wave crashes to remind me
and you give the world in that single moment

i did not know until now
