Mac, thanks so much for the zoo pictures - your daughter looks so happy working with them!
Kathy, I loved that story about the baby hippo and 130 year old tortoise in Kenya after the tsunami waves disrupted their lives! That was about three years ago... I wonder what has become of them? Here's another link: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=4754996

Jenny

Thanks for sharing your heart-warming experiences with the dying, Jenny. I was with my mother when she died. She never seemed to accept that she was dying and became more and more reserved as she approached death. But I sensed a change a few hours before she died - at the time it seemed like a surrender. She began looking past us as if she saw someone she recognized. She was clearly focused on someone or something that none of us could see. She hadn't spoken for a long while and startled us when she quietly said, "I hope they hurry up." She died a few minutes later. For years I wondered what she was looking at or if she was hallucinating or what...
Last year, because Tim's stepdad was dying, Tim's aunt recommended to us the book Final Gifts: Understanding the Special Awareness, Needs, and Communications of the Dying by Maggie Callanan, a Hospice nurse, and Patricia Kelley. It answered so many of my questions - I wonder if you've read it? I now think perhaps my mother was focused on someone she knew who was welcoming her spirit. I definitely have the sense that my mother has been gently leading me along my current spiritual journey, using synchronicity and nature to teach me what I want to know... She was a bird lover and for a few summers I had a little group of six mourning doves comforting me as I gardened. I love your butterfly metaphor.

Barbara

Lovely, ~KES!

We delight in the beauty of the butterfly, but rarely admit the changes it has gone through to achieve that beauty.
~ Maya Angelou

      Hi Jenny

It's an ice plant, some sort of sedum - do you want a cutting! - it roots really easily. It even looks good when the flowers die down and the heads turn reddy brown. Butterflies and moths really love them...

Please thank her for showing these.

She has one of the luckiest jobs... we can all learn from the animals.
