Well, I would suggest, maybe reading it to him as a bedtime story, altering the appropriate passages for a boy his age. Although Dan had suggested a couple of books he has written for younger children, "Secret of the Peaceful Warrior" and "Quest for the Crystal Castle" Those would be VERY appropriate :) For yourself, have you read "The Journey's of Socrates"? You will enjoy that too! Oh my, that book just brought it all together for us! As for the movie....it was FABULOUS! I felt like I was watching a movie on the lives of some personal good friends! It brought tears to my eyes! I saw it twice this weekend! My kids, ages 10 & 12 really enjoyed it. I had read the book to them as a bedtime story, one chapter a night, if they could stay awake, which they usually did! They were around 8 & 10 when I read them the book. They often make reference to Dan, Joy and Socrates. It is definitely something to share with your children, why make them learn the hard way?

All I hear repeatedly in my head is, "The Journey is what makes you happy, not the destination"

The book was life-changing!! I read it as a teen and it introduced me to a stillness that I am still mastering. As we all are . .

The Way of the Peaceful Warrior – Movie Review

Wow. Double wow. This movie provided what The Secret and What the Bleep were missing - a script, brilliant cinematography and A-list actors. This is the, as yet unparalleled, mark in spiritual cinema. It brings a unique set of messages, without the heavy handedness of its precursors, by beautifully telling the story of young Dan Millman (played by Scott Mechlowicz). We follow the main character, a Big Man on Campus at Cal, through his remarkable self-realization and transformation. He is a varsity gymnast, booze hound, type-A, macho lady killer. He has everything, yet nothing. The movie begins with his lack of contentment with material pursuits.

He meets a yogi, and gas station service attendant, Soc (Nick Nolte), and begins his tutelage in the nature of reality. Of course, this wouldn't be much of story if the main character had nothing to lose, so Dan gives up everything he loves (booze, girls, meat, macho head-games, focus on gymnastics) to learn from Soc. He resists every lesson, only to eventually embrace it and literally transform his entire being.

I was blown away. Several things make this movie one of the best I have ever seen.

The wisdom – this film is full of amazing quotes and wisdom. It is an evolutionary imperative that I now read the book.
The integration of this wisdom with the art of wonderful story-telling and film-making. This film hit the nail on the head, entertaining while enlightening. Such claims can only be made by masterpieces such as Gandhi, Pay It Forward, Fight Club, 12 Angry Men and American Beauty.
A personal connection with the main character, Dan Millman, as I too shared his pursuit of and eventual discontent with mainstream society's ideals.

I would be doing you a profound disservice were I not to relate my favorite pieces of wisdom from the film (pardon the inaccuracy – I couldn't find the actually quotes anywhere online).

Dan: You're out of your mind. Soc: It took a lot of work. This a succinct expression of the most powerful message of the movie, Present Moment Awareness, PMA, as well as everything related in Power of Now. There is nothing more important to happiness, spiritual communion and impact than living in this present moment. Soc demonstrated that “there is never nothing going on”, by exposing Dan to the subtle pleasures of PMA: a ladybug, a conversation, a kiss – all around us exists extraordinary expressions of life, humanity, spirit.
Nobody has answers – all wisdom comes from within. Dan learns this by spending hours perched atop an old Plymouth waiting for wisdom and spirit to reveal itself, producing fantastic results. No teacher, no problem. This gives Dan the confidence in the knowledge that he is infinitely wise and powerful, and all he needs to do to tap into it is go within.
The three principles of reality: Paradox, Humor & Change. Everything is not which it is (is the Sun revolving around the Earth or vice versa or are both in motion?); everything changes, so attachment is futile; so we might as well enjoy the moments (often years or decades long) of our own folly which result from believing anything to the contrary.
People are incredibly dynamic and can change to an extent far beyond common perceptions. This is demonstrated in several points throughout the film, most markedly when Dan kills the “old Dan”, literally clearing the clutter of his old ways and creating the room for his true self to emerge.
There is only the journey. Dan learns that the experience of life is infinitely more important, and thus worthy of complete focus, than the mundane material markers along the way.
Dan: The people who are hardest to love are the ones that need it most. PMA produces many amazing effects, most notably identity and compassion. Compassionate living seems to be the most profound change in Dan's character, as he embraces humility and empathy as ways of being.

When this film comes to your town or video store, please check it out. It is the gateway drug to PMA and spiritual living.

Finally got to see PW last night. Was in a big unpacking mess after a few weeks on the road. Out of the blue a thought came to me - get online and see if PW is showing in San Diego. Yes!!!!! I dragged myself away from my chaotic piles and boxes. Ohhh, I did not mention that I had just moved nests prior to my trip, LOL.

PW was a super way for me to review lessons I have learned. I had no expectations. I had not read anything about the movie except that I should not miss it. I was riveted to my seat throughout the whole experience.

I floated out of the theatre and stepped outside into the warm night air. I immediately noticed a lightness and tranquility within. I think my inner smile was showing on my face. As I walked back to my car I felt an overwhelming connection to my brothers and sisters in our global village.

When I arrived home I looked around, and instead of groaning at the sight that befell me, I said to myself, "OK, Grasshopper, what is the lesson here?" Laughing out loud I began my task, looking forward to watching the transformation from the jumbled mess into my new, blissful sanctuary.

Mahalos to Dan Millman and the producers.

I disagree with a part of this review. As a refutation of the notion that this is a "New Age" movie, the author said "there is nothing new about this philosophy."
Having read numerous New Age books philosophical, spiritual, and religious, and I have not found anything in them that suggests that the author is stating anything new. It is more of a modern version of older philosophies, whether it be a revival of such or simply a restatement.

I just had the privilege to see a private screening of the movie at a Coachville Conference in Chicago that I attended.
It’s definitely part of the new generation of movies, like What the bleep do you know.
I believe that we are going to see more and more movies like that.
Afterward we had one of the producers talk to us.
The opening day is June 2nd, and they need help with spreading the word. Hollywood doesn’t support this kind of movie, for now. We can show them that there is an audience for it.
I’ve sent an email to all my friends and people I know. Because I believe it can help them in their journey and also to help the people that put together this movie, so they can do more.
Please, help to enlighten the world.

Hey Brian,

Being it sounds like you have the inside in, do you know where and when the rest of us who live in a far off planet will be able to see this movie? I know it premiered last night, but does this mean that it is out in theaters now? Or, will it not be released to theaters until June 2nd, as I had read in another pod? I live in Lone Pine, so LA or Vegas are both 3 hours away. Tell me where it is showing and I will be there! It was so nice to read Jessica's comments. I was worried that a movie could not do that wonderful book justice, I am relieved to believe that was taken into consideration :) I am so looking forward to turning everyone I know onto this movie. It is easier to get many people to see a movie, than it is to get them to read a book at times :) Thanks again,
