Peace, Pax, ??

Peace Eagle said Apr 21, 2008, 8:38 PM:

I thought it might be nice to start a thread of the word “Peace” in different languages. Granted, that alone is not an act of peace, however, I thought it would be nice to hear from folks all over the world how they say peace in their native tongue. Perhaps it could become a fun bonding exercise for us all, eh? Anyone out there up for the game?

Heddwch in Welsh , Chaparral -
how is it pronounced?
Perhaps as we do this we could
also spell it out how it sounds in English that we may
be able to say it properley?
I guess although we say peace here in Aussie Land -
I haven't even found the Aboriginal word equivelant.
Which i must do -or maybe they their word would be\
more harmony -did they need the word peace before
white man came along ,along - I wonder?
Peace to the Welsh -and Catherine Zeta-Jones of course, too!

oo (short oo) and ch as in the scottish loch (not much 'c' and lots of 'hh') a bit like Ugh.

This might be interesting for you - in Russian the words for “peace” and “world” are the same: “Мир” -  “MYR” (or “meer”). There is a popular “soviet” slogan saying “MYRU - MYR”, or “peace to the world”!

And in Greek it's (“eirini”) “YRINI”, a root for a popular name Irine I believe. A popular greeting on various national holidays in Greek is “Agapi kai eirini!”, or “love and peace!”.

I have never had much contact with Russia and it is so
amazing to hear that “meer” is the word for both
peace and the world.
peace to you all , everywhere -long may we keep spreading it

We are learning -slowly ,that whatever the lanuage -
there is always a word for peace.

I have no doubt I am not pronouncing them properly
but it gives me great joy just to read them and to imagine
being in another Country and saying it with them!

Guess we won't get the word peace in EVERY language-
cause some Countrie would not have internet accessible to
the everyday kind of people like us.

We ARE blessed to be able to share with one another-
and we ARE spreading the word…….

How wonderful to read of Peace in every language. In Dutch it is 'vrede' (as I noticed it's already up here somewhere. It is pronounced vrayduh.
De la paix  (pronounced duh-la peh - no h-sound after p) in French.
In Papiamentu (spoken language in Curacao, Aruba and Bonaire) it is 'pas' (paahs - again without the h-sound after p).
שלום (shalom) in Hebrew
سلام (salām) in Arabic
And in Hopi, one of the (if not the) eldest native american tribes, it is 'Sipala'.

Let's practice saying these peaceful words, close our eyes and feel the vibration of the power behind them, inhaling deeply, feeling them in every fiber of our being, and exhaling them with a strong intention to send these vibrations all around. As you exhale, do so loud enough to hear your breath, which is the voice of your soul. Feel yourself giving and receiving peace with every breath, and recognize that this quiet peace within you is your truest and highest self.

Om shanti!
Nell ;-)

Now the language this word for PEACE comes from is called “Embosha” from the planet Emboson and it is a fully functional literary language from The Embosonians series of kids' sci fi adventures by KE Allen.  The language boasts around 1250 words and is spoken by Embosonians, Orphies and some humans.
Disclaimer: This is not an unabashed plug for my fourth kids book, The Embosonians - ORBAN THALIN, hopefully coming out in 2009 about being green and peaceful. I'm working on the website. busy, busy, busy!

An Australian Aboriginal word for  peace as in rest and peacefulness, not sure whether it means peace as opposed to war. Not sure which people it came from but could be Central Coast of New South Wales The Darkinjung people are made up of the tribes Erina, WoyWoy, Narara, Patonga, Wyong, Kulnura, Tuggerah and Wolombi. They went up to Newcastle I think.

In Hungarian, peace is BEKE.

In Rumanian, peace is PACE (pronounced pa'che)

I noticed with interest that peace in Dutch is 'vrede' for that same word in Danish means, angry (of course, pronounced differently).

As mentioned in an earlier, post, in Hebrew, peace is SHALOM (שלום). In Hebrew, different words/meanings emanate from the same root. The root of SHALOM is SHALEM, which means, 'wholeness.' This indicates perhaps, that to be at peace with oneself is to feel whole with oneself, for example.

Well, its not in my native tongue, but I have tattooed this version of Peace onto my left wrist. It says Salaam, which is Peace in Arabic. It was a gift from an activist I worked with in the Iraq Veterans Against the War at a fundraiser we did at a tattoo parlor. To me, it serves as a reminder of my cause, a defining moment in my life, and what I have dedicated much of mySelf to.

an add on in dutch…we have an expression “in peis en vrede” .. it is special because it links “pax” (peace, latin/roman derivative) to “frede”(german/sakson/scandinavian origin),
this expression litterally connects “peace” with being “at rest”.Lovely
BTW: peis, sometimes written pais is to pronounce like “pays”(english pronounciation, not the french one :-)
