“We look forward to a world founded upon four essential human freedoms.
“The first is freedom of speech and expression - everywhere in the world
“The second is freedom of every person to worship God in his own way - everywhere in the world
“The third is freedom from want … everywhere in the world
“The fourth is freedom from fear … anywhere in the world”
- President Franklin D. Roosevelt, in a message to congress 6 January, 1941.
The desire for world peace has been with us for a loooong time.
Do we have cause for optimism that it can be realised? In our lifetime?
Next year marks the 40th anniversary of man setting foot on the moon. For those that remember it was one of the most remarkable days in history. People from every continent, from every religious or political persuasion stopped and were mesmerized by a sketchy ghostly TV image of a man in a space suite stepping off a ladder onto another world.
For a brief moment of time we had world peace.
How hard can it be to give men and women the incentive to open their hearts to accept the rest of humanity on equal terms and open their minds to see the need and help those in less fortunate circumstances than themselves.
An Australian Aboriginal archaeologist friend of mine told me that before whites came and took over, his ancestors would work about 3 hours per day hunting and the women spend similar time gathering. Child rearing was a tribal responsibility. It was as close to an idyllic lifestyle as could be imagined.
Similar has been found to be true of all primitive lifestyles.
So what went wrong?
How have we gotten ourselves into an environment that requires us to spend a completely inordinate amount of time working just to survive? At the same time choking our planet through poor use of non sustainable carbon based energy just to serve faceless self important wealthy individuals and their 'bottom line' mentality.
i think the hippies of the '60's were onto something when they started to form communes. Of course the more skeptical would suggest that had some of the hippies not come from extremely wealthy families to provide the money to buy the land the communes appeared on it would have been a non event. I don't know, I was too young when it happened.
According to business friends of mine, China is now the awakening giant, but their focus is on the capitalistic lifestyle of the West, not preserving whatever the culture was prior to the arrival of communism. As everybody knows, capitalism can be a good thing as far as everyone doing their share of the work, for equitable pay, according to the responsibility of the position, but it opens the door to unscrupulous manipulation by the wealthy to gain favourable treatment by legislators and politicians when issues crop up that affect their profits to the detriment of all other considerations.
The time to bring light and understanding to China is NOW.
Tomorrow, when capitalism has taken hold, will be too late, the poor will get poorer and the rich richer. And the great 'divide' between them will get greater.
In love and peace
