Why can new Zealand sell hempseed oil for human consumption, when Australia can’t?

New Zealand Food Standards joined FSANZ (Food Standards Australia New Zealand) in 1999. Before this, New Zealand followed the FSNZ and in 1996, FSNZ gave the ok to allow hempseed oil for human consumption to be sold in stores but not  the meal, powder or flour.

This has given the New Zealand hemp industry a kick start ahead of Australia, still the last western country in the world to allow hemp food for human consumption.Due to the increased demand for hemp oil and food, the NZ hemp industry increased their hemp crops and processing facility. They could also market the hempseed oil for human consumption, whereas we cannot. We are only being allowed to sell hempseed oil and food because we state on labels “for pet food only in Australia, safe and suitable for human consumption where legal”.Of course, this causes confusion and consternation, especially for those people who are just finding out about the benefits of hemp foods and are not aware of the Australian legislation. (A lot of our customers have pets.)All the more confusing when people know or find out that overseas, hemp comes in all forms of food—burgers, milk, butter, pasta, bread, cakes, bags of hemp nuts,  flour, protein powder etc.Happy Planet and the Industrial Hemp Association Qld, Inc., are two of the forces establishing a National Hemp Association in Australia and will be asking the NZ Association to join forces with Australia to change the hemp food legislation and establish guidelines, standards and a lobby group for the industry. It is still a risk to Happy Planet to market hemp foods, and it has been with immense difficulty and obstacles in our way. But we continue to do so for a number of reasons: the owners, their families and staff of Happy Planet are firm believers in the benefits of hemp foods and want the food to be available to them and any member of the public;  the government is dictating what a person can/cannot consume—in this case, hemp food, proven safe, nutritious and does not contain THC. It’s not just about fighting for the right to consume hemp food, but the freedom of choice for the individual to make their own decision about what they consume.  Bizarre, isn’t it, that cigarette packs have a warning “smoking causes lung cancer”, yet they are legal and people can choose to smoke or not.We thank all those who continue to support the industry by writing letters to government members asking them to change the legislation.   from the “Happy Planet ” Newsletter -

Sandy, I realize this is an old post, but I vote for returning hemp to recreational use, everywhere and think it is cool that pets are using it for food! I have a dog named George, pictured elsewhere who ocassionally appears to be depressed. Please let me know where I can find an alternative to prozac.

Loved your replies, eflord-gnofleas and Chaparral!!!!

I find it quite amazing that dogs and chickens are allowed to use it-
yet humans are still restricted -lol !

The history of hemp and its ultimate banning is an interesting tale. An excerpt from The Amsterdam Ministry article “Cannabis/Hemp was Legal/Why Was it Banned” states:
Shortly before marijuana was banned by The Marijuana Tax Act of 1937, new technologies were developed that made hemp a potential competitor with the newly-founded synthetic fiber and plastics industries. Hemp's potential for producing paper also posed a threat to the timber industry. Evidence suggests that commercial interests having much to lose from hemp competition helped propagate reefer madness hysteria, and used their influence to lobby for Marijuana Prohibition. It is not known for certain if special interests conspired to destroy the hemp industry via Marijuana Prohibition, but enough evidence exists to raise the possibility.

Hemp is definately a victim of a “false morality”.
If Marijuana were legal then all the spurious arguments used to ban it would be used against the next drug on the list, and not much would change, but Hemp products would be free of stigma and easily available for a wide variety of uses.
If tobacco were illegal then all the arguments used against Marijuana would be used on tobacco (or some other lesser drug) instead.
Hemp is a victim of perceived position on some fantasy table and there is no true morality in banning it, The effects of Marijuana are no different to a host of other drug effects some legal and some illegal. Hemp just happens to be at the point on a fantasy table where deluded people think they can make some kind of a “moral” stand. There will always be deluded people (and not all of them are “on drugs”)

Oh yeah -ain't that the truth !!

And to constantly bring the marijuana battle into the Industrial Hemp
one is evil -and harmful to our planet.
If people can't differenciate between the two they ARE deluded-
and as far as “not on drugs” goes -they deliberately discount the effects
of prescription drugs and alcohol!

Fancy tobacco being legal and marijuana not!!
Tobacco is far worse for the lungs- but hey, ban it and the Drs. and
Health Departments would lose too much money!

Also, all that bull affects the price! we tried to source organic hemp fibre products for our business but they ended up too expensive because there are so few producers and little competition. I've not seen all the comparisons, but I know that cotton uses a massive amount of the worlds artificial fertilisers, and hemp is harder wearing so lasts longer before it wears out.
Let us criticise things for the real reasons - oops sorry, if we did that there might not be any war!

Good point Chaparral -for the REAL reason;s !

And, not only does cotton need arificial fertilisers, it also needs a great
amount of pestisides and water.
But then, that is why they promoted cotton and banned hemp -
the giant chemical companies would have gone out of business!
Du Pont being the most intrumental in the banning of hemp.

Hemp Industry - Australia
Industrial hemp is an extremely efficient weed suppressor. No chemicals are needed for growing this crop. Industrial hemp is a low maintenance crop.
