International Recycling Day & Journal

Mr. said Aug 16, 10:00 PM:

Why don't we start an international recycling day. We could pick one day every month say the first of the month, and call it international recycling day. We could post a list of suggestions of things people could do on that day. We could also have a space (journal) on this pod for people from GAIA and beyond to post what they did in terms of recycling on that day. We could give out posted awards (just a written commendation on the blog) for the three people who did something extraordinary that month. What do you think fellow peace podsters?

Well I think and International Recycling Day and Journal is a wonderful
idea Mr.
The 1st of the month sounds the best, as it is easy to remember and as it
will soon be the !st of September, perhaps we can make a start then?

I shall email this link to our members, and hope those who receive the
mail listings in their mailbox will participate.
We, of course, can start it off and shall look forward to doing so -
everything we can do to save our environment is of paramount importance.

Re: International Recycling Day & Journal

Mr. said Aug 26, 9:16 PM:

Here are some ideas to get the ball rolling:
Start a global list (by city state (or province) and nation of communities that have a recycling program. For instance Los Angeles has 3 trash bins for each home. One for recylcables (plastic, paper & metal ) one for green waste (leaves and lawn trimmings) and one for regular trash. The State of California (as well as many other states in the USA) has an official recycling program that charges the consumer several cents per container for drinks aluminum and plastic containers and then pays back some of the money when they are turned into an official recycling center.
On a running list it might look like this:

Nation                     State / Province        City             Program/type
USA                     California                          Alumnm, plstc, Ppr  Law
USA                     California        Los Angeles  Mtl/Plstc/ppr TrsCns Law
This is just an idea & I'm not got at formatting but having a running list nation by nation, state by state and city by city would  help us and others have a place to see how many communities are doing something and let us know where we need to work on.

Another idea is to list ideas like for instance:
Try to get businesses (like restaurants) to offer different trash containers for plastic, paper so that their trash can be more easily recycleable. Tell them they might be able to sell the plastic to recycling companies and reclaim some of the their overhead.
Try to get your local community government to pass a law requiring companies to have different containers for recycleables.

Let me know what you think of these ideas.

I think these are excellent idea, by cross -referencing other States
and Countries -we can find out where we are lacking and put forward
the proposals to our own Councils.( Local Governments)

I shall gather information from Australia and post here also.
Our householders have two rubbish bins -one for re-cycling,
which is emptied fortnightly as apposed the regular bi which is weekly.

Today Sept 1 -first of Spring !

Today I didn't have the chance to promote re-cycling -though
I do practise it in everyway I can -

Do other countries have compost bins you can purchase for your yard?
Previously I used just to dig a hole in the garden, but now I have my
very own compost bin to put all my vegie scraps in.
It is SO much better than wrapping them and putting them in the
garbage bin and you can put all food scaps in there too-amazing how they
add up.

Re-cycling clothing is of course something we all do and the change of season is a great time to hand on clothing that you know you won't wear, or need
to get rid of to make room in your wardrobe!

I look forward to suggestions from members from other Countries
and hope to find some new tips!

Today it was such a little thing to do and yet if we all do this
-just think of the landfill we can save!
I made a point of taking my old printer cartridge with me when
I shopped for a new one.
I asked in the store  if they took the old ones for re-cycling -
and they took it- even though still waiting on their bin to do so.

If your store doesn't have that facility -why not try requesting
they provide one?

Mr. said Sep 2, 9:44 PM:

Today, I went through the regular trash that other members of my family through out and pulled out all of the paper. cans, plastic and other metal that people were throwing out and put them in the recycle bin. I try and do this on a regular basis. Try it. You will be amazed how much the trash”regular” trash bag shrinks!

Yes -I agree it sure is worth checking what other family members
are throwing out!!

Today
I gave a bad of recycled aluminum cans to a homeless man instead of just giving him money. I let him know that he was just a block from the place he could turn the cans into cash. I am hoping that when he sees how much money he can get for a few cans, he will start collecting cans and recycling all the time.

Re: International Recycling Day & Journal

sandy said Sep 29, 3:18 PM:

What a great idea Mr. -and you may have given him the pride of a
weekly income as well as his contribution to the environment.
Here in my community -we have a local man who was down on his means-
who earns his own living by doing the same thing.
He is not too proud to go through rubbish bins in the street to retrieve
the cans -even though he is ridiculed by some!
Our local Scout Den has a recycling facility and it is something we all
can and should do.
A number of years ago -beer bottles were also paid for when re-cycled-
and all the men used to re-cycle -but then they stopped paying for the
glass and they stopped the effort and returned to putting them in their
home recycle bins.
All glass should be re-cycled and we should go back to more glass -less plastic.

Even many of our Hotels now use plastic on account of rising violence
and the number of people being glassed in drunken fights!
How sad we have come to this!

It is the 1st of the month tomorrow for us and I am making that my day
to do extra recycling -I hope the rest of our members do too -and can
come up with some new and innovative ideas!

Re: International Recycling Day & Journal

Mr. said Oct 3, 11:29 AM:

Good for you Sandy. Hedre, the government charges a per can & per bottle fee on all soda bought. the consumer pays the fee and who ever recycles that gets the fee back. Perhaps the Australian government could do somehting similar for bottles, that way the government holds the money until the bottle is recycled. It is actually a cost nuetral or money maker for the government because the money paid whomever recyles is always much less then the fee charged. In this way it pays for the program and / or the government makes a slight amount of profit.

Yes, we certainly need to “take a page out of your book” over there, Mr.
I am pressed for time at present -but it will be worth at least a lobby letter.
I must also check on the system in other States -because all ours vary!

I would be very interested to hear what policies are applied in other
Countries, also -as it helps when lobbying to be able to make successful
suggestions and comparisons to pass on.

The 1st of the month has just passed and my recycling quest has
been where to recycle my old phone directories.
I have found my answers at Planet Ark and many other tips-

Re:International Recycling day and journal

Mr. said Nov 3, 9:23 PM:

Here in L.A. one can recycle phone books in a special recycle trash can that holds newspapers, boxes, plastic & metal.

Re: International Recycling Day & Journal

Mr. said Nov 3, 9:28 PM:

This November 1, I transferred recycleables from the regular trash cans to the recycle trash can. I have also kept a small cactus garden alive at my school. startegic watering has changed the cactus from withered grey to beautiful blue/green and full. This small garden helps generate oxygen for the planet.

Re: International Recycling Day & Journal

That's what we need in Brisbane then, to re-cycle our phone books Mr.!

Your small garden, helping to generate oxygen for our planet has made me think -and realise -that our water restrictions have helped rob us of oxygen.
So many of us have had to give up our gardens -due ot not be able to keep'them alive -and yet, like trees, but on a smaller scale -we are not contributing
back into the air….
I hadn't realised that before.

I have begun to work on more finite recycling in my home. I have put an additional wastebasket in the bathroom just for recycling. For instance, when you open a new package of toilet paper rolls, you have the old cardboard toll in the middle of the old roll left and the paper or plastic that wraps the new roll, both are recyclable. There is also a project to collect, melt down and recycle old soap its out here somewhere I just don't know where. Anyone else hera of it or know where it is?

Re: International Recycling Day & Journal

sandy said Nov 22, 9:58 PM:

Good idea Mr. -and something we can all easily do too.

I did have a look on the net about recycled soap and it seems there
are places that collect and send it to Africa -but I can't find a local
link for you.
It is an excellent idea-soap is something we all waste!

NORWAY unveiled the world's first osmotic power plant overnight, harnessing the energy-unleashing encounter of freshwater and seawater to make clean electricity.
