I spend a lot of time with the homeless, and I have a tendency to “see” them in my travels. Today, in a store, I spotted a gentleman standing in front of a lottery ticket machine. He spent five minutes trying to straighten out his dollar, and another 5 looking over the selections. My heart ached with the earnestness on his face. I struggled with the urge to go over and advise him, not to save his money, but to spend it more wisely. (Buy a quick pick, I thought, the odds are worse but the payout is bigger.) This dollar should be dear to him, a lifeline to possible future success. For him, it was found money. All he had to do is go through the trash at McDonalds for his next meal. I knew better than to say anything, because it was obvious to me that he wasn't buying a ticket, so much as a dream. He got his ticket and went outside, sat on the curb, and scratched his numbers slowly, one by one, pausing for a moment between each number. He stared off in the distance, I can only imagine what the vision was. In that moment he had all he needed in this world. |

Oh Mudge; that is so wise. To let him be. This is synchronistic as my husband brought up the topic of hope today; and we realized that when someone is really down and out , that's what sees them through. Hope is like a light when you're in darkness. |
