OK! I’m taking a poll! Where did the meaning of “Carnival” come from? The Powers-that-be offer two options.

1. From the Latin - Carrus navalis - “ship cart.”  This would refer to a cart in a religious parade, such as was used in the Festival of Apollo.

2. From the Latin - carne vale - “farewell to meat.” This is reflected in modern Italian - “carne levare” to remove meat. A reference to the fact that meat will be removed for Lent. So we better eat it now. And while we are at it, lets eat everything else! And drink! and …

Cast your vote! I must say that I am very fond of “farewell to meat.” I think it should be a sad, sad love song.
