Aley, I think you may have something there with your dad in the hospital during some of your formative years. The 0-5 time period in a child's life is the most critical. The problem for me is I don't remember much at all from that time.
I believe we all have some addiction or abuse something :) I have a friend who avoids things/fills the void by running daily 12 miles and regularly 26.2 mile marathons. He has a wife and a child. I feel he tolerates them more than appreciates them.
Another cycles through relationships, another through sex, both hoping each will fill the void.
Other friends buy books, music, food, clothes, toys but neglect to pay the household bills.
Me, I made peace with one addiction, working with another one, have a third staring me in the face that I really must deal with sooner than later. Baby steps, baby steps, baby steps…
