Touch can be one of the most powerful healing tools. As a massage therapist, and someone who has experienced both anxiety and depression, I know first hand the amazing results one can achieve through touch. I remember my first Reiki treatment that I received. I thought at best I would feel relaxed for awhile when someone placed their hands on me. Then, all of a sudden, I surrendered to the experience and felt energy circulating in my body as I had never felt before. It was truly amazing. I felt more whole, more connected. Massage too, has brought me back to myself. It allows me to connect with my body, and brings me out of my head, both practicing and receiving. I would reccomend both types of bodywork to anyone experiencing similar concerns.

I've become more and more interested in healing through touch in the past couple of years. I was very adverse to being touched, other than by my own children, for most of my life. Since letting go a bit and opening myself to the good intentions of others, I've come to find touch as one of the deepest expressions of love and compassion.

Two days ago I massaged my son's calves as he could barely walk on them after days of running with his new cross country team. I felt love for him as I gently first relaxed and lightly stretched his muscles, and then gradually worked my way into the muscle. He fell asleep with a smile on his face and slept for hours, only waking up about an hour before his bedtime. I felt so good being able to do that for him.

Two years ago (and maybe this is where my transformation began?) I had someone take and squeeze my hand when I was in a position where I could barely move or see him clearly. I'm surprised I can remember, but I do. Mostly, I remember the feeling it created in me.

This fall I am going to be taking a few community ed classes. Reflexology is one, connective tissue massage another. What has worked for you that I may want to explore? What kinds of touch are most therapeutic? I find great joy now in being able to use touch to express many feelings and intentions - without crossing boundaries and assuming touch is always welcome.
