What opened up your heart today?

Meenakshi said Jul 23, 10:05 PM:

When we are well grounded, and expanded, an open heart lets in and gives out light and helps us all to stay connected without attachment.

What image, thought, event, words, music opened your heart today?
What really expanded your heart?

Well, yesterday I was able to release some negative feeling thereby opening my heart. I don't exactly know how it happened, though. I asked my chiropractor for advice on my negative thoughts. He said, “We get what we expect, not what we want. For a lot of people, those are two different things. We might want the fancy mansion, but we expect to live in a one bedroom shack all our lives because that's where we currently are.”

I retweeted this on Twitter, I started the observer; the watcher to look at my thoughts curiously. Then I felt better. Once I label my thought as if someone else thought it, the problem usually goes away.

Negative thoughts usually shut down my heart so I can't let anything in. Changing my attitute is the first step to opening my heart.

Today, I read that loving, healing hugs are symbolized by the usual X0X0X0 that people sometimes write as hugs and kisses.

X marks the crossed arms and 0 the embrace.

That opened up my heart further as I felt embraced by Amma, the “hugging saint”

Reconciling with my estranged sister. I had let go of painful feelings I had about her before in my own way.  She has not responded in ways that I had hoped but accepted that and it's good enough for me.  I realize that regardless how others respond, genuine reconciliation and healing happens within - with myself.

Such beautiful sharings!
Surprisingly, I felt my heart expand at a difficult situation today, when with one whose heart is closed. I realized that to have a heart-felt interaction with her, I needed to open even more.

And remembered a piece I'd written once, about a lake in which - surprise!- a poisonous snake enters. The lake expands and the poison dissipates.[The Expanding Lake]

I don't know about today, because I haven't felt well.

I have become more and more aware, of when my heart feels constricted.  Recently, while experiencing grief and sadness, I noticed that tightness as I resisted going deeply into it.  So, I consciously chose to really open my heart up, to feel that and my heart relaxed - it really did feel like an open well, available to receive comfort and give comfort at the same time.

So, this is new for me.  I've always thought I understood open heart but it was at the intellectual, perhaps emotional level, but this is understanding it in the physical body too.

My mother-in-law on a call from India, reciting the words of a blessing between brother and sister on this special day of full moon, Rakshabandhan, while my daughter was tying the thread on my son.

Bonds getting deeper,  light shining–and as I lit the lamp on my multi-faith altar, I realized it's the light that worship is all about. Light endures beyond and shines through the names, pictures, idols, qualities, prayers and observances of our life. And ceremonies and all these outer aspects help to connect us to the light that arose

Yesterday I read again, and this comes back to mind:
The phrase comes from the third verse of the Book of Genesis in the King James Bible:
1:1 - In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.1:2 - And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.1:3 - And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.1:4 - And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness.

I worked all last nigth, and just before going to bed with the first rays of light, I felt I had to go out in the garden. I was greeted by 3 of my dogs, the 4th dog was conspicuously missing. Found him in the other end of the garden holding something that had a very long tail in his mouth. I forced him to give it up. It was a little field mouse, limp, my heart sank. It was wet, no heart beat, but I felt, it couldn't have been dead for long. I gave her mouth to mouse, and massaged her heart. After some effort, she started breathing. She made little sounds, but her eyes were unfocused looking into infinity. I held her in my hands, blew warm air on her, and wanted her to live. I enveloped her in a pink and green bubble of love, told her to take from my life energy what she needed to live. She lived for two hours inside my prayers, her ragged breath became even, and then she died peacefully. I was looking on her little body through misty eyes, so beautiful with the big ears, so perfect. I failed, she died. Perhaps, she died enveloped in love instead of fear and horror, perhaps, this was the only solace I could give her?

Give them strength to live each day to your fullest, give them understanding, peace and serenity. Give them compassion to reach out to others who share their dis-ease and pain. And be with the scientist, researchers and medical personnel who study and treat these maladies. In the name of the Healer Christ. Amen.

Yesterday and Friday I performed beautiful, personalized wedding ceremonies that I had written. I received so many compliments: From one groom: “This is beautiful. Thank you.” From his father: “That was so memorable … forever.” From one bride's mother: “That was so beautiful - I have to hug you!” All of these affirmations of my value open the heart of one who felt worthless in many ways for much of her life. It also opens my heart to see the faces of the two lovers as they commit themselves to each other for life. Their faces glow, some cry, Friday's bride was trembling with emotion. This is love at its finest.

After 2 days of clouds and another of rain, today was sunny.  I walked to the grocery store.  (That I can walk that far again is no small miracle, but that is another tale…)  Bright sun, blue, blue sky, and cool air made me smile.

The people at the sore were polite.  They smiled.  I smiled back.

With far bought than I'd expected when I set out, I called a cab to go home.  I got to sit in that wonderful sunshine.  I smiled at the folks that walked by.  They smiled back.

Finally, the driver who picked me up knew me, called me by name and asked after my family.  He spoke with hope.  He helped me carry my groceries.

Hi Nicola, thank you for your kind words. I have just finished reading your loving post and it reminded me of just how many precious beings and loving situations we have in our life as we are often too busy or preoccupied to notice the love that is around us. Today I was out shopping with my aging mother when at one stage I could feel myself re-acting to different words that she was saying when almost instantaneously I felt my heart open and a loving energy wash over us both. I could see from the look on Mum's face that she felt it too. It is a really special feeling and “it” is out there for those who wish to connect with it.

I had another experience while shopping today that opened my heart. It began with a light hearted conversation with a lady at the KMart checkout and we were discussing our mothers when she happened to mention that her mum had just died. My heart opened at the sadness on her face and in her eyes. I held her hand and said how sorry I was and as I walked away, I realised I was truly sorry for her sorrow at losing her mother. My mother is quite old and the reality of how precious she is (even when she annoys me…I can see myself reflecting back!) was really brought home to me today and yes my heart truly opened up…and then filled up with lots of love.

Consider the possibility that there is no subconcious, that it is a fabrication to keep us from being fully awake all the time by creating an artificial barrier in our mind that put part of our full awakeness out of our reach.

My heart was awakened a hundred thousand times today by every moment. It was especially smiley seeing Minnehaha Fall, the child hood playground of my father and a meditation/quieting space for me this summer(even right under it after the police went to bed).
