Question #3: Why am I here?

martha said Oct 21, 2006, 7:56 PM:

“Why am I here?” (vs. “What do I want?”)  I have to admit, I've found “What do you want?” to be a powerful question, and I've asked it fruitfully on occasion.  In tough situations, when I can't think of anything to say that could possibly help, asking “What do you want?” can start someone talking, if only because everyone wants something.  However, in our materialistic society, “What do you want?”  often brings up ambitions for improving a person's material situation.  I learned this a few years earlier when I created a homework assignment asking students to vision 5 or 10 years into the future–what would that person be doing, saying, thinking about, where would he or she be going, and so forth.  Unfortunately, what I received is a couple of hundred descriptions of a “dream house” in the suburbs with whatever automobile was fashionable that year in the driveway, and a backyard pool.

The question “Why am I here?” takes us deeper.  Obviously the Universe needed you to be here, and here you are.  Why is that?  What are you here to do, be, think, imagine, contribute, give, dance, create?

I am here to make a small difference in the lives of my loved ones and in the lives of people who have gone through similar things my famly has. My grandmother passed away as a result of cancer and that dreaded disease has affected two more family members. I have such empathy for people who's lives have been rudely interrupted by cancer that I've made it a goal for myself to become a radiation therapist. I pray that I have the patience to get through the two year wait list to get into the Medical Radiography program and I pray that I attain a degree so that I may apply to the Radiation Therapy program.
I am also here to be a mommy. It is something that I've wanted for years and years but finally through God's blessings my husband and I now have our son.
I am here to contribute positively to those whose lives I touch whether it be by giving a smile, a little bit of encouragement, helpful advice or even if it's just by sitting down and listening. :)

Hi Darnell,

You are definitely contributing a wise and loving presence among us!  My prayers also are that you will find the doors that you need open for you.

Best wishes,
Martha

What a wonderful Women you are!  I relate to many of the things you said.  My mother passed away 6 years ago from Cancer, my husband is a cancer survivor.  We went to a wonderful cancer support group in Las Vegas and quickly made some very strong and loving relationships with others in the group.  And several of them have since passed.  What a loss!  But more than anything I want to make a difference in the world.  My aspirations have been pretty grandious in the past and nothing really happend. You remind me that the small things make a huge difference too!  I feel a connection when I look into your eyes and can see what a loving women you are!  Thank you.

Why am I here?  I am here to be a caregiver in any capacity God wants me in.  School is one of many ways I can make a difference and be that caregiver.  I want to be an organ donor, a voulenteer for Hospice and a good friend!

Why am I here?

I am here to keep the peace!  I am a very calm person, no drama. I am also still here because I keep my family together. My grandmother passed away a few years ago and she told me to keep everyone together, so I am like the peacemaker or the keeper in touch person for my family. I still cry for her daily, boy death is a very hard thing to deal with or get over. I am a very emotional person and the rest of my family is hard core, so I believe I am here to show emotions for my family as well.

I am here to raise my children the right way in a world where the television is mom and dad. I am here to help them find there way so that they can contribute to society in ways that really matter. My purpose is to do what my higher power needs me to do when it is time to do it. I am here to fight the good fight, believe in the unknown, have faith when all seems hopeless. I am here to share my experiences with others. I am here as a testament that there are still people who live by the golden rule. I am a testament to others not to give up. I am a good  example when one is needed! I was sent here to spread love and peace to show my small area of the world that nothing is immposible. I am here to live for my children until they can live for themselves! I am here to plant seeds and blessed to see them grow and prosper into great things!

Another interesting question…   I am not sure why I am here completely.  I believe, that there are many times in life where we feel that we were there at that moment, specifically, for a reason.  Whether that be the only reason, not sure.  I do believe I am here for a specific reason.  I know that I have things to give back to the Universe.  I am not sure if I have given it all yet, but when it's over, I believe I will have.  Sometimes, I think that the reason we are here doesn't seem as important to us as it would to others.  That is unfortunate.  It's as Nelson Mendela said in his 1994 inaugural speech “We are all meant to shine, as children do.  We are born to make the manifest in the glory of God that is within us.  It's not just in some of us, it's in everyone.  And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.  As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”
So, maybe our presence is for another to learn from.  So, I, being the best person I can be, may never be satisfying to me but I may change anothers life by being who I am.  Whether it be for the better of the Universe, one can only hope.
