How can you change the world?

Grey said Oct 3, 2008, 12:45 AM:

Surprised this question hasn't been asked here, yet. (Or maybe it has and I just can't find it.)

Anyway, one answer might be for the Gaia community to participate in Google's Project 10 to the 100th.

There's some conversation starting up about it now around the Gaiasphere, but there's not much time left until the deadline for submissions. So start thinking about it now! :)

Then share your thoughts either here in this thread or on these blogs and discussion threads in other groups:

Sandra's blog
~KES's blog
My blog
Gaia Community Vision
The Integral Pod (a “request-in” group, so you'll need to be a member to participate, but anyone can follow the conversation… once it gets started)

Anyone know of anywhere else around Gaia that talk of the Project is happening?

Let's change the world! :)

One small act of kindness at a time. When you touch the heart or soul of another person, it becomes contagious, and people pay it forward.

We are all a part of this unending living web of life… dancing & singing in any small corner will make beautiful ripples throughout the universe…

With love & hugs to all as we go singing a longgggggggg..

there are only three things that my mom always told me and they come to mind for this post…

1.   Do what needs to be done because it is the right thing to do.
2.   Treat everyone with love, respect, compassion and kindness - they may have trillions of dollars to give you to change the world
3.   Choose to be happy and to belive in the greater goodness of people.

I grew up with this being told over and over and I belive that if you do these things, you are happier, your world is better, and your friends are real.

We can each help change the world, by living that practise every day.
By practising and promoting peace and by acts of kindness and giving.
By being true unto ourselves, by standing united.

You, me, us all, united can make the change and alone
we can all start a little ripple, everyday.
A ripple that will spread across the water, across the sea and
splash on foriegn sands, to spread our love.
The love that can and will save our world and make peace
a reality.
I can do it-and so can you!!!

On one level any act, however small, changes the world.  The fundamental war is the one within ourselves, and if you don't take steps to overcome that, then you can volunteer at soup kitchen for the rest of your life and still be divisive.

That said, I think that we can all see that merely verbally demanding sustainability is not enough.  Things like growing your own food and setting up seed swaps are critical piece in this, because it is tastier, greener, and promotes true community.  Check out the transitional town movement www.transitiontowns.org, a program used all over the world to get local governments to agree to some very specific policy decisions about sustainability, getting them to go beyond lip service.  This is the larger scale, the smaller being ecovillages and co-housing which are like the rediscovery of the village.  There's something so beautiful and practical about people coming together to share resources and skills for the betterment of all.

Also check out the amazing work of Geoff LAwton, a permaculture expert who has worked with greening the desert.  I'll include the link below.

Start small.

Rob Hopkins kicked off the whole transition town movement as a practical exercise on a permaculture design course in Kinsale, Ireland. Look what's happened now! Coincidentally (?), Rob visited our place as a student in the early nineties and carried out a study on whether permaculture design supported the UK's biodiversity targets. His study showed emphatically that it did.

Also coincidentally (?) a friend lent me some DVDs of Geoff Lawton's work. Absolutely brilliant. Simple techniques leading to huge complexity.

If we adopt an integral approach as an ethical basis and general strategy for our work, namely care of our environments, communities and ourselves, we have far less chance of generating harm.

Permaculture design has always been about starting from where we are now. The backdoor is a good place.

Hwyl!
