What would your Ten Commandments be?

Siona said May 7, 10:30 AM:

If you could rewrite the Ten Commandments, either as they were to have been given to people centuries ago, or as they might be amended or re-given today, what would you have them say?

(Or, if you don't want to make everyone follow your rules, what would you say are your personal Ten Commandments?)

Ten? I have one that covers pretty well any eventuality I can think of. It comes in many versions, which may differ in nuance, but not in intent. Here are several:

What you would avoid suffering yourself, seek not to impose on others. (Epictetus)

Avoid doing what you would blame others for doing. (Thales)

That which you want for yourself, seek for mankind. (Muhammad)

Never impose on others what you would not choose for yourself. (Confucius)

That which is hateful to you, do not do to your fellow. That is the whole Torah; the rest is the explanation; go and learn. (Talmud)

Ok if I had written the Ten Commandments this is what I would have put:
Show respect to your neighbor even if no respect is given in return.
Be loyal to your friends and family.
Be truthful in all aspects of life.
Live as if every moment is your last
Know the facts first before you speak.
Be open to all things even if you do not agree with them.
Take only what is offered and give as much in return.
Find your braking point and push beyond it.
Let not the words of others dictate your life.
Hold patients for those who have none, love for those who have been hated, trust to those who never trusted, and hope for those who have given up.

Osho's 10 (I like them):

1.  Never obey anyone's command unless it is coming from within you also.
2.  There is no God other than life itself.
3.  Truth is within you, do not search for it elsewhere.
4.  Love is prayer.
5.  To become a nothingness is the door to truth. Nothingness itself is the means,
     the goal and attainment.
6.  Life is now and here.
7.  Live wakefully.
8.  Do not swim—float.
9.  Die each moment so that you can be new each moment.
10. Do not search. That which is, is. Stop and see.

You're welcome. I first came across them here.

The wiki entry on Osho adds that these commandments were written in 1970 when he was still known as Rajneesh. Someone had asked him the question you (Siona) ask in this thread :) and he replied he really didn't hold with commandments but he'd come up with a list “just for fun.”

In his list, he underlined numbers 3, 7, 9 and 10, which I repeat here:

3.  Truth is within you, do not search for it elsewhere.
7.  Live wakefully.
9.  Die each moment so that you can be new each moment.
10. Do not search. That which is, is. Stop and see.

1.Thou shall have sex every day, either with thyself, or with others, or both, preferably with both.
2. Thou shall love and love and love and love and love and love yourself and others, no matter what
3. Thou shall drop the story and open through any feeling.
4. Thou shall give and receive and be okay with both.
5. Thou shall hug and kiss.
6. Thou shall know thy heart virtue, express it and experience it every day.
7. Thou shall be committed to having a direct experience of Truth and desire it the way someone whose hair is on fire desires water.
8. Thou shall know you are wonderful and so is everyone.
9. Thou shall let the Wisdom within guide you every moment.
10. Thou shall be ok with disobeying the above commandments that is, thou shall feel neither guilt nor shame if thou disobeys the above commandments and if thou does, be ok with that too, and open through that feeling also.
