What are you going to be for Halloween?

Siona said Oct 14, 2008, 10:49 AM:

And what should I be for Halloween? Or, even, what's the best Halloween costume you've ever seen? If you had all the time and resources imaginable, what would you dress up as?

Captain Brille coeur, while a peacesign costume is a noble idea, I feel, as an Irishman, where the whole Halloween thing started, that it would be nice to respect the traditions of the Samhain season (Samhain is the original Gaelic name for this ancient pagan feast) and to keep the ghostie and/or ghouls aspect to your costume. An idea might be the old white sheet/cape ghost outfit and you could paint a peacesign on your whitened face in red or black with stage makeup and also paint or sew one onto the sheet itself at chest level or at the back or both- a sort of a Casper (the peaceful ghost) instead of the friendly Ghost.
Personally I will not be dressing up this year, as I got all halloweened out from working at Disneyland Paris as the MC of the halloween festival for 5 CONSECUTIVE YEARS  where I was either the Unfriendly Undertaker or the Friendly Scarecrow. I like the idea of Siona going as a birthday cake or how about going as the Queen of the Underworld- (an inside joke-that Siona will get) and going overboard on Vampirella style Makeup with Royal class & crown, and a becoming cape and/or wings

I love the idea of the greyhounds as the 3blind mice & you could run in front or behind them as the terrifying “Farmers Wife” wielding A humungous carving knife & threatning to cut off their tails and onlookers could chant “Did you ever see such a sight in your life? As Three Blind Mice” If I saw that, I would swoon to the floor and laugh uncontrolably and give the three blind mice, juicy bones, and slivers of tasty cheese

Entirely off the theme, a few of my computer clients breed and train Greyhounds, they are very intelligent, amazing dogs, excellent family pets too, they don't even need a lot of room, just regular exercise.  Sort of like anorexic Labradors, they are just lovable.

If I had lots of time to play with it, I'd make an even better Poison Ivy costume.

My friend could make a mold of my torso and onto that I'd add detailed vines that look like they're coming right out of it, then we'd do some other mold-magic so the vines come off as one piece I can wear directly on my body and add make-up to make it look like they're really coming out of my skin.  AWESOME.  Botanical-woman, totally.

The mold of my torso would make it a perfect seamless match (in theory at least) so that it looks more realistic than just attaching the vines, plus easier to put on and off as one piece.

I've got a pic on my profile of the original Poison Ivy costume I did, but I think vines growin out of me body would be way cooler.  Just take a lot more time to do.

This year, my kids want to spnd the night with their Aunt on Halloween so I get the night off. I'm just going to relax and enjoy the peace and quite. Nobody comes to my house for trick or treating because I live in the middle of nowhere.  Even my own kids don't trick or treat here, we drive to town where the houses are much closer together when I take them out.

I was always the tallest kid in my class in school when I was younger. I always wished i could be shorter. One year I dressed up as a midget. It was the best costume I ever put together and was a lot of fun. People shorter than I would bend over to talk to me or to shake my hand. It was difficult to walk in and my friends had to help me carry my treat bag, but it was a blast anyway to feel short for one night!

To make the costume, I wore a pair of little kid pants up just past my knees. Then my shirt was tucked into the pants, but the neck of the shirt went up to my waist. Then I had a really big head made out of a pillow case that came down to my waist and was tucked into the neck of the shirt. I had gloves attached to the end of the shirt sleeves for hands. My arms were in the pillow case. The pillow case had a huge face drawn on it with eye holes cut out so I could see where I was going and lots of yarn for hair. People would stop and stare, trying to figure out the illusion of the costume.

I like it, cute and simple. I was looking at a bunch of costumes like that the other day on the family fun website. They have many costumes, all sorted into different categories, and all home made with directions. My favorite was the recycled costume.

Last year my daughter's nursery school teacher came to school on Halloween dressed as a door (a piece of card board that hung around her neck with a door knob (drawn by making a circle with a magic marker). When the kids knocked on the door and said trick or treat, she gave them mozzarella sticks. The kids loved it!

I am a big fan of the book (not to be confused with the musical) Wicked, I'm having trouble deciding between Galinda the “good” witch of Oz, and Elphaba Thropp, the “wicked” witch of the west.  I definitely look more like a Galinda, and I love pink, but as a biology major and someone with an interest in politics and animals welfare, Elphaba would fit my personality better.
I like the musical too, by the way.  It's just different.

Any opinions?

Best costume I ever saw was at a Rennaisance Faire, a centaur.  Very real, right down to a disturbingly accurate retractable phallus.

Emily, I am a big fan of Wicked myself and same with my father. I love Elpheba and think you should be her for halloween, but that's just my opinion. However, Galinda is more of an easier witch to play (because of all the green make-up that is required for Elphaba). Ultimately it's your choice.
I am going to be playing Jesus! and I hope that it does not offend any faithful christians. I have had many comments made that I look like the one that's pictured on Mexican Candles and posters, so it should be fairly easy for me to transform into Jesus. I would be delighted to hear any suggestions as to which Jesus to portray! Thanks

Maybe you might consider going as the less comfortable of the two- it would ensure that the “hidious grin” on your face would be real & you would be even more wicked than mere mortals might suspect. That would be the magic….

You talk of ” a smile” for the witch, well, taint a smile yer after, but an unmistakably, poisonous, hidious grin. I hate to break it to the wonderfull givers of witchy costume advice, but the witches in Wicked don't really cackle, and they aren't really wicked.  Unless you consider being completely ineffective to be wicked.  Mostly the WWotW is just green and pointy.  And pretty angry toward the end.  I should defintely be angry to pull off an Elphaba impression.  And green.
