gay at various non-gay events...

i had an experience over the weekend which i thought i would share. you can look at the 'events' section for my comments on the overall event, but i wanted to share this particular element in a different thread and get others thoughts/perspectives on the subject. curious for example where some of the gay storytellers tell stories. always gay events? should we have people also at non-gay events helping to raise consciousness about us? i certainly appreciated the african american and african focused storytellers and what they have to offer.

i went to the storytelling festival this past weekend. second largest one in the country as i understand it. rich, wonderful experience. surrounded by community. no drinking. no smoking in the park. outdoors in large tents with open sides. live music. folkish, americana, bluesy/jazz/pop, etc… 2 1/2 days of heaven in many ways.

here i was. gay man. out on the one hand. comfortable talking to family about basic stuff, but at the same time, not really a place where i could comfortably lay down with a partner. may not be beat up, but would have mormon vigilantes surely talking to me about how my love was inappropriate for children to see (i am in utah). i don't have a partner anyhow, but had me longing for a nurturing and welcoming environment for gay people that is not rough as are most clubs and gay environments where sex is on everyone's minds to such an extent that not much else is.
