Re-naming this group

As this group is evolving from a Librarians-only private group to a community-wide public group for Gaians interested in Quotes, with a shared vision of making our Quotes section a reliable resource for the www, I wonder if we should rename this group.

The name is misleading as naturally it makes people assume either that it's only for librarians or that all members are librarians on joining.

OM , our cultivator, is off line nowadays but I hope she comes as we consider this- shall we rename this group?And if so, what shall we call it?

(It's a mite bland, sure, but it mirrors the Q&R Group or Gaia Books… it makes it at-a-glance simple. :)

Keep 'em flowing!
While we think: thought I'd bring the purpose of this group here, so we can build a name related to it.

This is a Community Service, special interest group dedicated to making the Gaia Community Quotes database as clean, accurate, and useful as possible.

The name should convey this, I think? A very focused group.

It will be good to get more ideas too.  I am done with this for now & which ever name you come up with, I am in favor of having a way to easily post quotes.  And if one is already there a default comes up… like name taken or quote is here.

Is the purpose to build a data base or repair the one we currently have?

The purpose is a clean statement of the goals.  It appeared this was going to now go out to everyone to join… so I was thinking more like Haiku or the Gratitude Chain groups type of purpose.  Something where everyone that is in the group contributes quotes they love.

That feels like it goes with a purpose more than just the word data base. Sorry Meenakshi.  I can have it either way whether I can think with it or not is my problem.  Sorry I brought it up

Thanks Ingebrita.  I like the ones Meenakshi and Siona came up with too.  I think I was responding to a mass mailing.  We should call the group what Siona wants.

lol!! - at Tsuya's (I'd also reccomend taking off the special interest part - makes it sound like we're lobbying government officials!)

I think it's particularly important that people don't post quotes here, except once in a while- there are many groups where we can do that. But this group I thought is particularly for what the mission statement is - to bring together all Gaians who contribute quotes to the Quotes section and those who edit them; so that over time, the librarians have less to do because Quote adders [sorry- don't mean the snake!!!] are doing things right.

 I have to admit I'm very confused now, at the dilution of purpose, if indeed that's what's  happening.

lol! [thank you Tsuya for always helping me laugh and get grounded at the same time!] confused about my confusion??? Umm…re-reading this thread, I can't see what I was worried about. Perhaps I took Siona's comment to mean that this group is like Gaia Books?

For the record, this is a specially different group than any of the other groups mentioned - on Gaia Books we can discuss about any of the books; and Q & R where we can discuss as well. There is no editing going on there.

In this group, we can't see the comments made to the quotes - those are in the comments themselves, and perhaps one day you can bring those comments together as you do for books, Siona?

In this group, we inform the librarians which quotes need editing; librarians keep a roster of what they're editing and which members they're contacting and bring support issues to the team's attention.

Voila! We have a group that is unique! The name needs to reflect that, the current name is confusing people, and a simple name like Gaia Quotes might further confuse people. Most members do not take the time to read descriptions through, so we've to have a very clear name.

I'm just getting back into activity here in the community and this group. Wow, this is a toughie issue to jump into. Especially as I have at least 6 weeks of unread posts for this group, so I am not up to date on what morphing has prompted this energy toward renaming. 

Re the term “special interest” in the Group description, I forget why that's there. I think it was meant to reflect that we are focused, not broad like Gaia Networking, or the Lounge. But then, probably the name itself conveys our special interest.

If no one objects soon, I will just take those two words out of the description, and perhaps substitute “highly focused” instead. (?)

I need to think about the proposed names. My FIRST IMPRESSION is that Gaia Quotations Group (no The and no quote marks) is fine. Re other alternatives, I favor Gaia Quotations Project over Workshop.

This really is a project, not just a gathering place for people who love quotes. I never really anticipated it would evolve into that gathering place function, but I can see that it's a natural evolution, and to be accepted. Nonetheless, we have a strong “work” focus, cultivating (in the strict sense of the term: feeding, weeding, pruning) the Quotes Section (whether for the Community or the World.) To my mind, that is the PRIMARY purpose of the group, and the name needs to reflect that, somehow. So I favor adding some term like “project” to the name.

I realize that there is confusion about who is a Librarian, etc. and that matter could use some creative pondering.

Do we really need two groups? Librarians with their work-talk and focus, and their own resources and activities, and Quote Lovers who talk ABOUT quotations? 

But, let me ponder the whole thing some more, and get back in a day or so.

Renaming things on Gaia always brings out humor and creativity and more options than could possibly be used in a zillion years. What a cool bunch of folks here!!!

Welcome back!!!  You were missed!!!

I like “highly focused”…  “Special interest” has a political connotation for me - lobbyists, special interest groups.

And Gaia Quotations Project really does describe what is going on here.

I wonder if “librarian” could be added under the member icons of the librarians?  The same way “moderator” is used for the moderators, for those of us who are librarians but not moderators?

Welcome back, OM!!!!!!!!  Woo- hoo!!  We're cooking with gas now - yee-hah!!  VERY excited to have you back.  That said, take your tiiiiimmme easing back into things - the no-stress approach!!  

The big news in the last six weeks is that the guidelines got posted on the Add a Quote page and we've had some dustup over messaging members regarding their propensity to quote themselves.  Also, a few new members, and Nicole added herself as librarian.  Other than that, it's been pretty quiet, as far as I recall.  Still lots of posts, of course!

As far as the renaming thing goes, from what I understand, Meenakshi maybe got some feedback as to confusion over who the librarians were, and whether joining the group makes one a librarian?  I don't think  name change is necessarily necessary (dept of redundancy dept)… I think if we alter the group description a bit, list the librarians by name (Barbara, I'd asked about the listing librarian instead of moderator, etc. under our pix, but don't think it's possible yet), and clarify a bit about wanting quote enthusiasts to join the group and provide feedback and point out edits that need to be made, one of the librarians (x,y, or z – I get to be x!) will gladly make them - something like that - I think that would be sufficient without the name change.  And yay! - ixnay on the especial-ay terestin-shay.  Maybe not “highly focused” either - do we want to highlight our OCD perfectionist tendencies and scare potential peeps away?!

We'll get it sorted eventually - I don't think there's any rush.  I think a lot of this goes back to me keelhauling you and Meenakshi around to the idea of having a public group, something I've felt passionately about since the original “wision” (no brute squads!) - and though it would be nice to have a mixed group - with some public and private boards, that doesn't seem technologically possible (yet… I'm always thinking outside that durned box!) - so… it might be good to split the groups (eek! not my preference), or consolidate some of the current boards to make a more flat, inclusive structure.  As I think you know by now, I favor it being as open to all as possible, so that folks can find their own niche.  But I look forward to hearing the fruits of your pondering - so great to have your thoughtfulness back on board!!

Again, I don't think there needs to be a rush to rename, but I defer to Meenakshi on this, as she's the driving force behind this idea.  I'm good with it as is, with Gaia Quotes Group (good gracious, no quote marks though - we're trying to get users away from their extraneous use!) - prefer not Quotations in full, so we're congruent with the actual Quotes section - and good with Quotes Project - I actually think the project aspect (of gaia quotes in general and of this group) is one of the most interesting things going.  All goes back to David's tiny little huge bomb of an idea - “what about a wiki?”  Can we actually make the quotes section more vibrant and useful through democratic collection of passionate peers working (LOVE your gardening metaphor, OM, esp, the pruning!!) together?  LET'S FIND OUT!!!

Oh, and regarding renaming in general, I keep having this Wayne Dyer quote running through my head… “It doesn't matter what you call it.  You can call it God, you can call it Spirit… you can call it George” – mangled a bit I think, and it may not be George, but it's some guy's name, and it keeps running through my head when I think about “what you call it.”

Yes, SOB, the idea of an Information Desk is very much with us, and we made a Room  here called that. I spent a lot of time researching Info Desk images to find the icon for that Room !!!!!

I'm not sure the concept is broad enough to cover the entire group activity. Can you say more about how you see it all being an Information Desk??

Tsuya, as usual everything you said is eminently sensible from my point of view. Thanks to all here who have shared their thoughts and preferences. It's clarifying to even think together about the whole subject. I think we'll emerge stronger and clearer.

I don't yet know my views! Right now I lean toward renaming, and calling it Gaia Quotes Project. But that's not the “popular vote” favorite (with 2 votes) that ~KES has tabulated. Project is a word that can encompass the Quote Lovers and the Gaia Quotes Section Librarians, I think. Splitting into two groups is quite premature I feel, but an option if it evolves.

But I need to do some back-reading, and get a better feel for where we are.

What do others think of my leanings?

I'd say for now, let's move on and then revisit this issue when I have caught up, and others have had more time to come up with insights and ideas.

How's that?
