Guidelines for Adding Quotes

1Vector3 said Feb 28, 9:46 PM:

GUIDELINES FOR ADDING QUOTES

1. Please pretty please, search for your quote before adding it. Chances are, we already have it. Just enter a key phrase from your quote in the Search field you are given on the Add a Quote phase, and then take a breath as the system searches. No need to click anything after you finish typing.

2. Please be as accurate as you can in entering a quote. If you are going from memory, you will probably end up entering a duplicate in our system. Not to mention confusing people who want to use your quotation accurately.

3. Please be aware that there are polite limits on quote lengths. Be reasonable.

4. The following are considered spam and will be deleted forwith:

Entire chapters from your unpublished book
Advertisements
Impolite language, unless from a documented famous author and the Source is given
Nonesense, unless from a documented famous author and the Source is given

For Gaia's library to maintain value, it can't become a repository of member thoughts and aphorisms. If there weren't a place on the site to do this, I'd feel otherwise, but there's no reason why members can't use their blogs to store their own personal wise sayings, or, for that matter, to create a Group that others can contribute to.

My preference would, again, be to limit self-quoting to one or so a day / week–that would keep our database from getting flooded–and for members eager to get their aphorisms or wise words out to either blog them or create an aphorisms / quotation Group. And then either the “best of” the Group could be picked from and added to the database, or other members might pick and choose their own favorites from among those to add to the library. Of course this would require a little extra work, but work and value usually go hand-in-hand. :)

Revised guidelines for Gaia quotes
1. Don't add duplicate quotes!
If the quote is already in the system, please do not add it again. The search box is there for this reason. :)

2. Post only one quote per entry. In other words, don’t post a whole bunch of quotes together in one unending thread.

3. Please limit quotes that are unattributed, or your own work. Quotes with unknown authors currently outnumber all other authors here on Gaia. Please only post quotes you know the author of - and preferably can cite source as well! This will assure all users who view Gaia quotes that they can cite quotes they find here with confidence.

Please also limit posting of quotes that are your own work. We encourage you to post your own words of wisdom on your blog or in discussion groups, reserving the quotes section for published works (this way, should you choose to publish your own work in future, there will not be confusion as to whether the material was already published on the web).

Please do not post advertisements as quotes - they will be removed.

4. Don't include quotation marks, and please limit other formatting. It's not necessary to put quote marks around the quotations on Gaia; we'll take care of that for you. :) Also, please do not post quotes in ALL CAPS, or italics, bold, color, etc. Use the the formatting tools only for where emphasis is used in the quote itself. :)

5. Finally, please tag your quotes! Please tag your quotes appropriately with words or phrases that will help other users find the quote when they are searching based on subject/topic. The better you can tag and attribute a quote (including source!), the more valuable the quote may be to other users. Use the comment function to add any additional information that might be of interest - what the quote means to you, where you first read it.
