Raw and traveling

michael [no longer around] said Apr 15, 2007, 3:22 PM:

I am traveling a lot and have great difficulty in finding the good foods as I travel around. Sometimes I can't find but processed food and my taste buds have me fall back into the wrong food habits. Also when I have business lunches it is difficult to always be the exception of the business-social event.
Anyone has experience with this?

Thanks for sharing and blessings,

Michael.

Hi Michael,

Yes, I tend to run into the same problem myself!!

What works for me is to always plan ahead and always travel with extra nuts, seeds, goji berries, cacao beans, green powders, etc.

There is a great chapter entitled Traveling in the Raw in Gabriel Cousens book Conscious Eating that covers this theme.

Traveling is always such a challenge.

If I am going to be away for an extended time, I will take a blender with me. I've made green smoothies in hotel rooms and been sooooo glad to have it.

I also bring a supply of any of the following: raw org. almonds, jar of raw almond butter, jar of raw tahini, hemp seeds, larabars, dehydrated apples, green powder, dulce sea weeds, raw nori sheets.

Carrots dipped in either tahini or almond butter will go along way. Same with bananas and almond butter on active hiking days.

Something else I've come to travel with, though this might be an issue with purists, are vegan veggy broth cubes and powdered vegan veggy soups. I find that sometimes I really crave something warm and do not feel like tea, rather I want something savory and warming.

Love,
Christine

Great ideas in your post, Christine. I tend to travel quite a bit as well, and one of the things I frequently take with me is hemp protein powder mix (which is actually a complete food, with juice or almond milk added). It travels well and keeps me close to raw…

Kindly,
Simon

I've also looked into how to make traveling (mostly) raw possible. I'm lucky in the sense that I don't have a completely raw diet, and while healthy eating options are becoming more available…traveling healthy still requires a good plan.

I realized I couldn't travel on cacao, goji, fruit, nuts, and seeds alone. For one, if I can't eat too many nuts/seeds before I get nausea. Two, fruit (dried/fresh) doesn't really cut it either.

There is a book out called: The Thrive Diet …don't be scared b/c of the word diet ;) it really isn't or doesn't have to be. He has lots of great raw or mostly raw options for travel.
You can make your own nutrition bars that actually have superfoods and will give you energy you need. This is great for while you're on the go or on a plane.

Another thing…if you are out at restaurants you have options. IF YOU'RE NOT TOTALLY RAW…Ask if they have sides of brown rice, avocado and such. You can fill up on a bowl of brown rice, avocado, tomato, and squeeze some lemon on top. Then order a salad.  If you are totally raw make a salad that would fill you up, like: mixed greens, avocado, tomato, add nuts/seeds they have available, get some lemon wedges. Also, you can bring packets of travel sized brewers yeast and add that to the top of your salad and…BOOM you've got a great meal :) Have some fruit for dessert and everyone will wonder how the hell you've got so much more energy than them at the end of a meal ;)

hope this helps :) I've got tons more …being a health coach and all ;)

My first time on this website and so many people do what I do.  Wow!  I travel with the same foods- nuts, seeds, nut butters, dried fruit, green powders, dulse, acv, superfoods… Traveling in a band in a van or on a bus is a challenge, and as far as social gatherings would go when I was on the road, I would just skip the meal if I didn't like any of the food.
