I run to push myself. I run to be better than I was a week ago, six months ago, or a year ago. I run for the runner's high I feel when I am done. I run to feel good about my body.

Grizzlies qualify 27 individuals, 2 relay squads for National Championships
ASC to be represented in 28 different events
5/13/2008

WALNUT, Calif.- Twenty-seven individuals and two relay teams have been selected to represent Adams State College at next week's NCAA Division II National Outdoor Track and Field Championships that will be held here at Mt. San Antonio College's Hilmer Lodge Stadium, starting Thursday, May 22.

The Grizzlies, who have already ventured into the stadium for the Mt. SAC Relays last month will have an army of 15 men and 12 individual women plus 4X100-meter and 4X400-meter relay teams competing in the 3-day meet and will have athletes competing in 28 different events.

ASC's women, led by top-seeded 3,000-meter runner Tanya Gaurmer (Westminster, Colo.), top-seeded discus thrower Michelle Nelson (Albuquerque, N.M.) and the 4X100-meter relay team of Drew Houston (Colorado Springs, Colo.), Sherline Duncan (Tweedside, Jamaica), Carla Kay Mills (May Pen, Clarendon, Jamaica) and Indira Spence (Trelawny, Jamaica) will be gunning for a title that would allow the Grizzlies to complete the 2008 sweep after ASC won the indoor crown, the Grizzlies' first-ever national track and field title at the Division II level.

The Grizzly men, who finished third at that National Indoor Track & Field Championships in Mankato, Minn. in March, will be paced by national champions Nick Lara (Alamosa, Colo.) and Aaron Braun (Fort Collins, Colo.), just two of nine different athletes ranked amongst the top three seeds in their respective events.

A total of 620 qualifying athletes were selected to compete by the NCAA Division II Men's & Women's Track & Field Committee and were announced on Tuesday. Student-athletes qualified for the championships, which will be hosted by Cal Poly Pomona, by reaching the automatic or provisional qualifying standards established for each event.

Although the Grizzly women's national qualifying contingent will be slightly smaller than that of their male counterparts, the Grizzlies will be quite busy as nine of the 12 have qualified in multiple individual events while they and two of the others could run relay legs.

Duncan, Mills and Spence, ASC's three Jamaican-born sprinters, certainly help highlight the list as Duncan will come in seeded fourth in the 100 meters and 15th in the 200 with season-best times of 11.58 and 24.39 seconds, respectively. Mills is tied for seventh best amongst the 100-meter qualifiers at 11.74 seconds and will be join Spence in the 100-meter hurdles as the seventh seed with a season-best time of 14.02.

Spence is the third seed in the hurdles at 13.70 and is seeded seventh in the 200 meters at 24.13. All are members of ASC's national performance list leading 4X100-meter relay team that has a time of 45.13 seconds while Duncan and Spence teamed with Houston and redshirt freshman Michele Williams (Colorado Springs, Colo.) on the 4X400-meter relay team that is seeded 11th with a season-best and altitude-adjusted time of 3:49.39, ran just two days ago at the Mountaineer Last Chance Meet in Gunnison.

Although the aforementioned team members were used to get the relay teams into the meet, ASC Director Track and Field Damon Martin and Associate Head Coach John Wallin do have the flexibility of running any of their athletes selected for the meet, plus any declared alternates- namely freshman Jazmine Ralph (Albuquerque, N.M.) in either or both rounds of the championship events.

Williams will also be entered in an individual event as she comes into the meet seeded 13th in the 400 meters at 55.51 while sophomore Sofia Monroe (Pueblo West, Colo.) and junior Laura Knapp (Alamosa, Colo.) will both contest the 800 meters as the fourth and 11th seeds thanks to their respective qualifying times of 2:09.99 and 2:11.85, respectively.

Monroe will also double in the 1,500 meters and comes in as the 11th seed with a time of 4:36.00.

Gaurmer is another of the other Grizzly "doublers" and is seeded first in the 3,000 meters with a time of 9:42.59 and second in the 5,000 at 16:48.90. Gaurmer had also automatically qualified for the championships in the 1,500 meters but was not declared by Martin for that event.

Gaurmer will have the company of junior teammates Lavenna Mullenbach (Georgetown, Texas) and Heather Wood (Los Alamos, N.M.) in the 5,000 as those two come in with nearly identical times of 17:04.64 and 17:06.55, good for the seventh and ninth seeds, respectively. Wood is also seeded second in the 10,000 meters at 35:12.79 while Mullenbach will come into that grueling race as the 11th seed at 36:18.79.

Sophomore Janette Cary (McCarroll) (La Jara, Colo.) will come in to her first career national track and field championships as the 10th seed in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:56.41.

While covering every women's track event, the Grizzlies will also have some strength in the field events as sophomore Amanda Gylling (La Jara, Colo.) is the second seed in the long jump at 6.07 meters (19'11") and fourth in the heptathlon with 4,827 points while Nelson holds a big lead on the national performance list in the discus with her qualifying mark of 55.09 meters (180'9"), a throw more than six meters better than any of the other qualifiers.

The Grizzly men will be a little more specialized as only six of the 15 will contest multiple events.

However, the Grizzlies appear to be just as strong overall as Braun, the defending national champion and top-ranked 1,500 meter runner headlines the balanced and deep group of qualifiers. Braun, who has a season-best time of 3:42.15, and redshirt freshman Ryan McNiff (Los Alamos, Colo.), heading to his first career national track and field meet, are the top two seeds.

Braun will also contest the 5,000 meters as the third seed at 13:59.21 while teammates Brian Medigovich (San Luis Obispo, Calif.) and Reuben Chebon-Mwei (Kapsabet, Kenya) will give him plenty of support. Medigovich, a junior, is the sixth seed in the 5,000 at 14:06.98 and will also contest the 10,000 meters as the third seed at 29:05.55.

Chebon-Mwei is the ninth seed in the 5,000 at 14:09.49 and comes into the 3,000-meter steeplechase ranked second at 9:00.98.

Junior Babey Wagnew (San Diego, Calif.) has also been selected in the 10,000 and is seeded 15th at 30:18.18.

In the 800 meters, the Grizzlies are quite deep as Lara, a 7-time NCAA Division II National Champion and the winner of six individual titles in the indoor and outdoor 800-meter runs will look to avenge a second place finish at last year's outdoor championships.

He is seeded at 1:49.22, just a flash ahead of true freshman Corey De La Cruz (Alamogordo, N.M.), the third seed who won the RMAC Championships and RMAC Freshman of the Year honors with an altitude-adjusted time of 1:49.25. Sophomore Adam Glenn (Littleton, Colo.) has also been selected for the second straight outdoor year and is seeded 11th at 1:51.60.

Junior Josh Streeter (Alamosa, Colo.) will contest the 400-meter hurdles for the second straight year and is seeded 14th at 52.73. He could have also qualified in the 400 meters but was not declared from that event to concentrate on the hurdles.

The Grizzlies also have a talented sprinter in senior Corey Lenaris (Los Angeles, Calif.), who will have the opportunity to run close to home in both the 100 and 200 meters. He is tied for 11th in the 100 with a season-best time of 10.37 seconds and is tied for 14th in the 200 at 21.23.

The Grizzlies also have five men in the field events as junior Josh Gibson (Riverside, Calif.), another man who will be returning home, qualified in both the long and high jumps. He is seeded second in the long jump (7.70 meters, 25'3 π"), an event he finished seventh last year, and tied for 13th in the high jump at 2.07 meters (6'9 ∏").

Sophomore James Douglas (Parker, Colo.) is seeded fourth in the long jump at 7.54 meters (24'9") and will be looking to improve upon his seventh place finish at the indoor championships.

The Grizzlies also have two qualifying throwers in junior Matt Gersick (Pueblo West, Colo.) and senior John Ybarra (Holland, Mich.). Gersick is seeded third in the shot put at 18.08 meters (59'4") and 16th in the discus throw at 51.28 meters (168'3") while Ybarra is just behind Gersick in the shot put at 17.71 meters (58'1 π").

Junior Wayne Durham (Sierra Vista, Ariz.) is seeded third in the decathlon, an event he finished ninth in a year ago, with 7,058 points.

Visit ascgrizzlies.com <http://ascgrizzlies.com/> for the latest news and info on Grizzlies Athletics.
