Volume 6, 2009

Jess K said Jun 1, 8:29 AM:

Please feel free to discuss the films from Volume 6 here. The films included in this volume are:

New Boobs
Era
The Wednesdays
Canvas (US only*)
Kashf: The Lifting of the Veil (Outside US)

Some of the reflection questions from these films include:

New Boobs
1) Do I tend to devalue an aspect of myself when I feel attracted to someone new?
2) What can I do to help me overcome these moments of insecurity?

Era
1) Do I ever feel that I am living in a different dimension than the people around me?
2) Is it possible that we interact with different dimensions?

The Wednesdays
1) How can I bring more playfulness into my life without using external means?
2) What new freedoms might I discover?

Canvas
1) How has mental illness affected my life personally?
2) Was I able to have compassion for Mary or was that difficult for me?
3) Which of the film’s characters did I identify with most and why?
4) As a parent and a husband, what challenges did John overcome in the course of this film?
5) What creates a sense of peace at the end of the film?

Kashf: The Lifting of the Veil
1) Have I ever felt a strong calling towards a certain kind of learning?
2) How does the title of the film describe the story?
3) Is this a different Pakistan than one I had previously imagined?
4) Can I identify themes of harmony and balance within the film?

What a beautiful film! Check out the website for Kashf and the beautiful soundtrack that goes along with it. Even if you did not receive Kashf: The Lifting of the Veil on your SCC Volume 6, you can still enjoy the poetic versus and Indian vibrations here.

We watched these Saturday.  Did them all.  Usually, not all but the draw was there to keep going.  So, we did.  The emotions were from happy to sad.  And, we especially enjoyed the interview with Mark.  Yep, he shared a lot of good feeling and emotions.
Life is good on Mother Earth….

Peace with Love,
Michael  ;o)

Thanks for sharing Michael! Do you and Judy go through the reflection questions? An interesting topic for me was from the film Era, do I ever feel that I am living in a different dimension than the people around me? Is it possible that we interact with different dimensions?

Hi Michael. I haven't watched the interview with Mark yet, but I'm hoping to get to it this week. (I do love his self-appointed title: Ambassador of Possibility… it makes me think a bit about what sort of Ambassador I'd be. :)

Which was your favorite of the films in this volume? I've only watched the first three so far; for some reason I find movies about mental illness difficult to see, and so I've been avoiding the feature. Perhaps this coming weekend.

I don't care for infirmary films but would be interested in the review too.

I came home on Wednesday Eve from my incredible adventure with the Gaiam Community and Spiritual Cinema Circle and Vol 6 (June) was waiting for me.  Joseph and I committed Thursday to the Circle and the films were all wonderful.  Canvas was so very life giving and hopeful.

I agree, Dee. Canvas, although addressing a very serious topic, touches on important values in an uplifting way, bringing together the support of family. Meanwhile questioning love til death do us part…

Ai. See, Canvas is the one I'd been avoiding–this weekend passed and I've yet to screen it. So thank you, Dee, for the reassurance of the hopeful message in it; perhaps I'll screw up my courage and get to after all.

I'm in my 4th year of membership with SCC.  I've only attempted to share one other time, but I am inspired to share after seeing Canvas.   In my life, I have recovered from a Mental Illness through mostly my own efforts to apply alternative medicine to my own life.    I have practiced raja yoga for 35 years.  That experience combined with all of the healing modalities I have learned and applied have freed me from the anguish that mental illness can cause.  It  took many years, but I did it.  I didn't find this movie too true to the reality I see all around me and to what I have experienced in my life.    I now work to improve the lives of people with mental illness.   I describe what I've ventured upon below…I had my personal hell, but I was given the good fortune to find my way out so that I can help those who are still inside it.

Canvas was only a little snapshot into the drama which these souls go through. It is much worse than that.  Some are lucky enough to have family support, but more often their illness is too difficult to tolerate for family members and so they turn to the system for support.  There are a relative few who do find genuine help.  But, the system is a quagmier of complexity which turns in on itself and often the clients end up over medicated and they, nor their families often don't find help at all.   I hate to say it, but sometimes matters just get worse after intervention.  Drugs are way over emphasized and spirit is just beginning to find mention.

A few years ago I discovered that there is a huge Recovery Movement happening within Mental Health which is charged by the Mental Health Clients, themselves.  By the time I found it, I had developed a large body of knowledge to share about health, both mental and physical and effective ways and means for mental health clients, as well as those that serve them, to apply for healing.  I set out to share that and have developed a non-profit called, Average Miracles.  For a couple of years I want to a lot of Mental Health Conferences.  Over time I have created trainings which I present to clinicians, family members and those clients who help other clients, at Mental Health Agencies both for Government and in the private sector across the country, on using Laughter Yoga to create mental wellness and also workshops on techniques for authenitic healing of trauma.

My overarching goal is to transform the attitudes and enliven the spirit of people who work in the Mental Health System with Laughter, so that Mental Health Clients will ultimately receive more conscious care.   It is hopeful though.  I just attended an event in North California called the Mental Health & Spirituality Conference.  It was a great inspiration and a beacon of hope.

I keep in touch locally with the mental health clients by leading a small discussion group after viewing an SCC movie weekly at the Adult Wellness & Recovery Center.  We call it Reel Insights.  The films are generally inspirational and motivational and the clients appreicate that and look forward to it.

Just thought a few of you might be interested in a perspective from the inside.

Oh, Grace. Goodness. What a story; thank you so, so much for sharing your experiences, and for being such an inspiration. I'm touched, and so grateful that you've not only survived, but work to ease the lives of others.

And do you know what's funny? I'd never heard of Laughter Yoga until Gaia, when I started stumbling across other members who'd listed the practice in their profiles or blogged about in their journals. How did you find LY? And if someone wanted to learn more, what would you recommend?

(Also, is your name really Grace? If so, it's perfect. :)

I just finished watching the three shorts (saving the main feature for another night!) I had skipped this volume and jumped to vol 7, so I'm a little behind the times.

I enjoyed all the shorts, to different degrees.

New Boobs was a pleasant film, nicely filmed and quite funny. “Coincidentally” (yeah, right!), I was watching a retrospective of '80s TV shows tonight and they showed a clip from an old series called “Gimme a Break” with Nell Carter. From the clip, it was clear that the message of the show was that the young girl didn't have to glam up to be accepted. She even took falsies out of her dress!  It's odd that we're still trying to get that same message across, even after all these years.

The Wednesdays was a real thought provoker and my partner and I spent some time talking about it afterwards. We're both about 60 so the “old people” angle was of particular interest to us. While we debated the merits of the “morale” of the story, we both agreed wholeheartedly that it was a very well made film, with evocative shots and excellent acting. I had thought (as did the woman on the panel) that it would end up with the cops discovering the drugs were only sugar pills or something and the couple would realize it was only in their mind. But the actual ending was, in some ways, even better!

One issue that wasn't brought up in the discussion afterwards was the absurdity of making certain drugs illegal. Our system will drug elderly people with all kinds of prescription medications, but deny them the right to take recreational drugs. Oh well, that's a real complex issue that I don't really want to get into right now, but ….

Era was my least favorite of the three, although I think the filmmaker should get credit for the attempt to be quite creative visually. The idea of the silent movie people “evolving” was intriguing, although personally I thought the execution of the concept needed a bit of work. I'm sure the filmmaker's later films will improve with time and experience. I was a little disappointed, though, in what one interpretation of the “message” of the film.  In the “dream” sequence, Jane professes her love for the guy (oops! can't recall his name). But when she evolves beyond him, it's “so long, buddy … it's been nice.”  Oh, that's probably NOT what the filmmaker meant to say, but that's kind of what popped into my head at that point.

I can't wait to watch the “main feature” !!

As a US subscriber, my disk didn't include Kashf. I've searched Amazon and other online video outlets but can't find it. Does anyone know how I can purchase it or download it? I watched the trailer and it look incredible!

Hi FollowingIntuition,
I am sorry your searches for this film have not been fulfilled. It is difficult when  the licensing of our films are restricted to US only or International. We strive to find films that are world volumes, but it doesn't always happen. My best suggestion would be to email our customer service at info@spiritualcinemacircle.com
