Members in Scotland

Anyone out there living in Scotland?
I know its cold and it rains a lot so ideal for a group based on their PCs and laptops (not to mention the dreaded midges).
You don't have to be a Scot to join this group….

Greetings Members in Scotland

Greetings Members in Scotland.

Firstly a big thank you to Kevin for creating this space.

I hope to see many Scottish users (and of course those interested in our wee isle) coming together in this group for laughs and friendship.

My name is Dave and I am pleased to be here.

I live just outside Edinburgh.

Hi good idea we Scots should stick together and rule the world. We already got them all singing a unified international anthem “Auld lang Zing”
:D

Haha.

Where be the craic?

I've got eight cans of lager and a badly strung guitar here.  I'll do y'all some Andy Stewart if you wanna pop over…

Hi, I spent a lovely day in Edinburgh today. IT's “doors open” weekend, so places you would normally pay for are free, and places you wouldn't normally get to see are open.
I'll write more about this on another thread, but I'd recommend Parliament House (home of the judiciary), where we saw a re-enactment of the Deacon Brodie trial, and the Informatics Department at the university. Not just for the tour, but for the stunning architecture, setting and views over Arthur's seat.

Thw whole event continues tomorrow, its all over the city centre, so check the programme and take advantage if you can.

Good to have you with us
Liz

Glasgow had one last week. I imagine there are a number of cities who do this.

I am Robert Allen Mills, Descendant of Captain Kidd on My Mother's Side of the Familiy. She was Cecelia Sarah Kidd, daughter of George Washington Kidd, My Grandfather.

Capt Kidd was William Robert Kidd, Born in Dundee, Scotland, and made the fatal mistake of serving the Crown as a Privateer Hunting Pirates Named in His commission.

Capt Kidd was no pirate.

Capt Culliford, who stole Capt Kidds first ship was a very effective Pirate, and went on a raid to Pirate East India Ships while Kidd was on his way to catch him.

By the time that Kidd got to India, Culliford was gone, and India, and England were paranoid, and blamed Kidd, since they knew nothing about Culliford.

Culliford laid low in Madagascar after his raids.

The Crown decided that the raids against India had to stop or England would lose trade with india.

So the crown, believing the rumors, put a price on Kidds head, and offered amnesty to all pirates who would swear off pirating forever.

this amnesty document was delivered to madagascar to Culliford, and He gladly accepted it, running off with His ships and His booty.

Kidd, ever the naive underling to the crown, turned himself in, and was hung twice, for god saved him the first hanging, and put in a iron cage for all to see for many a year.

This is a true story about my ancestor. He was a good captain, and a lousy piratehunter, and was no pirate, by reason of his conduct.

Hello All,
I am Barbara Klein Mills, wife of Torchholder and newly joined to this group.  I understand that I am of scottish heritage myself being the granddaughter of McLane's on my mother's side though I haven't been able to trace too far back on the family genealogy of the McLane's yet…however my mother always said she was of both scottish and dutch descent.
I've always wanted to travel to Scottland, and this group is providing a very interesting way of learning about the country, its culture and people and I thank you for providing this special source of information and friendship!
I look forward to knowing all of you!
Barb

Great to have you on board, Robert and Barb, and I promise we won't make you walk the plank… now I do know someone who is a descendant of Alexander Selkirk and was the inspiration for Robinson Crusoe… if only I had a parrot…
