Sex in R/evolution!

Working through (and ideally, overcoming) our socially-engrained, ownership-based relationship with relationships, and our love-hate relationship with sex, our bodies, and our desires, is fertile ground for social (r)evolution. On this front of the (r)evolution, we are talking about * monogamy/non-monogamy * polyamory * polyfidelity * new familial structures * jealousy: nature, nurture, or both? * love unlimited – and...(more)

The Dance of Intimacy

(with Two Left Feet)

Clifton Isaacs

You don't love me enough.
You love me too much.
You don't love me in the right way.
You don't love me at the right times.
You try to love me when I can't accept it.
You never try to love me when I can accept it.
Your love is too smothering.
Your love is too distant.
You don't love me like you used to.
You don't love me as much as you could.
You don't love like you should love me.
You don't love me like I deserve.
You don't give me the love I need.
You withhold the love I've always wanted.
You don't love me like other people do.
Your love is embarrassing.
You don't show your love enough.
You don't love me like Mommy and Daddy did.
You don't love me like my ex did.
You don't love me enough to give me what I need.
You don't love me the way I love you.
You just don't understand.

What does this dance become when you replace the “you”s with “I” and the “me”s with “you”?

What does this dance become when you replace only the ”you”s with ”I” and look at the commonality of the issue?

I would venture to say either of the aforementioned replacements would lead to greater self awareness and you can only become as intimate with another as you are aware of yourself.

So, Cifton, what do those replacements give you?

Blessed Be,

I know its an old post, but I just ran across it. Liked it a good deal. (Lets just say it resonated with my experience to date…)  Please, let me return your wordsmithing with my own.

Don't try to seduce me with your caresses now,
                                  or
a silent tear sliding down your perfect cheek.

Never ask me whom I loved before you,
                                  or
Re-read my old love letters to you.

I have had a melancholy dream,
                                 or
A moment of eternal silence.

We have much to say, each to the other.
                                 or
Memories of things that never happened.

To be honest, I don't give a damn either way, anymore.
                                or
I burn for you.

Simon

The dance as Clifton describes it has so many behaviors in it that it seems it can only be interpreted through the being of the “experiencer” (Okay, so I take license with the language).  If we believe that our behavior is functional–that is “no one does nothing for nothin”–then we have to look at the function of our behavior, the function of the behavior of the other, and the function of the behavior of the relationship.  Suddenly, we have six left feet…not to mention the left feet from our past we bring with us.  Lack of awareness leads to narcissism which leads to shallowness which leads to lack of connection which leads to the absence of love which equals apathy.  I've danced that dance of intimacy with two (or more) left feet many times.  Thanks for the spark of consciousness, Clifton.

Harville Hendrix and his Imago concept (found in his book “Getting The Love You Want”) goes a long way to explaining the conflicts experienced in a “love” relationship.

Stuart, I don't think it makes any difference if the you's are replaced with I's - the poem was trying to make a point - I don't see it as a whining poem - but something that shows to us all the ways we try to block love in our lives - we can all see ourselves in at least one of these lines - I see the poem as a call for greater acceptance.
