Our Western, American culture tells us that being strong, self sufficient and independent is the ideal and that depending on another individual is not healthy.
However, human history does not support this paradigm, we are social animals who couple and live in tribes, community and family systems.
Longer life spans and changing culture has created...(more) a growing single population (single, as in: unattached, without a partner or significant other)
I am 45 and grew up in a family of 10 people, lived as a young woman with roommates then married. Last year I separated from my husband and moved out….to live alone. Alone for the first time in my life.
Being single is scary but also exciting. There is a sense of freedom but also loneliness.
As I have entered the dating world I have not really connected romantically with anyone but have found a kind of kinship among others going through similar adjustments while discovering the joys and sorrows of living alone.
