Eligibility

Applicants must currently hold positions as leaders (CEOs, executive directors, founders, or equivalent) of a business or nonprofit based in the United States or Canada (excluding Quebec)
The new idea being entered into the contest should have been implemented (or started being implemented) less than five years ago
The idea must have the potential for creating a positive social impact on the business sector.

Please review the information below to learn how the Echoing Green Fellowship provides up to $90,000 in funding for new, innovative organizations working to create social change.

In addition, even if you're not interested in this fellowship yourself, I ask that you please forward this message to friends or listservs that would find it useful. Unlike other fellowships, you don't need to be nominated to apply - but the only way we can truly make it open to all is through your support.

From microcredit to microcapitalism

An interview with Nobel Peace Prize winner, Muhammad Yunus.

(Fortune Magazine) -- Forget billion-dollar development projects. When Bangladeshi economist Muhammad Yunus surveyed a poor village in the mid-1970s and found that all the money borrowed totaled just $27, he set out to create a new kind of bank - one that would give small loans to the poorest persons, particularly women, without collateral. With just a few dollars, the poor would become entrepreneurs and pull themselves out of poverty, taking Bangladesh along with them.

Today the grandfather of microcredit presides over an improbably profitable banking enterprise that is far along in meeting those lofty goals. Fortune caught up with Yunus on his way to the Clinton Global Initiative, where he would talk about his Grameen Bank's $5.7 billion in loans, $31,000 in education scholarships and how his newest venture, Grameen Danone Foods, would help lift Bangladesh from poverty by 2015.

Congratulations to Muhammad Yunus and Grameen Bank for being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize 2006 "for their efforts to create economic and social development from below."

The Nobel Peace Prize for 2006

The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided to award the Nobel Peace Prize for 2006, divided into two equal parts, to Muhammad Yunus and Grameen Bank for their efforts to create economic and social development from below. Lasting peace can not be achieved unless large population groups find ways in which to break out of poverty. Micro-credit is one such means. Development from below also serves to advance democracy and human rights.
